Research internship: rejected automatically, then team called saying they liked me but can’t offer yet

I interviewed for two similar research internship positions at a large company, with one technical interview covering both roles.
Afterwards, I received automatic rejection emails for both positions. The day after the second rejection, the research team scheduled a short “status update” call with me.
During the call, they repeatedly said they really liked me and enjoyed the interview. They explained that the rejection emails were automatic, but that they can’t give me an offer right now because of internal issues they’re trying to resolve by the end of July. They also asked if I was still interested, and when I said I was flexible and not in a rush with the start date, they said that was “even better.”
The call felt positive and friendly, not like a normal rejection call.
Has anyone experienced something similar in a large research lab/company? What kind of internal issues could this usually mean: budget, headcount, project approval, hiring freeze? How would you interpret it?

Rejected for both positions, then invited to a call with the interview team. What could this mean?

Hi everyone,
I’m a bit confused and was wondering if anyone has experienced something similar.
I applied for **two research internship positions** at the same research lab. Since the roles were very similar, I only had **one technical interview**, which counted for both positions. At the end of the interview, they told me that if everything went well, **the next step would be an HR interview**, and that they would let me know by the middle of the following week.
Last week I received a rejection email for one of the positions, and yesterday I received another rejection email for the second one. So I assumed the process was over.
However, today one of the researchers who interviewed me emailed me saying:
*“We would like to schedule a quick call to update you on the status of your application. Would you be available any time tomorrow?”*
The call is with **the entire team**, which makes it even more confusing.
I’m trying not to get my hopes up, but I don’t really understand why they would schedule a call after sending rejection emails for both positions. They also specifically said it’s to **update me on the status of my application**, not to provide feedback.
Has anyone experienced something similar? What would you think in this situation?

AIO for being fed up with her?

Hi everyone, I’m looking for an outside perspective because the atmosphere in my apartment has become awful.

I live with two other girls. We all have one shared rental contract. There is a clause saying that if someone wants to leave, they can only terminate their part if they find someone to take over. They didn’t do that, and the agency initially told me I would have to cover the rent, but after I pushed back, it seems that’s not the case. I wrote to both roommates about it. One of them replied and said I was right and that she would keep paying until she finds a replacement. The other one didn’t answer.

The real problem is the roommate who didn’t answer. Living with her is becoming unbearable.

For example, the sink was broken while I was away for about a month. Instead of calling a plumber, telling the agency, or properly dealing with it, she took apart a pipe and put a bucket underneath it. She also never buys anything, neither toilet paper. I’ve been here for about a month and a half and I’m the only one who has bought it, so I finally started keeping my own toilet paper in my room. She doesn’t take out the trash either. I tested it once and, instead of taking the full bag out, she just closed it and put another bag on top. Now she takes full trash bags and leaves them next to the door, but still doesn’t actually take them out.

She also doesn’t clean. The kitchen and common spaces are constantly disgusting unless I deal with them.

Today I found a note from her saying something like, “I worked a night shift, I’m trying to sleep during the day, please be mindful if you’re in the kitchen.” It felt like a passive-aggressive jab because on Saturday I had some friends over for dinner. It wasn’t a party, just dinner, and I also live here and should be able to use the kitchen and common spaces normally.

I understand that working night shifts is hard, and I’m willing to be considerate. But I feel like it’s unfair for her to ask me to be careful and respectful when she doesn’t do the bare minimum as a roommate: cleaning, taking out trash, buying shared supplies, or dealing with maintenance issues properly.

The whole environment is tense and miserable now. I don’t know if I’m overreacting because I’m angry, or if she’s genuinely being a terrible roommate.

Am I overreacting for being fed up? I think that next step I will just leave the trash in front of her room

AITA for being fed up with my roommate and refusing to keep covering shared responsibilities?

Hi everyone,

I’m in a bit of a confusing situation and could really use some advice.

I’m a nonresident alien and I’ve already gone back home to Europe. Earlier this year I mistakenly filed Form 1040 using TurboTax, even though I should have filed Form 1040NR. Because of that, I ended up receiving a refund that I now realize I wasn’t actually entitled to.

As soon as I understood the mistake, I prepared the correct 1040NR and sent an amended return by mail (1040X and 1040NR) on February 5th.

Since then, I haven’t been able to get any clear updates. I can’t use the IRS tracking tools because they say they don’t work for people with foreign addresses. On my original 1040 I had used a US address, but on the amended 1040NR I put my foreign address. I called the IRS about a month ago and they told me it hadn’t been processed yet or maybe hadn’t even been received.

USPS tracking hasn’t helped either, it still says “in transit.” The weird thing is that I have the same tracking status for my state return, but that one actually arrived and I already received that refund, so I don’t really trust the tracking anymore.

At this point I don’t know what the best move is. Should I just go ahead and pay everything now, meaning the refund I received by mistake plus the amount I actually owe with the correct 1040NR? Or is it better to wait until the IRS processes the amendment? I’m also worried that if I wait I’ll end up with penalties or interest anyway.

If paying now is the right option, I’m also not sure how to do it correctly. Should I select payment for a regular 1040 or for an amended return? And since I’m abroad, I would need to pay with a debit card, so I’m not sure if that changes anything, and I don't know if I should put my foreign address (so the one on the 1040NR) or the US one (not mine anymore, but the one I put on the 1040)

I tried calling again today but couldn’t get through because of high call volume.

Has anyone been in a similar situation or knows what the safest approach is here? I’d really appreciate any guidance.
