how are the interviews?

Incoming g12 and I am planning on applying to UoFT Chem Eng, waterloo Chem Eng, and McMaster Chem Eng (I believe these are the three that require interviews). How are they? And how important are they for getting an offer if your grades are great? I have a 97 avg. also, would I be in the upper or lower bounds if my ECs are just very average (nothing very notable but not empty either).

also how competitive would I be for uoft chem? Same with Queen’s Engineering Chemistry, engineering chemistry and Western Chemical Engineering?

How much does the personal statement matter?

Hello! I'm planning on applying to Warwick, King's College, UCL, Manchester, and Oxford for a 4 year chemistry program, and I was wondering how much the personal statement matters if I have solid grades. I am an international student, with a 40 predicted IB score.

I've heard it matters a lot for cut-throat programs like med, but I wasn't sure how important it is for something like chemistry which is still STEM but not tier 1.

Also, I've had mixed feelings about even applying abroad because I'm worried I won't even get accepted to any of these. I have in-state universities I can and will apply to, but I wasn't sure if the time spent would be worth it.

Also, is a 40 predicted too low for these programs+schools? I have a couple of older friends who went abroad with 43+ but unfortunately I got a 5 on my first year French exam (but thankfully it was my worst subject by far.)

Hello! I am taking the G1 tomorrow and I was wondering if there are questions that only ask you about the fine associated with something.

For example, could all the answers say "6 Demerits" but then have fine ranges from $60-$500 to $400-$2000?

Also, if you remember some of the questions they will ask, lmk! I think I have most of the stuff down as I've finished g1.ca, 4 apps on iOS, and some other websites as well. (Plus quizlets on the demerits themselves).

Hi! What is the best way to know if I'm ready for the G1?

I'm a bit anxious for it, but I've been studying and doing practice tests and I can pull off 80%+, but how can I be sure I got it? Meaning how do I know I won't go in there and see more than 4 questions on each test that I've never seen before (and cannot easy guess off of elimination)? I'm not sure whether the questions I've been doing are easier/harder than the actual thing. Most of the questions are common sense (especially the signs), but some of the road rules can sometimes trick me up. What specific resources did y'all use, and for the ones who've done it, are the questions on said resource come close in style to the ones you see the day of? I'm planning on taking it tomorrow or the next day, as I started studying yesterday.

How hard really is thermodynamics?

I’m an aspiring either mechanical or chemical engineer going into Fall 2027, but I’ve been doing some general research on courses I’ll be taking and one that’s stuck out like a sore thumb is Thermodynamics I. With the others, I see a mix between ”hard” and “doable with practice” but with thermo, I literally only see 30% class averages and ”failed my first time” I genuinely have no idea how I’m getting fearmongered this early lmao. I’ve also been going through some 1st yr general physics stuff like electric fields and rigid bodies, and it’s not EASY but not like life changing 😭

I need help choosing a textbook for self study!

Hello! I have the option of using:
Raymond A. Serway, John W. Jewett - Physics for Scientists and Engineers with Modern Physics
Fundamentals of Physics, Volume 2, 12th Edition 2 -- David Halliday & Robert Resnick & Jearl Walker
University Physics with Modern Physics with Hugh D Young, Roger A Freedman, A Lewis Ford, Francis Weston 12th Edition, 2007

I'm primarily using it to self study Physics II to help me refine my understanding, as I'm in 12th grade.
I've went through Electric Fields / Gauss's Law / Potential with all books, and I cannot decide which one is better. On one hand, Serway has less problems but I found it to be still quite comprehensive, while Halliday had many more problems, but I cannot tell if there is more content being presented or if there are just more examples.

Also, side question: how do y'all choose what questions to do? I've just been asking AI to assign me like 10-15 problems and I do them, but there has to be a better way.

If I get accepted into UoFT Life Sciences, and get a prerequisite waiver for BIO120 (for sbi4u), what should I do to prepare?

long story short, timetable constraints couldn't let me take sbi4u. i emailed the office and they said i could do that, but they noted that bio120 isnt an introductory course, and hence is required to do some self study. if anyone has ever done this before, what would i need to do?

same thing for bio130, got a similar email on that regard. ive heard bio130 isnt an intro course either.

I was tired of all of the paid topical past paper sites, so I made my own, completely for free! Website: https://ommodi.site

Hey everyone!

Over the past few months I've been building a website that organizes IB questions by syllabus topic, and I finally have something I'm happy to share

Currently it includes:

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • Mathematics

Features:

  • Questions organized by the current and past IB syllabi
  • Combined topic question banks
  • Individual question PDFs
  • Fast search and navigation
  • No ads, no subscriptions, no paywall

It's still a work in progress, so I'd love feedback. If you find bugs, missing questions, or have ideas for features, let me know and I'll try to implement them.

How hard will it be for me to get into Rotman Commerce if my EC's are shit?

I need some insight!! Currently, here's what my stats look like:

(Domestic Student btw)
IB Predicted (40/45) - This likely doesn't matter but oh well.
Adv Functions: 98
Calc: 98
Chem: 99
Phys: 96
Eng: 94
French: 95
Philosophy: 96
History: 97

EC Wise:

Co-Founder of 2 Clubs,
Student Council Executive Secretary
40 Volunteer Hours, but for IB you need to do CAS Hours so I have 250 more of those (hopefully they recognize that) -> The things I've done, both long-term and short-term would be included here.
Weekly Peer Tutoring (up to 5-6 hours a week)
Personal things:
Self teaching an instrument, passionate about music in general.
Self teaching programming as well, also passionate about that.

As you can see, academics id say are slightly above avg, but the ecs are so bad :(
(i guess i cant make this excuse, but where i live, theres nothing like deca or stuff like that, and our school itself is super small so even mkaing 2 clubs is the largest thing there...)

I'm going into engineering, but as a current highschool student with calculus as the most advanced math I know, could someone recommend me a Linear Algebra textbook / resource?

On the other hand, I might be dumb, but I skimmed through the first chapter or two (not fully grasping things), from Axler/Strang's books, but I feel like I'm missing something, because it just feels like a whole story higher than what I'm currently doing. Like, I've done nothing like this, and I'm afraid for 1st year engineering if I'm just going to be thrown into this...

What are the pros and cons of going to a top-tier university versus a local, or more mid-tier uni?

I've been wondering this question for the past couple weeks, as many of my friends who graduated didn't opt into the big and glorious universities such as UoFT or Waterloo, rather going to local universities or mid-tier universities (like uOttawa, Trent, uOttawa, Guelph, etc...). I know it isn't because of their grades either, as some were extremely intelligent. Does it matter for getting jobs and pay? Does it matter for further education? These are the questions that I hope will be answered.
