Who do we think Laura Linney could be playing in Lanterns?

The common theory seems to be that she’s playing none other than Carol Ferris; with Hal being much older in this series, it would make sense if Carol showed up or was mentioned in some way given her history with Hal. Her knowledge of Hal being a Green Lantern could explain her conversation with John in the trailer and dryly encouraging him to be better than Hal as a Lantern.

But of course there’s any number of possibilities. Perhaps she’s a lesser known character from the comics or a wholly original character. Any thoughts?

Sarah Michelle Gellar as Veronica Cale

With Matthew Lillard having been cast in Man of Tomorrow, I think it would be awesome to see James Gunn and co. cast more of the actors from the live-action Scooby-Doo movies (which he wrote) in the DCU.

In particular, Sarah Michelle Gellar would make a great pick for one of Wonder Woman’s top villains from the comics: Veronica Cale. Cale is an intelligent, cunning, and duplicitous woman who’s orchestrated a number of schemes and threats against Wonder Woman time and time again out of sheer hatred for the hero and what Cale considers to be her flawed representation of feminism.

From her excellent performances in Cruel Intentions and most recently Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, Gellar has shown that she can play a clever, manipulative and ruthless (yet no less entertaining) villain with little regard for others with ease, and she could no doubt bring that same energy in spades to Cale.

Any thoughts?

A theory I have on how a version of The Elite (and not The Authority) can play into the ongoing Salvation storyline (and who should be on the team).

So going by Gunn’s recent comments, The Authority film isn’t happening anytime soon (if at all). And while this is disappointing for a lot of us that wanted to see that entire team (including The Engineer) assembled onscreen, that doesn’t mean that a group of violent anti-heroes inspired by The Authority can’t show up instead. I’m talking of course about The Elite.

Now we’re not entirely sure how the Salvation storyline is gonna play out within certain projects, and the same goes for Man of Tomorrow. But let’s say that if that storyline is resolved in some way during the events of that film then we could see a majority (if not all) of the metahumans/vigilantes that A.R.G.U.S. captured being freed/rescued and brought back to Earth.

And in a third Superman film that loosely adapts “What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way?”/Superman vs. The Elite, we could see that several of those metahumans/vigilantes want revenge on A.R.G.U.S. and the government for having them imprisoned. This leads to the formation of The Elite, consisting of:

  • Manchester Black, their leader
  • The Engineer, who could want to turn over a new leaf after being used by Lex
  • Hawkgirl, who was likely sent to Salvation because of her actions in Superman
  • Black Spider, who in the comics has often violently toed the line between vigilante and outright supervillain
  • Volcana, who in the DCAU was introduced as a metahuman that was experimented on by the government and harbors resentment for them

The Elite would go after heads of state, government officials, and organizations like A.R.G.U.S. and kill their members out of revenge by whatever means necessary, bringing Superman into the conflict. Superman could try to reason with them and insist that while he understands their feelings that revenge and violence aren’t the answer. They’d butt heads and we’d eventually get Superman giving Manchester Black and the others his iconic “Dreams save us….” speech.

The events of this film could convince Clark that more heroes need to come together in a more civilized way that establishes a mutual respect and understanding with world governments, which would then lead to the formation of the Justice League.

And if there’s an eventual loose adaptation of Superman and The Authority/The Warworld Saga, then those members of The Elite could team up with Superman.

Obviously Gunn and co. probably have their own unique ideas in mind, but was curious to hear everyone’s thoughts on this theory.

Given Gunn’s comments about not being a huge fan of time travel, does that mean that we probably won’t see the Legion of Super-Heroes in the DCU entirely or not necessarily?

We’re (hopefully) getting the Booster Gold series, and Booster being a time traveler will probably play into the story but the mechanics of time travel or the future setting in general probably won’t get a lot of focus.

But with the Legion, time travel and the future setting in general play a big role, and those aspects of the team and their stories in general could be somewhat complicated based on how Gunn and co. are mapping out the general timeline of the DCU.

Besides the reference to Matter-Eater Lad from Peacemaker, does that mean that a LoSH project won’t happen in the DCU, whether it’s from Gunn or another writer/director? Or could the team be altered in a way that better aligns with the DCU’s timeline (like being from another pocket universe instead of the future)?

Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts.

Since it looks like we may not be getting The Authority in the DCU, I thought it could be interesting to cast a version of The Elite instead to fill a similar role in another Superman film that’s inspired by “What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way?”/Superman vs. The Elite.

Depending on how the Salvation plot is handled in Man of Tomorrow, a number of freed metahumans/vigilantes could want revenge on the government for having them imprisoned, resulting in the formation of The Elite. The Elite would go after heads of state (in addition to supervillains) and kill them by whatever means necessary, bringing Superman into the conflict. And down the line, there could be a loose adaptation of Superman and The Authority/The Warworld Saga where some of these characters team up with Superman.

But anyway, here’s the characters I felt would best fit with The Elite’s methods and who should play them.

Matt Smith (older pick) or George MacKay (younger pick) as Manchester Black (the usual leader)

Maria Gabriela de Faria as Angela Spica/The Engineer (already present)

Neil Brown Jr. as Eric Needham/Black Spider

Carmela Zumbado as Claire Selton/Volcana

Any thoughts?

A solo project for The Rogues has been rumored about for a while and they would be perfect for a film or series in the heist genre along the lines of Ocean’s 11 or The Italian Job. Throw in Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang also (since he could be alive in the DCU’s continuity) and it could be amazing.

Any other villains who could thrive in their own non-horror solo project?

We know that The Engineer’s gonna be back in Man of Tomorrow, though how big a role she’ll play isn’t known just yet. She could be controlled by Brainiac, or want to redeem herself after being manipulated by Lex, etc.. But from there, her future is unclear.

Regarding the possibility of other WildStorm characters making their DCU debuts, that’s also unclear. Not that there haven’t been some exceptions here and there, but those characters/teams have often struggled to co-exist in the DC Universe and maybe that’s what’s happening in the DCU also.

I can see how they work best in their own universe since they’re largely a reaction to/subversion of the tropes and archetypes we’re familiar with from the DC Universe. Midnighter’s their Batman, Apollo’s one of their many Superman archetypes, Gen 13’s their Teen Titans, The Authority’s their Justice League, etc.. Heck, one of the in-universe bars that the WS heroes often hang at is called Clark’s, whose owner looks and dresses like Clark Kent. And trying to force those characters into the same world as the characters that they’ve taken inspiration from could feel like forcing Austin Powers into the same world as James Bond for example.

Anything’s possible, but if it becomes too complicated then maybe The Authority and the other WS folk could work best in their own Elseworlds universe. A DCAU-style animated universe for those characters that goes fully R-rated and possibly draws the same kind of attention that Invincible’s gotten has a shot at working.

What’s everyone else’s take on these points? Just curious and interested in hearing different opinions.

Yes, this sounds insanely bizarre but here’s why I think this could be great: Pattinson’s proven how incredible he is at creating different voices, from his unrecognizable work as The Heron in The Boy and the Heron to playing Mickey Barnes and his numerous other clones in Mickey 17.

I feel like he’d be able to create a distinct voice and attitude for Conker that could be both reminiscent of Chris Seavor’s performance while adding his own eccentric spin on it.

Any thoughts? Please keep your comments respectful on this one preferably.
