Namco Museum Vol 1 (ps1) Review

Who not knows me. I actually use all 10 numbers. A 5 of 10 is already a fun game. just not outstanding.

Toy Pop (1986): A surprisingly complex game for its time. Not only does it have actual stages, but it also features multiple weapons and a large variety of different enemies, each requiring a specific weapon to defeat. It also has a quite catchy jingle.

The problem: The game is not balanced at all. While the idea of using different weapons for different enemies is cool on paper, the stages are poorly designed. Since you cannot switch weapons without picking up a new one, you frequently have to dodge enemy types you cannot currently kill. The stages are often too narrow to properly dodge enemies, making it a game of pure luck whether you get the correct weapon drop at the right time. Additionally, because there are no continues, beating all 42 stages and the overturned boss as intended is basically impossible.

Conclusion: 4/10

Bosconian (1981): This game was actually a technical milestone being the first game that allowed 8 direction of movement. While it has no music the sound effects are cool and it has a few elements of stylish voice over.

This game is brutally hard but fair for the most part. It just has the tendency to spawn enemies right in your face. Else it's cool that you have to use the force here to hit the core of space stations.
But seriously... This game is hard as hell.

I mean... How hard can a game be. It's already hard to get in your shots. But the constant spawns of enemies and later Bosconian's starting to protect their core makes this a game where a split second decision can cost you a run.

But hey. The game actually gives you a fair amount of lives I think. You will need them... Because did I mention that this game is dificult. i do think I should, just to make sure. (I'm actually one of 5 people that got the beaten Retro Achievement for this one.)

Conclusion: 5/10 (barely missed the 6)

Pac-Man (1980): I never was a big fan of the classic Pac-Man gameplay. While I like some of the later games that add some more creative labyrinth and power ups, I think the original game just isn't that much fun. The game has one stage with the only difference between level being that everything moves quicker and more points for special items.

Moreover the port that is on this collections just isn't good with the ghosts often time resetting their AI making them move in unpredictable patterns.
Of course the Pac-Man jingle is still very good though.

Also despite my dislike for Pac-Man I can't deny that it has it's moments of fun if you get into a flow and manipulate the ghost like puppets.

Conclusion: 4/10

Galaga (1981): Oh yes Galaga. I do see the appeal of this one. The game can quickly get very hectic. One problem I see though is that their are moments where you absolutely HAVE to hit enemies, or you run into unwinnable spots. This is hard to do as you are only allowed to have two bullets on screen at once. Miss twice and you are screwed.

I'm also not a big fan of the bonus stages. Not only do you have to play perfectly, you also need to perfectly memorize them. I never think that "memorization" is that fun of a skill check.
But it did create the bullet hell genre so I'm thankful for that.

In some stages the enemies start to move ridiculously quickly. I would recommend using the good old pause trick to actually see where you can dodge. On Retro Achievement you have to beat 16 Stages of this. So it is harder as it seems at first.

Conclusion: 5/10

Pole Position (1982): A game that was the inspiration for many very good speed racer in the Nes and Snes era. It's easy to see why. Even though the game has only one track and a simple one at that, it is just extremely fun. Learning how to perfectly take the corners needs quite some training and good timing, and I love the transfer challenge of getting this while dealing with more and more cars on the track. It also doesn't overstay its welcome. One qualify lap for warm up and then 4 laps in the race.

I don't think there was music in this one, but the cars actually sound very nice. Despite being completely 2D and drawn, it does feel 3D somehow. It is the best-looking game on this collection. There is not much bad I could say about this one. Yet, obviously it's a game you beat once and then you are happy.

Conclusion: 7/10

Rally-X (1980): Oh boy. If you look up "unfair" in a dictionary, you will see a picture of this game. This game is not just arcade hard; it's basically unplayable without abusing pause buffering. Its main obstacle, the red cars, follows the same principle as the Pac-Man ghosts. But take away the rules that sometimes make the ghosts predictable and any power-up to deal with them. Also, every single one of the cars acts like a combination of Blinky and Pinky. Oh, did I also mention that the cars are not just quicker than you, they are much quicker?

While you have to deal with this madness, you have to collect 10 flags that spawn completely randomly in a complex labyrinth you have to fully memorize if you want any hope of getting through. But don't think memorizing it is enough. There are also some random rock spawns that create unexpected dead ends that can completely mess you up.

