Thriend or Faux extension: get a quick glimpse into others' posting history and more!

Hey y'all,

I have created a Chrome extension for Threads (NOT endorsed by or affiliated with Meta!) that creates "cards" to help you better understand your fellow community members and assess whether to engage with them. You can generate a card like the one below by hovering over anyone's profile name and clicking "ANALYZE".

https://preview.redd.it/dn5kwrimiabh1.png?width=405&format=png&auto=webp&s=bc5c3179869a563d398c905d4e5eb4a41a74690d

I'm still looking for testers! If you're interested, please visit ThriendOrFaux.com and fill out the quick form linked from there.

IMPORTANT CAVEAT: Because this extension relies on an LLM (Claude) to read and analyze folks' posting history, it requires you to input an Anthropic API key. While the actual lookups cost just ~1/3rd of a cent each, the minimum $ deposit for an Anthropic API account is $5.

To be clear, I do not profit from this in any way, and in fact spent a lot of money and time creating this extension, and of course do not see anyones keys (see the full privacy policy)

---

I'm also happy to get your feedback here on the card elements, even if you're not interested in testing!

My core goals with the extension:

  1. Make folks' experience on Threads more pleasant by helping them assess who to interact with.
  2. Nudge people to improve their behavior on Threads (when they see their own card and others' cards), prioritizing kindness over snark, initial trust over cynicism, etc.

Play a random album in your YTM library -- would that interest you?

I've given all my money to Anthropic to have Claude help me build a Chrome extension that one-click selects and then plays a random album from your YTM library.

Bonus: I've also trying to add some little fun bits so I can...

  • Pick a random album within a narrow genre set (e.g., pop, jazz, classical...)
  • Roll a six-sided dice and select from 6 randomly selected albums across genres :)

I kicked this off as a personal passion project because I've wanted a break from whiplash when listening to my music library (especially with cast albums!)... and also kinda wanted getting back to thoughtfully, patiently enjoying full albums the way artists intended.

But maybe this is of interest to others?

If so, I'll consider taking the extra time to submit this to Google for Chrome Webstore review and such.

Let me know in the comments here if this is something you'd find useful and enjoyable :-)

---

OTHER NOTES:

  • This'll only work on Chrome/Chromium browsers, and not on mobile
  • It's mildly brittle. The core functionality could break pending Google-side changes, and the extra genre bit depends on Apple's continued free-lookups-generosity. And even that already has limitations; they do throttle by IP and sometimes entirely block traffic from users using that thing we cannot mention in this sub.
  • For these and other reasons, I'd plan on releasing this extension as KindnessWare: if you love it, let me know and optionally considering making a donation to a good cause (maybe even an arts-related one!).

PSA: Autopay now available for [push] mortgage payments

(at least for my mortgage servicer, Chase)

Just set it up on the web under "HOME" (https://www.bilt.com/account/home) and it's now correctly showing a payment pending in 3 days (since I had set it to pay on the 24th of each month).

Note that -- per a notice on the setup page -- payments take 3 business days to process (e.g., in my case, payments aren't due 'til the first of the month).

And yes, it does show that I'll use Bilt Cash to earn Bilt Points on these payments.

Weirdest bug ever: Can't access group chat on Atlas

I created a group chat on the iOS app.

I can access it there or via ChatGPT on the web on Chrome, but... when I try to access it on ChatGPT on Atlas, I get an "Application error" or "Could not load" consistently (even after restarting Atlas).

Spitfire no longer supports NKS

After I updated my Komplete Kontrol software and found that both BBC Symphony Orchestra and Eric Whitacre Choir are now inaccessible in the app, I reached out to Spitfire technical support and learned that:

"We no longer support NKS functionality as of the Komplete Kontrol 3.0.0 update."

Wow. Did I miss an announcement somewhere? Amidst the zillions of vacuous marketing emails they send, could they not have sent a brief update to existing customers of this fairly substantial change? That would have saved me many hours of futile troubleshooting.

Really disappointing.

I see: "ChatGPT needs additional access to Google Drive

Your current connection does not include the required permissions."

However, when I click on Continue, I get an elongated pill-shaped empty popover with no text or buttons to push.

This happens both on Atlas and on Chrome.

I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting Google Drive from Settings, but this doesn't help.
