This was one of my favorite lines from the book. I just came across someone on another subreddit who created a website that maps everything in the known universe. It’s pretty amazing to play with.

For many years I have been teaching myself Korean first with the Drops app for vocabulary and then later adding the Duolingo app for grammar.
What I felt I was missing or didn’t work well for me was learning verbs. I think it’s because they are always presented in sentences with endings when I at first just need to understand the verbs themselves.
I was complaining about this to Claude when it said, “I can teach you Korean verbs.” It began to do so and was far more effective than Drops or Duolingo because it forced me to type the words in Hangul rather than just tapping on them and because it was like a personal teacher. It was noticing my mistakes and coaching me. In a few days I learned 20 common verbs. Each day it quizzes me on the ones I have learned and adds new ones. I just started this a few days ago but I already wonder if it’s just a better way to learn.
It’s slower because I have to type but I suspect it’s more effective as well.
Anyone else using AI to learn Korean?
Their theme song just came to me this afternoon. I haven’t thought about it in perhaps 50 years at least.
And as it turned out (unsurprisingly), the commercial is on YouTube. It’s some guy dressed like a butcher I guess with a bunch of little kids following him through a zoo while singing the song. Who thought this up? Why a zoo?
It’s amazing how I can see a commerical I haven’t seen in 50 years and it all looks so familiar.
Scientists have found evidence that the brain may not respond to tinnitus the same way forever.
I just came across this. They have managed to get new hair cells to grow in the inner ear. It’s still in the research phase. But in addition to curing hearing loss I wonder if this could also cure tinnitus?
It is at least a reason to hope that a cure might truly be available in the foreseeable future.
At the Lego store at the local mall.
I measured a window to order a blind that I cannot return. It never occurred to me that tape measures are by default, right-handed. I tend to hold it in my left hand and pull the band out with my right. That means I’m measuring upside down.
The result was that I was off by a tiny bit but with a blind, that’s enough. It won’t fit. I’m going to try to see if there’s anything the blind company will do.
I went on Amazon and sure enough, you can order a left-handed tape measure. I found one with a nice, big digital readout that also has a mode to include the width of the tape measure itself for measuring, say, the inside of a window frame. 😃
I’m 62. I used to sleep 8 hours when I was younger. At some point I started sleeping just 6. I wasn’t sleepy during the day. I don’t take naps. But I wanted to sleep longer to give my brain more repair time.
I fall asleep easily and tend to stay asleep. I got a body pillow to help me stay on my side while I sleep. That helped. Then I got a 4” wedge to put under my pillow. According to my wife I don’t snore anymore since getting the wedge. The body pillow helped a bit with snoring as well. I was up to about 6.5 hours.
Then recently I noticed that I was back to 6 hours. I noticed that I basically always wake up at about 6:30AM. I don’t use an alarm. I just wake up when my body thinks it’s time to wake up. We have black out blinds in our bedroom so it’s pretty dark. It seems that it doesn’t matter what time I go to bed. I always wake up about 6:30AM.
A few nights ago felt tired around 11PM so it got ready for bed and fell asleep around 11:30AM. I decided the following night to stick to that same schedule. Now I’m getting 7 hours of sleep per night. It seems like the wake up time is the big factor so if I want to get more sleep, I just need to go to bed earlier.
They say that keeping the same sleep schedule helps. That certainly seems to be the case for me.
Remember these? I bought one for my son years ago. He just came across it while cleaning his room.
