Kershaw 1620 Scallion

Picked it up in a thrift store baggie purchase. Was about to toss it but threw it on the bench and tore it apart. This knife has history lol.

Researched, discovered what it was (newish to knives) and spent some time polishing up and fixing everything I could. It’s seen some things.

Actually works like a dream now - quite surprisingly it’s a nice feeling knife.

Except for the blade. The blade has lived a life of YOLO and getting things done. From what I can tell the steel is 420HC.

If I wanted to re-profile the tip into a slight reverse tanto-ish end - my best option of pool available means to do so? I have the original work sharp belt sander from 10-12 years ago, but would need to order belts, a dremel and would need bits, access to concrete of all grits and a 100 grit diamond lansky stone. Looking to take off maybe 1-1.5mm straight into the tip edge x 6-8mm wide.

Hapstone vs KME

Hapstone RS Ultra Knife Sharpener doesn't come with stones. What would the best option be for budget, but good, stones?

Is it that much better to spend more $ over the KME Deluxe set, before you even add stones?

Knife for FIL with arthritis

Looking for a small OAL of 6" or so for a knife for my FIL. Arthritic, twisted fingers. Spent 15 seconds watching him try to open the William Henry we got him a decade or so ago at Moter's Day and it was painful to watch.

Want to help him out. Looking for small, true pocket carry, not pocket clip, easier opening for him, and easier to hold. Thanks.

I know everyone has their own favorites. If I upgrade it will most likely be to the KME Precision Deluxe, or random mishmash of KME, with the 4" stones. That, coupled with the Gritomatic holder gives me a double upgrade and the stones can be used on the Lansky as well.

My question(s) is - are the better stones really worth it over Lansky stones? Is the clamping that much better?

Ceramic tweezers

Helping my wife sort things, cut leather, etc. the edge didn’t last long. She had a pair of ceramic tweezers - it worked great.

Another tip question - fixed angle. No, not why does it get wider. 😎

Pic is best I could do.

I know I should leave well enough alone. Hard to see but the tip here is slightly smaller than the rest. If I did want to fix the width, with a Lansky, how would you recommend I do it?

Recently received a Tenable Loki fixed blade with D2. I have quite a few D2 blades, but this one...

I'm using a Lansky, so stones aren't the best but I've been able to get every other blade to hair whittling sharp and polished if I wanted (not mirrored). This blade forms a wire burr very easy so light strokes, alternating with some edge trailing strokes and it takes an amazing edge to 1,000 grit, and even at 1600 grit (estimated) on the hard black Arkansas stone and will start to polish

When you hit it with the 2000, regardless of leading or trailing, with feathery light weight of the stone only strokes, it will polish but the apex seems to degrade. Under the loupe it looks good though. No burr.

Every stone change is checked and angles are always matched and spot on. I dropped it back to 600 grit last night and when I hit 2000, same thing.

Any thoughts? My Benchmade in D2 sharpens 20x easier than this one.

Sitting and talking with the wife, a cup of strong coffee and the dinosaur, I mean puppy, enjoying the sun while I work on this polish.

I can think of worse ways to spend a Sunday morning.

Bought a Boker Plus Nessmi Pro in black last year. After it came in, it sat in the box after initial opening. Life took over. I loved the blade shape and size for what I had in mind, and have never had issues with Boker.

Fast forward to a last month and I pulled it out to put my edge on it. The black coating on the full tang is a joke. From resting on a wooden desk, 90% of the time on a towel or silicon work mat, it flaked off. Not scratched or rubbed off. Flaked off. The entire back end of the knife is bald, and that isn't even where it was touching the desk.

The knife has never been used, has only been sharpened and looks like this now. Multiple emails to Boker customer service and many more to Boker warranty over the past weeks.

Not a single response.

That will be my last Boker knife purchase ever.

Finally found a thrift store with folders in a ziplock for practice blades. Not a great haul, but not terrible I guess.

These are the ones with enough blade left to practice on.

Best I can tell, top to bottom:
Left row:
Old timer 3 blade, about 100mm long.
Sabre folding something - nice sheath labeled Western
Barlow, "Curtis" screened on scales
?? Junk
Kershaw something, Snap-On on scales. Blade was used as prybar and reprofiled aggressively into - something lol

Middle row: Rigid USA
Imperial Ireland Stainless something
Case 2159 LSSP, engraved for 60th anniversary of Napa Echlin.

Right row
Sharp Knives something - I received one of these as a kid in the early 80's - cool
X2, repeat of above blade is ground to a sliver
junk
SAK Standard (predecessor to the Spartan - no toothpick/tweezers)

There were 8 or 9 more knives in there, all garbage for the most part.

I've been using a Lansky system for 30 years and have grown used to its quirks. However, the padded clamp is not big enough for some knives and I have never had luck taping blades/clamp.

No matter what I do, unless I crank down on the clamp (and I have broken one this way) there is always wiggle. Enough wiggle to bother me. I've used blue painters tape, electrical tape, masking tape, even bought some "rubber" tape. So far everything slips/wriggles.

Suggestions?

Had to repost due to being caffeine deprived. Severely.

Bought an Ontario Knife Company Epoch D2 - the blade shape spoke to me.

When it came in, the blade grind was horrible. See pic 1 (full blade as shipped, factory edge).

Knife center was great and said I could return/replace or keep with a discount. Discount was good enough that I kept it and went to clean up the edge last night. Fixed angle sharpener.

Thinking that this is a blade grind/geometry issue at this point. See pic 2 (close up after initial sharpening).

Thoughts? Just keep going? I'd like the edge to be even, but the knife is now HWS and it's a beater for me so not that worried about it, just like learning.
