Each time you research Future Tech: Social Science one of your countries gets a claim on a border region it doesn't yet have a claim on. The cost increases, so ideally you want to use as few as possible.

I found you can get all of the Americas in one country by creating the South American Union then flipping to Gran Colombia. Greater North America extends down through Panama, so a single roll of the dice can give you a claim on Bogota, allowing you to annex all of South America.

Are there any other tricks out there that let you merge mega-countries without daisy-chaining claims?