Of course, the labyrinths are also extremely badly designed. There are plenty of spots where you are always dead if the cars force you inside, or where you have to make a kamikaze commitment. Because you also have a very short time limit in this game, and the only weapon to fight back eats away at it. There were plenty of moments where the enemy cars camped the last flag and I died due to not being able to get there.

The first round of this starts with 3 cars. There are already 7 cars at stage 6 (the amount I had to beat). Just imagine how fun this is. Even with pause buffering, the enemies are moving so chaotically that you need luck to survive.

All of this is supported by horrible controls. In Pac-Man, if you hit a wall without steering, you just stop and lose a little time and likely distance to the ghosts. In Rally-X, the car just automatically turns - always directly into death if possible. Oh, and the game also loves to eat inputs. So be prepared to deal with a lot of random turns.

If this were not enough, the game tortures you with an ear-bleeding OST that does not fit the game at all. It also looks bad compared to Pac-Man.

I oftentimes made the joke "that winning is not a mechanic that is intended in this game."

Conclusion: 1/10

New Rally-X (1981): This game is an update to the original that tries to fix every issue the original has. It starts with only 1 enemy car and slowly builds up more. They took the original levels and created more pathways in them for less kamikaze commitments. They placed less rocks. They zoomed the vision more out. The cars move somewhat slower and try to be a little more predictable. They added a map marker for the flag you should get first for extra points. They also added a "last" flag that just straight not works and only slows the game down. They give you 1 more life and allow the player to get 2 instead of 1 extra lives. LUXUS!

Yet, it just shows how bad the original Rally-X is that it is still a bad game despite everything they tried. The controls are still bad and the overall problem with the enemies is still there. It just gives you a little more of a warm up. Even the levels are still bad despite being improved.
But the worst part is. They somehow managed to make the game even more ugly and the sound effects and OST of this one should be forbidden by the Geneva Convention. How can you make a game sound this bad? This has to be on purpose!

Conclusion: 1/10

Overall: I do like the museum part of the collection. it's quite cute and need. But if I look at this one as a collection then Rally-X really pulls it down. You have to consider that they make 2/7 of this package. Also most of the game just aren't that much fun nowadays anymore. I can see that some people might still enjoy Pac-Man and Pole Position is cool. But else as a overall package I have to give it a 3/10. I don't think their is that much value for people to play this nowadays unless they have nostalgia for Arcade games.

How I Got One of the Hardest "Beaten" Retro Achievements of the PS1

I know I already shared in the forum in a certrain threat. But I'm just too proud on it. I wonder if this will motivate someone else crazy to become the 6th to beat this:)

A little tactic question

I'm doing a console challenge playing all ps1 games in japanese release order (as long as I can play them)
In my last stream I started to get stuck with a really hard game. Yet, this game has RA achievement and as a extra rule I decided that if a game has RA, I need to get the "beaten" badge in it.
However, one of the progression task is really blocking me now.
My gamer honor makes me really want to get it to be one of 3% who ever got it. If I get it this would be for sure a nice stream recording for a scripted "how I got..." video.
But on the other hand I fear like people might are not interested in someone struggling that much.

Is their a point where you should just forgo your challenge rules to move on?

Right now I'm stuck at a really difficult Retro Achievement

Do you think I should make a "how I got one of the most difficult achievements" scripted video If i somehow end up getting it?

https://retroachievements.org/achievement/403200

To be fair it's a big "if" I'm trying for gameplay 10 hours at this point:)

And how to you even make a video like this in the first place?

Did start playing Golden Sun for the first time today

I'm very curious how it will be. Recently finished Beyond the Beyond in my Ps1 streaming project. Well, and this game was a mess. So I became very curious what Golden Sun is like, because this one is said to be very good.

I not want spoilers. But I allow some tips for things I not want to miss. Being that I will play this very slowly due to recording it. People have a lot of time steering me in the right direction.

And as said I'm super excited. Because I'm not done with the intro yet (not fully) but it already is very interesting. The tutorial dungeon already was so much better as everything Beyond the Beyond has to offer.

For People that Live Lets Play on Twitch

It looks like Amazon secretly activated generative AI training for it's creators without asking. On my pov this should be considered a crime. Anyway make sure you deactivate it before your next streams.

