I mean this genuinely: I love both Aang and Korra. One of the things that I didn't like about TLoK (despite loving it overall) was barely getting to see Aang as an adult. I liked the movie, but I wanted more of a different vibe from Aang than just a preteen. I liked how Aang could be jocular, but also developed a sense of seriousness, as well as Korra's genuine admiration for him, from the beginning of the show with her constantly idolizing and wanting to live up to him, as well as later with her making a huge life decision of sacrificing herself not only for the balance of the world, but to make Aang's biggest dream come true.

This new movie to me felt a bit more like salt in the wound to both their char, that neither Aang (and now Sonam and even to a lesser degree Yangchen) would be able to see his people revived, but that Korra would never get guidance, reassurance, or really anything that only the Avatar can understand from Aang, as well as gratitude for the restoration of the Air Nation.

I get that Tenzin, Zuko, Iroh, Katara, and many others close to Aang have supported her as the person to carry on his legacy, including how working with Tenzin and his family to rebuild the Air Nation and sacrifice her life for them was something for which Aang would be beside himself with joy.

And agreed with that........... but it's still not the same as hearing it from another Avatar, the only other person who understands the importance of being a half human/spirit meant for creating peace throughout the world. It's great that everyone close to Aang tells Korra something, but it's something that she needs to hear from Aang himself, as he himself would remind her to be patient with and kind to herself.

Not just Aang, either. After how Roku died regretting being indecisive and leaving a mess for Aang to clean up, he would reassure Korra that she did something that restored the balance of the world in a way that he wished that he could have prevented from happening in the first place. They would both be ecstatic with joy to see Korra having brought back the Air Nation.

There are certain things thru which Korra went that only Aang, Kuruk, Yangchen, etc. will understand.

Just like only Roku (due to deeply regretting his indeceisiveness against Sozin and what it left for Aang) and the ones before him could understand how much pressure the Hundred-Year War was for Aang.

In addition, the Yangchen novels touch upon precisely the impossible pressure of being the Avatar, and (along with the Kyoshi novels) show her, Kuruk, and Kyoshi addressing how much fucking pressure this thankless job is and how it's quite a curse, not always a blessing like everyone thinks that it is.

And something that I loved about both Aang by his adulthood and Korra by the end of her series is that their mindsets shifted from wanting to avoid the responsibility of being the Avatar (or in Korra's course, letting it define her entire identity, then later understandably in Season 4 wanting to avoid it for a while) to embracing it regardless of what they chose, anyway.

I found it really bad for Korra's otherwise great arc and Aang's character to just strip away her connection to the past lives, especially when we'd just gotten introduced to Wan. Thoughts on this?

Why didn't Roku choose to appear young and attractive like other Avatars who lived **at least** as long? Is he stupid?

Regardless of the back pains later, how she compares to Bumi, or this being by surprise, this was objectively one of the most impressive fight scenes across both series for **everyone**

Thinking about how insanely overpowered Kuvira's army was, those giant mecha tanks were insanely overpowered with spirit energy, and I don't think that anyone outside of an Avatar in the Avatar State ('Light' or 'Dark' Avatar able to bend spirit energy) could've accomplished this head-on, anyway.

Maybe Bumi if he was quick to make the ground quicksand or Pakku (who also aged like a GoAT) in either Pole, but even then, if they blasted even once, then almost anyone in the show would've been done.

For Toph at to do this so quickly and precisely and manage not to hit a single person who she was saving as collateral damage in the process was still amazingly impressive for anyone at any age, but especially grandma Toph, regardless of how she compares to Bumi. If anything, then Toph still aged like a fine wine, but Bumi just did so as an even much finer wine at a much older age.

Still one of the most impressive fight scenes across both series regardless of age, but Toph being in her mid 80s makes it even more so.

Man, after this movie, now I hope even more that one day, they'll be able to reunite.

Aang, Sonam, and even Yangchen........ I hope that one day, Korra will be able to reconnect with them and see how proud of and thankful they'd be for her, and they get to express that to her in full, hug her, and honestly exactly what Korra went through to ensure their prosperity, largely out of her reverence for Aang especially.

The amount of times that I accidentally briefly mistook my SWT girl for my other SWT girl in this movie.......

Lmao at brief moments, I was like 'wait they're foreshadowing Korra? Oh wait no, that's just Katara.'

