After a serious road accident, would you know when to start CPR?

A traffic accident at the Henderson Road–Telok Blangah junction early this morning left a silver Toyota saloon car crashed into the traffic-light control box, knocking it down and causing the traffic lights to be out of service for almost nine hours.

It got me thinking.... in a serious road accident, what would you do if you came across an injured person who was unconscious and not breathing normally?

I'm a bit nervous about performing CPR on a stranger. Is it really necessary to do mouth-to-mouth, or can I just do hands-only compressions until the ambulance arrives?
