One of our cats will likely have a nephrectomy performed within the next few weeks and we’re trying to prepare in advance to make his recovery as comfortable as possible. Can anyone give us any general advice on what to expect and what to stock up on?

Hi everyone - looking for any advice on prognosis and next steps 💜💜
Our almost-14 year old cat Pickle has a cancerous mass taking up 25-30% of his right kidney. The aspirate was inconclusive, but the pathologist strongly suspects it is a renal sarcoma. It hasn’t visibly metastasized, but given how aggressive sarcomas are it may have spread microscopically. We are trying to decide whether to roll the dice and remove his kidney or focus on comfort measures and spare him the surgery recovery.
It’s a rare diagnosis, and we’re struggling to find studies or information about staging based on the mass’s size, prognosis if the kidney is removed, likelihood that is has already spread microscopically, etc. We’re also confused about the “presumed” part of the diagnosis and whether it’s worth removing the kidney in case it’s a different, less aggressive type of tumor. Does anyone have any advice for a case like this? Happy to share results and imaging if that would be helpful.