Everybody be talking about Sokka's absent sexism, but let's talk about how he ruined this scene with one unnecessary line 😑

I actually liked Sokka a lot in this live action version lmao but why did he have to announce what we were just about to see? 😑

I really just realized last night that these two images of the Avatar Spirit were connected all the way back😭💀

I thought of when the Avatar Spirit (not Raava, of course) was mentioned in the original to tie it all together, and Katara explicitly mentions it way back in Season 1 in the third or so episode, Roku implies it in The Avatar State (the connection of the past glow can only be that), and Guru Pathik again says it explicitly in Season 2, with Aang then viewing his spirit on a cosmic scale 😂

Why do the Fire and Water Avatars tend to have it so rough? 😭

  • Roku died on a volcano trying to stop the beginning of the Hundred-Year War for a kid to clean up 😭
  • Korra got poisoned to protect a revived nation and died in an apocalyptic fashion, with the world bitter with her 😭
  • Szeto garnered a decent rep, but was known already by Yangchen's and now we know definitely by Roku's time to have prioritized the FN to the point where the world did not trust FN officials, including even Roku to be a responsible Avatar in the beginning 😭
  • Kuruk's entire life was remembered slanderously, with his real story buried deep in the trenches 😤
  • Wan died frail, old, and feeling that he'd failed (and accidentally releasing Vaatu) 😭

Are there any things that you guys would improve about TLoK?

I'm (obviously) a huge fan, but it's also obvious that the series unfortunately did not get the budget that it deserved, leading to choppy moments in the writing. I also need to say that I loved Korra as a character, but really found the writers to have fucked her over quite a bit. What I would improve:

  • Season 1 was cool, but we really didn't need it.
  • If she's starting out 17, then maybe make her start with only water and earth (since the Avatar is not supposed to even start practicing the others until 16), and I'd prefer fire to be her tough element.
  • What the fuck were Tenzin and Tonraq thinking, locking up and sheltering the goddamn Avatar in her home like that? Limiting her practical exposure to the world and severely stunting her spiritual and personal growth until she got the culture shock. This was legit the person who would one day become the world's steward, and Tenzin's kids were allowed more freedom than she was? Hell no.
  • Still mixed on the Avatar spirit origin story.
  • I actually liked the idea of two Avatars (and a dark one to always challenge her, not just to be "evil," but to challenge the very Avatar itself), preferably also with all four elements, and starting at the opposite element of the Avatar (i.e. Aang's Dark Avatar starts with Earth, Korra's Fire, etc).
    • However, this was still close since Unalaq was from the opposite of Korra's home.
      • Even Season 1 was ironically close, with those villains also being from Korra's home and Noatak legit starting with a story of the spirits giving him the ability to remove bending. Somehow blending that and Season 2 might've been awesome, since we already had Korra's opposite home and gender, a spirit enhanced story, and somebody challenging the Avatar as the role of the balancekeeper.
      • The past lives 😭 I would again have loved a Dark Avatar if they allowed Korra to keep her past lives 😭
  • Maybe move to another company than Paramount given what the creators keep doing to the series 😭

How would Toph narrate the movie lore to Korra?

My version:

Korra: "Oh oh oh! I heard that you guys found another frozen airbender sometime with spiritual abilities! That must've been phenomenal!

Toph: "Oh yeah! We met this hot hunk of an airbender who had more of a backbone than the Avatar. I was the only to forgive him after he nearly got killed us, then he nearly killed us again, and the Avatar got all sappy. Wow! What a day!"

Damn fucking straight...... and in the future, he'd better listen to her.

Aang and Korra are genuinely both so lucky for Katara's wisdom and friendship.

Why do so many fans call the movie a "mischaracterization" when stuff like this goes back all the way to the original?

I saw a ridiculous amount of heavily upvoted comments page in the ATLA subreddit genuinely claiming that Aang had never reacted the way that he did about his culture in the show...............

Could Korra have found out more about Unalaq's intentions if she'd sought out Aang or any other past lives?

I want to preface by saying that I love Korra and hate the Korra bashing. I find it pretty insane how so much of the fandom blames her for severing her connection to the past lives as if she actually chose that and did not fight with every fabric of her soul to prevent that at a time when the writers decided that the Avatar Spirit was at its weakest for some reason.

