Bait-and-switch pricing

Bait-and-switch pricing

The Mint Mobile pricing page shows a $15 promo price. Next to each price is a crossed out "normal" price. $15 for 6GB of data, $20 for 17GB, $25 for 23GB, and unlimited data for $30.

I signed up a phone I don't use much. Basically a backup, so low data use. $15 bucks even after the promo is better than the $30 I paid elsewhere, even if "elsewhere" was better service.

I sign up. I look in the app and it shows my first bill as $15 promo price ($45 for three months), and my next bill will be $75. I asked Mint why it went up, and was informed $15 is just the promo, and the normal price is $25.

This is a plain bait-and-switch. Hell, before I signed up I came to Reddit to ask what the non-promo pricing was, and was pointed to the "crossed-out" prices on the Mint page. I looked, and this is the ONLY place they say what the non-promo pricing is.

This is fraud, Mint Mobile. Shame on you. For a $5 difference I would have stuck with my previous provider. And of course you have my $45 sign-up fee as well.

EDIT: Two weeks ago I was on this sub asking what the non-promo pricing was. Every responder pointed to the crossed out prices on this screen. https://www.reddit.com/r/mintmobile/s/gXShTTEWlj

DANGER switching networks.

Somebody in a thread said you can switch the network used by your Cape phone, (e.g. AT&T to T-mobile), by going into the Network settings and messing with the SIM settings.

If you do this, you risk damaging your phone.

I switched to a different network, it didn't work well. Fiddled a little bit, and then even when I switched back to defaults it wouldn't connect. After a long talk with Cape tech support, it turns out I'd triggered a bug in Android that physically damages the phone in a way that it will no longer work with Cape.

Supposedly will still work with other carriers, just not with the unusual stuff Cape does for privacy.

Just a warning. Cape is working on a feature to let you switch networks, but until then, do NOT try to do it manually!

UPDATE: Confirmed it works fine with a physical SIM from another carrier. Have not tested another eSIM.

Circular support

App: shows "set up password" button under the "loading" spinner, but removes it the instant screen becomes active.

Me: Hi I can't activate my phone.

Phone tree app: Okay! Go to our website for support!

Website: okay to log in, see the code I sent to you via text.

Um, yeah. I didn't get the code because I can't activate my phone.

Genuinely one of the most maddening UI design clusterf***s I've ever witnessed.

Diamonds in the rough: the Mythos Codices

I'm in several RPG subreddits, (and other places online), and it's surprising how often someone pops up asking for help running campaigns based on real world mythology (especially Norse). Any time I see it, I bring up the Codex Nordica or whichever one is appropriate.

Common result always seems to be that 1) the OP has never heard of it, and 2) is excited to hear about it.

I think Troll Lord really struck something valuable with these books. It's just a case of getting the word out better.

Also: the Codex Egyptium is on sale today on DriveThru :-)

Get rid of dragon eggs?

Been building a large building. In creative mode my kid decided it would be fun to dump a bunch of dragon eggs all over the place. Now I can't get rid of them, because breaking them just makes them teleport a short distance.

Anyone know a reasonable way to get rid of them?

Open a second file from file browser?

I'm running OnlyOffice on Linux Mint. OO is my default for "office" files, from the MS formats to odt, ods, and similar. If I double click a file in the file browser, it opens in OnlyOffice. *However*, if I already have a file open, and then double click another office file, it doesn't open.

The only way to open a second file is the Home > Open dialog within OnlyOffice.

This seems like a pretty significant bug, and it's a real pain in the neck. Does anyone know of a fix for this?

Chained referral codes

Just curious... So if I'm signing up myself and my wife, I understand the referral codes is how Cape handles "friends and family". I grab someone's code from online, sign myself up. Then I sign up my wife and use my own referral code. Use my wife's code to sign up my kid, etc.

Do I end up paying the higher price for the first month, as my wife obviously hasn't used my code before the code exists? Or is there some sort of grace period to get those referrals in when signing up? Am I paying $50 my first month and don't get my wife's referral discount until the second month?

Play Services needed?

I'm using GrapheneOS, and I'm considering switching to Cape. However, I note the app says I need Google Play Services. I don't have Google Play, (and am not willing to install it.) Can I use Cape or not?