PS:
Oh right forgot to mention it. You can deactivate it in your profile "security and privacy" tab. You have to scroll far down. They really want to make sure people overlook it!

I think Beyond the Beyond is worth another deeper review of me:)

I really want to do this for "good" games too. But thus far there have not been that many games with enough content to give me a base for such a review.

Beyond the Beyond, released on 11th November 1995 and made by Camelot, is their first true-to-form RPG and kind of a prototype for the much better Golden Sun that was released on Nintendo consoles. Some prototypes are a little rough but already show the potential. Sadly, BTB is a case of: "How did this turn into Golden Sun?"

But let's go through this step by step. The game starts like many classical RPGs, classical RPGs that were released 10 years before this. We are a boy in a little village that is just going through his daily adventures until he gets dragged into a conflict with an invading empire.

Most of it still seems fine. We have nice sprite work, a simple battle system, and a little humor without much substance.

But the cracks are already showing if you pay attention. The graphics of the over world assets look a little like early SNES. A little weird for a PS1 game but okay. Most animations are a little simple and the menu controls are very tedious. You have, for example, to buy one item at a time or have to save in a church.

Anyway, after the first dungeon you quickly will start to notice that the encounter rate is very high. And not just "retro" high. You sometimes basically can only take 2 steps before the next battle. So even moving on the over world gets annoying very quickly.

Reaching the nearby kingdom that gets occupied, you will notice quickly that a lot of the interesting stuff just happened off-screen. But hey, you have some fun animations and still get the feeling this might get more interesting. Here the game throws a "really" fun twist. One of your party members gets cursed. The curse not only weakens his stats, it sometimes makes him not attack or damage him if he attacks.

Get used to this curse... Because he will keep it for the next 12 hours of play. Yep, you are forced to babysit a character that is kind of useless for a big part of the story.

It is also at this point that the game throws the first riddle at you. A concept they would make much more use of in Golden Sun. The game actually has some nice dungeon riddle ideas here and there. There is, for example, a tower where you switch between nighttime and daytime to move stuff around. Or there is a cave where you can become tiny to move through holes. There is a vine dungeon in which you have to carry water to make flowers grow.

Sadly, none of this turns out to be fun if any kind of exploration gets interrupted every 3 seconds with fights. You can't even do an ice-sliding puzzle without 20 battles in between.

Something that is very good in this game is the music for the most part. Some of the dungeon tracks are nice (if you're allowed to hear them) and the battle themes are overall fine.

But let's move on. We reach the next kingdom where we quickly get sent on a side quest to cure the curse. This side quest is not telegraphed at all and no one really tells you what you have to do at this point. It turns out that the place where the curse can be healed is even optional at this point. Instead, you have to travel the whole continent doing random fetch quests till you eventually turn up in a water cave.

This is, by the way, where you will meet the first boss after 10 hours of play. It's one of 7 boss fights the game has. Don't get too excited, though. Because at this point you will have noticed that fights in this game are mostly just auto-attacking. The game has two more "fun" details hidden in its battle system that make all of this a torture. First of all, there is a hidden "active battle" system. If you mash buttons, your character "Sometimes" ""if they feel like it"" does crit attacks or follow-up strikes. Even more unlikely, they defend or counter.

Yep, the game forces you to auto-attack and spam buttons all game in the hope you get good hits.

There is also magic, but for magic they had the truly evil idea to make even the most basic spells cost 6 MP, while even your mages have only 60/70 MP at the end of the game. You would think the spells at least do crazy damage.

But no!

Auto-attacks just out scale them. Even the mages do more physical damage than magic damage. Spells are only used to buff attack or heal.

Now you can imagine how boss fights work. Every single one just has a lot of HP and sometimes uses AOE attacks. You buff ATK and then just auto-attack them till they are dead. There is no tactic or interesting mechanic here.

One more thing the first boss will show you is how bad the EXP scaling is in this game. You would think that in a game like this where you fight non-stop, you would be overpowered easily. You think wrong. At some point you will have to grind even to keep up and bosses give no EXP at all.

Looking at this positively, the endgame is so weak that you will be overpowered for it without trying. Also don't look up too big numbers. My record was 215 damage on the end boss with a crit. You never will get above 100 with normal attacks or spells.