I also can't wrap my head around how much shit she gets for trusting her only family member who helped her advance spiritually (and quickly at that) and didn't choose to keep her sheltered her entire life (a genuinely catastrophic, detrimental decision for the Avatar), then lie to her about it being Aang's idea. Once she found out Unalaq's true intentions, she apologized to Tenzin, Tonraq, and the rest. But he was the only one who exposed her at the time, and as far as she knew, the only family member keeping it real with her.

But what I can say about this is that once she found out that Tenzin and Tonraq had lied to her about sheltering her as Aang's idea, why didn't she talk to Aang about it? In fact, why didn't she talk to Aang about that as soon as she could finally connect?

And for anyone who claims that she didn't heed the advice of or respect her past lives, in all her interactions with Aang, she was genuinely hungry for new knowledge and very respectful of him and her legacy, striving to live up to it and carry on what she could for him.

But honestly speaking: could more conversations with Aang have prevented her from being manipulated by Unalaq into opening the Southern Spirit Portal?

Ace (One Piece) manga version versus Venom (Spiderman) comic version

Twist: the fight takes place by the beach so that they both have wildcard access to each other's vulnerabilities. Ace is effectively made of something that can destroy Venom and is generally a lot faster and stronger. Venom, though, gets an environmental advantage here to see how that goes. Who will win this?

Both bloodlusted.

Yangchen/Kuruk opinion flip thread

Honest question here: why did most of the fandom do a complete 180 on Yangchen after the Kyoshi novels revealed the tragic secrets of Kuruk's life? The fandom went from putting her on a pedestal (like the world during Kuruk's and Kyoshi's times and presumably after) to just hating her and calling her selfish, saying that she was now a horrible Avatar, etc.

But the thing is that what that really reveals was that Kuruk was a lot more nuanced than the 'lazy' Avatar that we as a fandom had once taken away. He continued that image to Kyoshi, Aang, and his other successors, but when he talked to Aang, he was still honest that he'd lost his wife to a spirit that he was hunting but didn't want to get into the nitty gritty of it.

What I don't understand is: did people not understand the Yangchen novels? And how much she did to also ensure spiritual balance and appease the spirits? Hell, we can look at the comics with General Old Iron.

Even Kuruk told Kyoshi that it was humans who constantly provoked the spirits and broke treaties established with them (including Yangchen's with General Old Iron).

Did the fandom also not understand the Yangchen novels and how they touched upon how impossibly hard and insane with pressure it was for one person to maintain balance in the world? Yangchen's novels highlights this multiple times, and even how nothing that she or her past lives did was ever enough to appease the world, nor would be for her successors.

I feel bad for Kuruk, because he did have to fix Yangchen's mistakes of not doing enough for the spirits, but if she had, then people would complain that she neglected the humans......... but though Yangchen owned that as her mistake and felt deeply guilty, was it even really her or the people of her time who set off the spirits like that?

Does anyone actually like the idea of two Avatars and want Korra to get her connection to her past lives back?

I loved the show and fact that we got to meet the first Avatar, but really hated how we only briefly got to see him before they ripped him away from us (and Korra). I thought that Unalaq was the flattest villain, but I honestly thought that he (or someone better) could have been a genuine opposite Avatar to keep Korra (and the Avatar in general) in balance.

It would even have been cool to discover a second Avatar that did exist in the world and lived more with the Spirits, as the opposite/foil Avatar. I also found it great that for Korra's case, her Dark Avatar was in the opposite of her own home, and an opposite element Dark Avatar that lives in the Spirit World, but interacts for both, sounds cool.

Instead of a generic bad guy (like Unalaq became 😑), I would've preferred a Dark Avatar of the opposite element (or Pole, as in Korra's case) to be, indeed, the half-spirit-half-human harbinger of chaos: someone to disrupt the harmony and flow of things when necessary, and challenge the Avatar constantly.

Not a generic bad guy (which Vaatu and Unalaq unfortunately became), but genuine opposite to the Avatar.

Previous Avatar examples: in Kyoshi's case, she dealt with a spirit-infused Yun, and instead having someone like Tagah (from the new movie) during her time to sow more discord between the spirits and humans, and disrupt the world when it was too static, would've been a great foil to her.

Or with Wan starting as the first Avatar, somewhere in the Pole, a Water Avatar representative of what we saw with Vaatu: bringing disruption and chaos to humans and spirits, messing with the balance of the world, and constantly challenging Wan and his principles.

Also, any other fans wanting Korra to get her connection to the past lives back? I really wanted to see her connect more with Aang, Roku, Kyoshi, and especially Kuruk and Wan 😭