What's the regular rate?

[UPDATE: I see it. It's the small, faded, crossed out text next to the promo rates. Blame my poor vision; I looked right past it. Thanks, all.]

I'm looking to get new service, and a buddy pointed me to Mint Mobile. I went to the site to check them out, and I see a $15 promotional rate slathered all over the place. And of course there's that fine print that says "regular rates" will kick in after my promotion is over.

Okay, so what are the regular rates? I cant find that anywhere on the site.

C&C hardcovers, rated

If I were starting over with C&C, this is the order in which I would acquire books. I'm not going to bother with the bare essentials (PHB, M&T, and CKG). Those go without saying.

Adventurers Backpack — a must-have expansion on the Handbook, with some really interesting new character classes, expanded equipment listings, and rules for different variations on multiclassing (enhanced classes, class plus, dual class, etc.).

Adventurers Armory — move beyond "yet another short sword" and equip your character with something memorable and unique. Also has fun expanded combat rules and additional combat actions.

(It occurs to me if Troll Lord want to further distinguish themselves from D&D, they could rename the PHB the Adventurers Handbook, in keeping with their other titles.)

I've never been big on pre-established world books, as I prefer to use my own settings; but if you're looking for setting, Codex of Aihrde is an obvious choice. They also have the Haunted Highlands and a couple others worth checking out. NOTE that Troll Lord has a free 66-page PDF book on the Airdhe setting, which is a good primer and lighter reading than the main book.

(Honorable mention is to take one of the remarkable range of cool old AD&D 2E settings such as Ravenloft or Dark Sun. C&C is pretty compatible with old AD&D resources, so this is totally an option.)

Another direction you might take for setting are the mythological Codex books. I actually think these are a really cool and different offering unique to Troll Lord. Codex Nordica is a favorite of one of my players. Personally I think the Codices Celtarum and Egyptium are interesting. (One minor complaint here is the Codex Celtarum describing the Oracle, and then telling us to just use the one from Codex Classicum. I don't have that book. Celtarum should stand on its own!) These books also have new setting-appropriate classes and spells.

An older book I quite like was a random find at a game auction a while back — the Classic Monsters & Treasure. Basically a monster book starring older, no-longer-common monsters. Yay, flumph! Of course, if you want devils and demons, the new Codex Infernum is well done.

(Another honorable mention to the r/bettermonsters subreddit for good monster lore.)

The Monstrous Armory, is not as vital, but a fun read, and good inspiration for making your monsters more memorable and unique.

Lots of stuff I skipped — especially adventure and setting. Those are very specific to the preferences of the game master.

What do I want to see next? The completist in me awaits the Adventurers Spellbook. I'm curious to further check out the Amazing Adventures books — especially the psionics rules, which I may swipe for C&C games. I believe Troll Lord was working on a Barsoom book, thought be honest I may jump to Hollow Earth Expeditions' excellent Mars sourcebook (and system) if I ever want some John Carter action.

I'm wondering how well the Siege engine would lend itself to horror or similar genre changes. Hard to compete with good old Call of Cthulhu on that front, so maybe not the best direction to take.

Hmmm... I guess I would like to see something like a good book of short adventures, or even just hooks. The sort of thing to inspire game masters without handing then whole mapped out adventures. A sketch to be filled out.

Martial Classes

[Update: in D&D, the "martial" classes are any non-spellcaster. C&C appears to have assumed their customers know modern D&D.)

Adventurers Backpack Armory has rules for "martial classes", but doesn't define the term. Some are obvious: fighters, barbarians, knights. A few are less obvious. So here's my list I'm using:

  • Archer
  • Barbarian
  • Blade Dancer
  • Divine Knight
  • Etherial Knight
  • Fighter
  • Foresworn
  • Knight
  • Monk
  • Oathsworn
  • Paladin
  • Ranger
  • Warrior Priest
  • Iron Born Dwarf

The Pacer is a weird one. I've always regarded the class as an "urban ranger" — pacers are to cities what rangers are to the wilderness. But this doesn't seem to go so far as calling them "martial". Are pacers more of a Rogue class? (Are rangers a rogue class?)

I've seen people count Bards as martial, but those definitely seem closer to a rogue class.

