Black Bamboo Advice

My bamboo isn’t behaving the way I had hoped it would. I thought bamboo was fast growing and shoot up high but it looks quite scraggly. At this point I kinda regret not just planting a tree.

I water it, put homemade compost on it, and it is in a nice sheltered position from the wind. It gets partial sun. Zone 9a

First Aid Advice - Wound cleansing solution recommendations wanted

After an accident I gained some good perspective on how effective my first aid kit was along with my working knowledge of the supplies that I had to hand.

My partner cut themselves. The cut was deep, in a delicate spot, and pouring blood so I was hesitant to touch it (I didn’t want to cause additional pain) beside wrap it up and tell the patient to apply pressure to reduce the bleeding. It was 100% an A&E situation and required minor surgery so I couldn’t do much anyway.

What I am annoyed about is that I did not have the appropriate tools to clean it out. I need a wound cleansing solution that I can pour onto an open wound rather than manually clean it in a first aid situation. Further cleaning would occur at a later stage when bleeding stops. Suggestions?

(Of course I could use water but we did not have any to hand and the patient would have passed out on route to the sink. Ideally such solution would be antimicrobial too!)

Cut finger - how to optimise healing?

My husband cut his left index finger with a Stanley blade on the weekend. We went to A&E and then was checked out by a hand specialist so it’s been seen to by professionals of course. I did my best inspecting the wound and bandaging it up before the hospital could see to it but I am too squeamish to take a photo to share here.

He cut from the middle top of his finger straight down the nail to a little past the nail bed at a slight diagonal. He even sliced a little of the bone according to the X-rays. He’s been cleaned up and bandaged up by the hospital and will have his dressings changed tomorrow by a nurse. He’s on antibiotics and has been signed off of work.

What can promote optimal healing and potentially help it heal in a cosmetically appealing way?

[Anti Aging] Aging other than wrinkles?

I was wondering if anyone could educate me about how to prevent other types of aging. I feel like I see a lot of talk around wrinkle prevention and that’s all very well and good but not what I’m looking for. Looking at my older parents, theyre not particularly wrinkly but they are saggy. Is it the same sort of prevention routine? Suncream, moisturise, and retinol?

What about thinner skin? I see some actors/actresses who were youthful in the 90s but their skin seems thinner and hollow now. I initially thought it might be menopausal but some men get it too. It’s like their faces aren’t as thick or as plump as they used to be.

Can I get some advice as a customer?

I went on my honeymoon with a travel agents and essentially part of the honeymoon just weren’t good. I don’t want to complain here so I will omit the details and say very vaguely that it was at fault of the agent. We don’t have loads of money so for us to go somewhere that was not exactly ‘romantic’ (and quite frankly very tragic) is rather upsetting because there goes our money.

I was invited to fill out a post holiday survey (internal company thing, not public) and I left an honest review. I don’t like complaining so I really tried to mix in positive stuff but make my disappointment clear. My travel agent contacted me and took my experience to heart- they use customer experiences to help plan future trips. I’ve now been contacted by a client care team.

I missed their call and now I have an email essentially inviting me to call them back to discuss anything else further/tell them anything else. I don’t know how to treat this email. Part of me wants to be mad and cry because I am genuinely upset. I know better than to shoot the messenger and I hate entitled tantrums, which I fear I would be bordering on. If I am too polite then I doubt I’d be compensated. But I despite being an asshole. I’m tired and sad and don’t know what to do.

What should I do? How do you wish a customer brought an issue to you?

First garden with a limited budget, what should I plant?

I’ve been slowly working on my garden over the years and I’m at the stage where it’s less landscaping and more planting. I’m pretty picky about what goes in my garden as I have a limited budget and limited time. Ideally I’d like to buy once and not have anything too diva-ish (nothing that needs real hands on care to thrive and nothing that takes over the garden/gets too huge). Ideally I don’t want to do lots of watering since we don’t have an outside tap and our water butt is dry in summer.

Photo 1- I’d like another tall plant to put on the back right corner of the raised brick flower bed. It gets strong mid morning - early afternoon sun and then is either shaded by the shed or my house. The soil is mostly compost with some clay garden soil. My main concern is planting and tree and its roots dominate the bed. I was half considering a silver birch.