Getting near the end of this first Arc, we might get the "best part" of the game. Where we get the above-mentioned vine and tower dungeons in a row. But don't get used to this. Because these 2 dungeons belong to the few dungeon designs that are not just caves in another color. You also will start to notice that we might get new enemies regularly, but every single one feels the same. Very rarely you have one that can poison or later on one that can instant game over you (only this one).

Many enemies start to spam magic now. Remember, we can't use it. But don't worry, there is an intended bug where a battle buff item for resistance is somehow permanent and gives you 50% resistance against magic for the whole game. There is nothing in the game that tells you about this, by the way.

As you will now start to need more heal items, you will start to notice that you have very limited inventory space. Equipment and quest items all take away this space, and you can't drop quest items even if you don't need them anymore. So you will have some items at the end of the game you only can try to store with another character. Oh, and you will notice that the game has a limited amount of rings, with most of them being useless.

Whatever, we reach the top of the tower and meet God, who finally tells us our real quest. Guy gaslights us about how he "led" us there. Despite there being no moment in the game that even told us that we have to visit him. The lazy grandpa can't act because of some weird rule the villain can just break and he can't, and sends us to get some tablets. Don't think these tablets would be hidden in cool spots. One of them is seriously just inside a random cave without any explanation why.

We are finally allowed to break the curse, get Boss 2 (there is no boss in the tower), weaker than the first one, and move back to our kingdom. Don't expect a cool battle now. The war is very simple and done quickly. Inside the castle, we get the most obvious hypnosis "good guy" twist setup and meet our main Villain, who tells us 20 times that he should just kill us... But of course he doesn't do it.

After all these exciting events, you would think that the story now gets truly into motion. Sadly, this is also a no. You now move on to the enemy kingdom without any break. And the way to the kingdom is a very long snake way of over world that doesn't look like a fantasy world but really just level design. In the kingdom, you easily topple the empire, get some scenes with your not-father that "dies", but of course no boss fight. It really is just another town on your way, and the war threat gets solved just like that.

Here we get our 6th party member, by the way. But don't get excited. Every party member joins completely underleveled. And not only this, they join with subpar stats too compared to the character you leveled up regularly. I still put him in because the 5th character I had was the only mage that can't do physical damage.^^

Hey, we also get a ship here. Don't get attached to it. We only visit two places with it and then it gets replaced by our airship of this game. Oh, this airship gets replaced by another airship just one dungeon later too. Also, traveling with a ship is no fun as it sometimes just spawns endgame enemies for no reason and has an even worse encounter rate than normal movement. Also, be careful: the first time you enter the ship, you can find a world map. You easily can miss this and never can get it again.

As you notice, we now speed up to the end of the game all of a sudden. For example, we visit another kingdom for a tablet. It gets invaded basically off-screen, and a scene later we have our 3rd tablet and a party member we never will play because even more underleveled. We also get a promotion here that doesn't even have a nice animation despite changing the look of our characters. Also, the promotion doesn't give power-ups directly. It allows us to wear the endgame stuff and level quicker for a while.

After this, we get the random cave dungeon with a tablet and can fetch our better airship. There is a new villain being introduced that kills our dragon! Oh no! But the dragon returns basically the next scene after it, and of course we don't have a boss fight here. What are you smoking? An RPG?

With the better airship, we can do a bonus dungeon that is a boring ice cave and not difficult for some end gear, and we can go attack the villain we just met. This leads to boss fight 3. Obviously, nothing special here.

And that is it. Now the final part of the game starts. There is really no story or interesting exploration at this point anymore. The game gave completely up on it.

From here, we get a very small piece of background info on the main villain that doesn't lead to much except a weird attempt to give him some depth at the last second. We then go through the Try and Error dungeon. It's a dungeon with hidden holes everywhere and multiple floors. You have to memorize all of the holes through the good old stepping-into-them method. You also find a lot of cursed gear you don't want to use, obviously.

At the end of the dungeon waits the most obvious "he is not evil" boss of the game. You can do nothing in the fight and recruit him. You would think this guy has to be strong now... right? But nope. He is actually the weakest character in the game, basically unplayable. Oh, I want to remind you that this is boss fight number 4 in the whole game.