CORRECTION: Adventurers Armory, not Backpack.

"Nearby Devices" permission?

I'm looking at app permissions, and I have a handful of apps where I allowed the Nearby Devices permission.

There's a lesser level of this permission called "Allow to keep app working", and it seems like practically every app on my phone has this turned ON.

What is the "keep app working" version of this permission, and why is it on for basically every app? Even silly things like a timer, or a dice roller. Is it just on by default unless I turn it off? Will I mess things up if I turn it off?

For example, if I turn it off on a music or podcast app, will it not be able to find my earbuda or something? [EDIT: scratch that. it explicitly says the app can't connect to things via Bluetooth with just the "keep app working" setting. I guess the music app just lets the system handle that?]

Copy a conversation?

I want the ability to copy an entire conversation to paste elsewhere.

I just had to do it piecemeal, copying each separate question, and each separate response, manually, and assembling them in my notes app. I hope I didn't miss anything! What a pain in the neck.

This is especially important as Lumo deletes old sessions, even if I mark them as favorites.

Apps you wish worked without Google

What is a good app you miss having because you degoogled your phone (e.g. GrapheneOS) and it doesn't work without Google?

EDIT: Allow for things like microG with all connections turned OFF, or Graphene's sandboxed GOS with no permissions. No connecting to Google.

Liquidation Sale

If you haven't heard, Troll Lord is having a liquidation sale on older titles. Whatever copies they don't sell will be destroyed, so get 'em while they're hot!

The more you buy, the cheaper they are, so one book is $20 or four books is... $20. [EDIT: Was just messing with the site and it appears they're no longer discounting for multiple books? Still, they're $20 each.]

Just got my books and have been checking them out. (Darn it I missed out on the older M&T printing. Wanted that because I've been interested in comparing the before and after OGL.)

Anyway, some books are worth getting, especially for five bucks. The Players Archive has five character classes not found in the PHB or the Backpack: Chromatic Mage, Duelist, Eldritch Goblin, Luminary, and Pirate.

There's an Amazing Adventures (pulp adventure) book for D&D 5E rules; and a 5E edition of the Undying War campaign. (Undying War should be easy to play with C&C.)

The one I was really interested in was the Adventurers Spellbook. A master book of all spells from all sources. (Yes, they just did a Kickstarter for the next edition, but the old book is pretty good too.)

Check it out here: http://trolllord.com/product-category/liquidation-sale

Original RM dead battery?

I have the original Remarkable. Recently it simply stopped charging. Screen says I need to charge the battery, but I can plug it in for days and it won't start up. Button press does nothing even when plugged in.

Any advice? Can the battery be replaced? Some other way to fix?

Best intro episodes to TOS

I'm not super familiar with TOS. It was on reruns when I was a kid, and I basically grew up with TNG.

I want to introduce my kids to Trek, and thought I'd start with Kirk and crew. I'm wondering what the best episodes are for this. So either the best to watch, or the ones I should skip.

My eldest (10) isn't too into sci fi, so this is slightly uphill to get them to watch.

Logging in to Google — must I?

I currently use a phone running microG. I'm considering GrapheneOS. If I install Graphene, but I want to use apps that use some of the Google libraries (that I know run fine on microG), do I have to also *log in* to Google? Or can I just install the sandboxed Google Services, NOT log in, and the libraries are just there for apps to use?

I would not use the actual Play Store to get my apps. (I know Google wants us to log in for that!)

On microG I don't log in to Google at all. No notifications, no verification or attestation.
I tried GrapheneOS in the past, and it seemed bizarre to me that the ultimate "degoogled" OS wanted me to log into Google for basic functionality.

ADDITIONAL: Those of you who don't log in, what is your preferred way of getting apps (including apps most people would get from the Play Store)? Aurora Store? Something else? Additional^2 non-FOSS. I know about F-Droid.

I have the standard firewall that comes with Mint. It's turned on with basic settings (allow out, deny in).

I also have OpenSnitch running.

Are these redundant, or do they complement each other? I'm guessing they work together, because Firewall handles incoming, and OpenSnitch handles outgoing — is that right?

(As a side note, anyone else having trouble with VPN when OpenSnitch is installed?)
