Taking or Retaking Multivariable Calculus

Hello. I am a rising freshman and am curious about laterally transferring schools due to my school's small(er) engineering program. I am currently taking a summer semester multivariable calculus class at a community college, and had a few questions regarding how I should proceed in terms of using this credit if I were to transfer.

1.) How big of a difference would it be to the admissions committee (say at Stanford or MIT) if I were to retake multi vs. if I would use this credit and move onto linear algebra/ differential equations? I only ask because I am worried that the summer semester didnt go as in depth, compared to a regular semester of calculus.

2.) If I wanted to transfer into a school like MIT, that has prerequisites, would they accept this multi credit as a completed prerequisite? I was going to take more college math in my current university, but the MIT transfer website specifies calculus.

All advice appreciated

Moving down in draw weight

Hello, I started shooting a little over a month and a half ago and have been going 4/5 days a week since. I recently bought a bow at a club and was convinced to start at a 20-pound draw weight since I would waste money on 18 pounds, as I would outgrow it fast. I've shot 20 yards with this bow 3 times already, and I've been noticing noticeable differences in muscle fatigue, poor form, shoulder crepitus, etc, that I wasn't experiencing with my less draw-weight-heavy club bow.

Right now, my form is inconsistent, and I'm not fully drawing back. Despite my growing love for archery, I really do not feel comfortable touching a bow until I can move its weight comfortably. I don't feel like im creating good habits in terms of form. So...

  1. Should I go back to shooting 18 lbs? Or should I try to train it out with the 20 lbs?
  2. How long would it take me to move from 18 to 20 given my shooting frequency? I am an average young adult female. I am moving to college in 3 weeks, so if it's within that timeframe, I can just use the clubs' bows until then. If it takes longer, should I just get another pair of limbs?

How to I stop moving my head when I’m coming to anchor???

Title!! Underchin, specifically. I keep recording myself shooting and I keep doing this. Are there exercises that can train me to stop doing this? Is this a mental thing? Help!

Non-student research positions

Hello! I had a questions about non-MIT student research positions.

So I applied to MIT and got rejected (😒), but I only really applied because there is this one professor who conducts research on a disease I have and, surprise surprise, I want to study in that field. I attend the same school that the professor got their PhD at and taught at for ~20 years prior to moving to MIT.

I know it’s a stupid question because I’m going to email them regardless, but is this a worthy shot to ask to work with them over a break? Is it common for non-students to get research positions?

Solidcore in college

Hi guys!

I’m starting college in the fall and I was wondering how hard it is to get into classes at college towns/ how awkward it is running into people you know?

For reference, I’ve been spoiled by the fact that I live in NYC, and I’ve been able to book at any location here with minimal issues. It gets a little annoying since I don’t always get the time slots I want but it’s whatever.

So, for those in this subreddit who attend college in a (relatively)small college town, how is it getting into classes? Is it awkward seeing people you know in your classes? I’m gonna be in Providence, RI, which has like one location (I think) and I’m getting nervy!

Let me know! Also drop some advice on getting into classes if you are in an area that has limited locations

STEP/TWTP as a White Person?

Hi! Please do not come for me for this, I’m honestly just curious about what to do.

I am interested in joining STEP for the summer, which I just found out also means that I should join TWTP. I found no issue with this, as I honestly thought that discussing social issues and creating an inclusive community was integral for the STEP program and experience.

Honestly my only question was if participating in such programs would be socially frowned upon? I really was looking forward to participating in STEP, and I am also intrigued by TWTP as Im FG with a severe disability that has already made me a disfavorable candidate for multiple fields (including engineering) so discussing representation of sex, gender, race, social class, etc is something that I already do, and look forward to doing more.

I only ask because I’ve seen some posts online where people note that these spaces are for POC/FGLI, and I respect that but the website for STEP also notes that it seeks to represent disabled populations as well?

Please let me know!

Hiya, I’m a incoming freshman and I received a handwritten postcard from a senior who was also from my city. Anyone else get one of these? Is this a thing?