While making sure we never have to see the face of this waste of time anymore, we can finally move to the final dungeon. This dungeon has the fun concept that you have to carry orbs all the way down to the end of the dungeon. But you can only take one orb with you. So you have to do it twice. Cool, isn't it?

The dungeon starts with the only villain that had a little story. The biggest mage of the underworld, who mostly just physically attacks you. Even he understands it :)

Is there a reward at the end of the dungeon? Nope. It ends in a boss fight with the barely characterized main Villain and his girlfriend, who can be cheesed with silence. Not that this would be necessary. Somehow, I even got an ambush on this "BOSS" fight. The true boss after them has only one attack he uses and nothing else. Of course, he also goes down like a level 1 slime.

At least the game ends in a perfect way. For me, the final cut scene glitched out, creating a fun situation where the main hero is supposed to fly away on his dragon but just awkwardly floats through the air.

---

Camelot actually ends this game with a sequel bait. Something that obviously never happened considering how bad this game turned out. But as we know, that still got a happy ending because they somehow managed to fix all the ideas this game had and it became Golden Sun. Because underneath all its misery, the base ideas for Golden Sun exist.

Second try of making a thumbnail for a highlight video

I'm just very bad in designing. My idea is to integrate elements of all kind of games I played in a week.
For my other videos I usually do a very simple style. But as this are supposed to be advertisement for my content, I try to be a little more attention grabbing.

u/Stesspela — 11 days ago

I'm a autistic person and I'm sorry if I might sometimes overeact a little bit

I have the feeling I might just did wrong do someone here. I saw a comment that felt like "I stopped your video after 15 seconds. This is my deep analysis."

But maybe this actually was meant as fair feedback. As said I'm thankful for every feedback I get because I want to improve. And even if this escalated a little bit. I do think this gave me a little more feedback.

It sounds like people really dislike how slow I talk and my humor doesn't land at all right now. I wonder how I can best fix the later one. Can't fix the first point as this is part of my speak issues overall.

I do think my biggest issue right now is that i might not signal the jokes strongly enough. Is there a trick how to communicate this better to the watcher? Because I really struggle to get a good hook for my videos. I think the best solution would to start with some kind of punchline right away. But my last try obviously not worked

I don't get it^^

What about this video is so appealing for the algo? Sure it also only has 200 Impressions. But not only does it still recommend it, people actually click on it and watch it?
I'm quite sure that I have played more exciting games as this and also did better commentary while playing. So what is the secret of this video?

Is it really the length of 23:10 minutes that makes the difference? Because if this is the case, then my "highlights of the week" extra format might really could fix my problem with getting under 10 Impressions on all videos^^

I just randomly lost advanced functions today and had to reapply my identity on Youtube?

Is this a problem you had too before? What could be the reason. I mean right now I not have any growth at all. Could this mean they decided that my channel has a negative history now?

I'm actually looking for a new LGBTQ+ positive gacha community

For one reason or another, I for once am just done with a certain one. Because I'm not a fan of toxicity and this certain sub (I not want to call names) is at this point only about hating on other gacha games and disregarding everything as Go... bait.

For me LGBTQ+ is about being open minded and not disregarding everything you not like as bait. Do I enjoy having more Gacha that do stuff differently. Absolutely. (Limbus Company fan) But I don't think it's correct to be just as exclusive as the LGBTQ+ hater.

Sure their are moments where I also not like directions some games go. But if the whole subreddit starts to be only about it, it's gets annoying. If I not like what a game is doing, I say "It is not for me." but I not go around and act like I stand above everyone that enjoys it.

Rant about how we try to enforce Rule 3

To make it clear: I'm fully okay in limiting horny being posted in the main Limbus reddit. We have a extra place for it and I don't think that a main reddit to a gacha should be full of seductive art.

But the way the mods try to handle the rule right now is just not clever and kind of arbitrary. I thought the goal of this rule change is to make sure it not feels arbitrary?

Lets start with what is good: The first 3 parts of the rule. They are very clear and nobody can claim they misunderstood them. We have a clear rule against hentai/nudity.

Rule 4 to 6 would be okay too... However, then the mod team tries to over define them. Rather than just say. No implicated sexual act or pictures that clearly focus on fetish. They start to define what kind of fetish is okay...
THIS IS A PROBLEM.

