I really need opinions and suggestions from experienced VLSI engineers here/ anyone who can guide me.
My situation is this: I have completed my first year of M.Tech, and placements will start in August. My college has an excellent placement record—around 90% of students get placed, with a median package of approximately ₹28 LPA.
At the same time, I have secured a PSU job through GATE. After all deductions, the in-hand salary would be around ₹80,000 per month. The job can be anywhere in India, but it offers a relatively relaxed work-life balance and good job security. With the implementation of the 4th Pay Revision, the salary is expected to increase to around ₹95,000–₹1,25,000 per month in hand.
What concerns me is the long-term impact of AI on the VLSI industry, as well as the uncertainty in the private job market. While VLSI currently offers excellent compensation and growth opportunities, there is always the possibility of market downturns, layoffs, or technological disruptions.
Given these factors, I'm genuinely confused about which path to choose.
If you were in my position, would you choose the PSU role or take your chances with VLSI placements? More importantly, what factors would support your decision?
I would really appreciate insights from professionals who have experience in the semiconductor/VLSI industry.
