W2 vs 1099

Hello,

I’m reaching a point where I’m getting sick of my current employer and I’m on the brink of throwing my resignation letter for reasons that are irrelevant here. The thing is my current employer gives me some flexibility and I want to keep that.

One of my old employers who I still have a very good relationship with told me I can go back anytime, now after years of experience I have gained I think I can go back and apply for the opening they have ( exactly my job ) but I would like to ask for a remote 1099 instead of a W-2.

I understand the downside of a 1099 for me, but I realize that a remote 1099 might be a big ask for them, is there anything for them in it ? Would they see this ask possible in any way ?

Cmv: “Consultant” is the most overused job title ever; and most of them don’t even know what they’re doing. Cmv

CMV: Why is it every time I meet a “consultant” and I ask them what do they do I get the most generic AI generated response ever. It’s like it’s either a secret; they themselves don’t even know; or maybe they have a terrible bad pitch. Every response feels like a bunch of fancy meaningless words glued together. And now with AI it’s 10X worse… just spam AI on everything. I see people graduted last semester getting SENIOR consulting jobs …. Like what the hell do you know in life to be a consultant in anything, let alone SENIOR

Average conversation with a consultant;

-Hi; what do you do for a living?
- I’m a consultant.
-Niiice; consultant in what ?
- I help companies to develop a comprehensive strategy and workplan to optimize their resources efficiently using AI
- huh???

EDIT: I see alot of people here who are consultants engineers and as an architect I respect that. Cause in my field we deal with this type of people every day. Any of these engineers if you asked them about theor job you can easily understand what they do, This is NOT the type of consultants I’m talking about.

A question to the multi-family residential architects here

As a fellow architect; I would like to know what goes inside the head of the designer who design this type of apartments, seriously.

Everywhere and anywhere in the country it’s the same fucking layout. Entry-kitchen-living and then the bedrooms plug in on the sides. Every single “luxurious” apartment is designed with fancy kitchen but no where to set and eat, no area to have a dining table even for two chairs. Am I supposed to sit next to my wife on this island after a long day like we’re hooking up in some bar ?

I just want to find a normal apartment for normal people where I can have a dining table, like a normal functioning family who have dinner together.

The stupid part is when you tour these “luxurious” apartments you can see sooo much wasted space here and there in unpropotionally big closet or bathroom or unreasonably deep island.

You pay 3500 for 2b2b but you can’t have people over to have a cup of tea… it’s ridiculous

Hiring a software engineer for code review

As the title says; have you guys done it before launch?

How much does it typically cost ?

My SaaS is a multi tenant platform; each tenant with have their own members and their own database, but all tenants share another global database, and I charge per user/month.

I want a review to give me a piece of mind regarding two main things; security and stability with up to a 1000 users ( I’m not expecting more than that anytime soon )

Any experience with such service and how much does it cost ?

Is my water pump dying ?

I have some coolant leak on my 2019 b46.
I still haven’t figure out the leak source but I’ve been topping off my coolant every week now for about 200ml ( ~7 oz ) every time.

I opened my water reservoir and I saw that the return line is barely running, is this a sign that the pump is not operating properly?

Smoke test and foubd the leak; I guess

BMW X3 sDrive30i.

Recently noticed some decreased fuel economy and the car felt weaker.

I did smoke test from two different locations:
1- after the throttle body; found no leak.

2- after the air filter and before the turbo inlet; and found a substantial leak from where the intake pipe connects to the turbo inlet. Can I say I found the leak and this is the cause ?

Can my employer claim ownership of a SaaS I built on my own time?

Location: I'm in Texas, and the HQ are in Missouri

I work as an architect for a company I’ll call “ABC.” Over the past year, on my own personal time and equipment, I’ve been developing a SaaS/web platform related to data management for building speciality equipment and technical facilities.

The platform is not based on copying ABC’s codebase (they don’t have one), but obviously my industry knowledge comes from working in this field professionally. The software is being built entirely on my own hardware/accounts outside work hours.

I recently re-read an employment agreement I signed and now I’m concerned about how broad the IP/invention assignment language is.

Some relevant language includes:

- I cannot “engage in any other business enterprise” during employment.

- “Inventions” include software, systems, algorithms, methods, etc. related to any “present or prospective business” of ABC

- I must disclose inventions conceived during employment, even if created outside work hours and without company resources

- The agreement says inventions are assigned to the employer.

Right now, the product is still mostly at architecture, prototyping, and development phase.

My question is simple; does my employer have any ownership rights over this SaaS ?
I'm fully aware that I will NOT be deploying it and monetize it during my employement. But if I left and then started selling it, will I be in any legal trouble ?

I know I ultimately need to speak to an attorney licensed in the relevant state(s), but I’d appreciate practical insight from employment/IP attorneys or founders who’ve dealt with similar agreements.

Edit: what I built is not a “competing” tool. What I did is like someone working at a restaurant and they saw that chopping veggies by had is just time consuming ( it’s something all restaurants do ) so he invents an automatic chopping machine.
And he starts selling it to restaurants to help them reduce their labor.

Power loss issue

Hello,

2019 BMW X3 sDrive30i
After changing the valve cover, and the spark plugs, I felt like the car lost some serious power.
I checked the MPG and yes, it dropped from 25 to 21.6.

During the vavle cover removal I obviously had to remove the fuel injectors ( replaced the seals ) and also when I looked inside the engine I found some oil … looks like it got there during the valve cover replacement.

Turned on the car and white snoke came out of the exhaust for the first time ever ( due to oil puddling in the cylinders) then it disappeared.

How can I tackle this power loss issue?

Does my employer have a right in a tool I created?

Hello,

I’m working on a tool and I’m about to introduce it to my boss, and the entire firm.

The tool is VERY useful in our industry; it’s very niche and it cuts the labor on a specific type of tasks by at least 60-70%, since it addresses a time consuming and labor intensive process

What they currently have is a conventional Excell spreadsheet ( nothing new, all companies in this market does it this way) I made something inspired by it but as a website + app and online database and the entire thing is just different in looks and the way it works.

I worked on it on my free time; on my personal machine and used absolutely nothing of my company resources. Just my experience and endless nights of working.

My plan is to commercialize it, but I’m planning to give it to my employer first to make them my first “client” then I will sell it.

My question: does my employer have any legal rights over this ? Does the fact that I worked on it during my employment at their company give them any rights? I don’t care if I had to leave them.

Thanks!