Because who checked out the reddit lately will have notice a lot of pictures that clearly should break Rule 4 here. But they don't. Having Dante and Don in foreplay, is okay despite it being hard implicated they about to do it. Having Don wearing basically nothing and offering you to hug her is okay because... well because pretty I guess.

I have seen some pictures lately that I would have removed based on the logic of rule 3. But that are okay. So instead of limiting the amount of horny. Right now we just define what kind of horny is okay and we keep having the same situation as before.

I think we are adults here. We are able to tell when a picture is clearly stepping over the line and when not. As it works right now people will try out edge cases just forcing you do add more "exemptions"

Guess the Game (A easy one for the first time)

If you like this, I might actually try to not use easy screen shots. Just thought it's funny to let you guess what I played:)

I think this is the best the game gives me, right?

The alternative would have been her transformed adult version that stretches her basically uncovered rear towards the screen. So I think I should prefer the cute one. Old games are weird.

But it's a Japanese parody Beat Em up game so what do I expect.

Why are their this many post here that are only about becoming big and successful?

I sometimes get this sub shown and its always the same kind of post: "Why is my channel not sucessful. Every other channel puts way less effort into it and is bad."

I especially get angry about a certain gaming post. Were people keep circlejerking about how low effort lets plays are ans why the people not do research to get viral?

Did anybody here even considers once that some people don't want to get ritch quick? Some people just create to impress themselve. And well if it's a ^^^low quality badly edited^^ gaming video, its totally okay.

Lets talk about myself for a moment. I had the crazy idea to play all PS1 games. Even recording and uploading anything already took all my courage. At no point did I ever think this would be a "get ritch" concept. Playing ps1 games nobody knows is surely not a secret nieche;)

At the get go I decided to not optimize for the algorythmus but slowly try to improve with each game. As a streamer first I could just uploads the streams. But I decided to edit them a little bit for the unlikely case someone actually wants to watch 100hours of a retro rpg where nothing happens:)

At this point the only decision i made to improve my odds of being discovered was switching to english. Yet the main reason for this decision is to train my english free speaking skills.

Is it really that impossible for some people to see this only as a hobby? Is it impossible to consider that the first aim of someone isn't to go viral but maybe just share their passion for something?

Pokemon Crystal concept

With my first try of a "all achievements" side project Pokemon Yellow coming to an end. I was wondering what I could make better in Pokemon Crystal that would be the most obvious next choice.

I mean first of all I will likely switch to englisch just like I do with my live stuff now. But apart from that their are a few flaws I notice I surely need to do better.

First of all. Crystal has much more crazy Retro Achievement conditions. In this game you really have to 100% everything and all boss fights have level cap conditions. Their are also more complex sidequest in this game compared to the first generation.
This means I will have to look up my next steps all the time. There is simply no way around it.

My first hard call here is to say: "Cut a lot! Stop trying to play and comment. Rather treat it like a walktrough where I just keep in where all the stuff and pokemon are."

Then I notice that keeping all the battles is likely not very exciting too. Sure, keeping the actually challenges like this RA have will be exciting. But people don't want to see every single trainer battle. Again I think it's better to just show the "story/dialogue of the trainers" and only keep battles if something fun happened.

So to say it more shortly again. I think the best way to handle this 100% Achievement lets play would to treat it like a walktrough with story. What do you say?

The concept of "Plot-Induced Stupidity".

I think this is a writing trick people really need to learn here. In a manga like kingdom where most character are super strong or geniuses it's very hard to come up with excuses of why character did fall for traps or risk going 1 vs 1 against a strong warrior.

Hara and many other fantasy authors therefore like to use the trick of temporarily stupidity to keep the story rolling. If Shin instinct would work all the time, he simply never would get into dangerous situations. If people would show their whole genius all the time, Riboku's tricks would rarely work.

Sometimes as a reader you have to just accept heroes to make bad decisions. Sometimes you have to accept that character get tunnel vision if they see a advantage. I think Hara does a good job with it overall because he not uses it all the time and he usually comes up with good excuses for it.

But yeah. The character in kingdom make a lot of bad decisions. Even some of the super clever character make stupid decision in order to be tricked.

Did you remember Keisha? This guy was a instictual genius. Yet in order to make the plot work he has to fall for Kanki's taunting.