Photo 2 - I wanted to fill out my narrow boarder a little more. It’s heavy clay soil and the left side gets more sunlight than the right side (the fatsia on the left just out of frame is much bigger than the other two in frame because of the light difference). Partial sun overall. Flowers would be really nice but I’m not hopeful that they will get a chance to bloom. I do have some cyclamen in the ground.

Photo 3 & 4 - I was thinking about having a little wildlife corner next to my compost bin. Dig a little pond for creatures to drink from and a nice wild life friendly plant that bugs will love and things can shelter there since we used to get a toad visitor back when the garden was just decking. This spot is heavily shaded by the fence and house so it probably only gets a couple hours of strong direct sunlight. What plant would be good here?

What did the dentist do?

I noticed I had some seeds stuck in the annoying divots of my teeth after brushing last night. I removed the seeds and discovered that one of my bottom molars has a hole in it. I was super lucky to get an appointment with my dentist at 10:15 the next morning. They said it was superficial and likely from acid erosion. She prodded it and said it’s nothing to worry about. She said I could just leave it and keep it clean, or I could get a filling (no drilling). I opted for the filling because I really do not want to risk cavities. They put on this white stuff over the hole and it took a couple minutes to set. I love it!

The hole was previously a little divot that used to annoy the heck out of me for years as my tongue would feel it. Now it’s completely gone and I kinda want the same treatment for the neighbouring teeth as they’ve developed similar tiny divots in recent years. I have about 6 ish on one side of my mouth (top and bottom) probably because I favour chewing on that side. I’m sensitive on the other side.

Problem is that I’m not quite clear what the procedure I had done was? I could ask my dentist what it was but I am afraid of bothering them as they often give the impression that they hate NHS patients like me. So what do we think the procedure was called and can I pay for smaller superficial divots to have the same thing done?

I have included a photo to show that I mean. The hole that was filled kinda has a white halo, which gives a good impression on how big it is. Please ignore the very horrible stain on my premolar. I plan on seeing a hygienist about that. And no I’m not a smoker nor do I drink much red wine/tea/coffee, my teeth are just naturally a bit yellow 🙃 The upper set have rougher/more annoying divots but I struggle to take a photo.

Gifting whisky

I wanted to gift someone a nice bottle of whisky but I really don’t know where to begin. I would like to make an impression by getting something a little pricey but we don’t have a ridiculous amount of money to spend. What do you think would make a nice gift?

Edit: budget of £100-£150 and scotch / bourbon preferred

Husband may lose his job, what is a sensible way to deal with our situation now?

We just got back from our honeymoon and my husband has just learnt that is company has sort of gone into administration. Basically the company is in financial trouble and they’ve called in administrators early to potentially save the company - so they’ve not properly gone into administration but it’s a bad situation. The wider group has shut down over half of their companies and one of the most valuable companies they have is the one that employs my husband. From what I’ve heard, it looks like they will try to get someone to buy the company that employs my husband or get investors. All this information is 3rd hand info so it’s probably not very accurate but the general gist of it is that things aren’t great.

I still have my job but the company I work for is a sinking ship and there has been talk of it suddenly closing if the owner keels over given their bad health. I don’t earn much and can just about cover the mortgage with my income but little else. But we do have an emergency fund that will last us approximately 8-12 months without taking my earnings into consideration. So I’m not super worried unless something else unfortunate piles onto the situation like something breaking down!

I’m not quite sure what the best course of action is. Should my husband wait out the situation and see what comes of his job? Redundancy pay looks like it will be less than £5k and I’m not quite sure if he is eligible for job seekers allowance given my earnings and our savings. Or should he try to leave for a new job now? Is there anything we can do to prepare and soften the blow if the worst happens?

I’m going to look for a second job to supplement my income but I literally just got the news so we’re a bit surprised by the whole thing.

SPF Lip balm recommendations please

I’ve been religiously applying suncream whilst on holiday and I suddenly realised that I don’t protect my lips. It might explain why I’m often suffering with dry lips all year round so I would appreciate suggestions to help me protect them.

I pretty much exclusively use Vaseline on my lips because it’s the only thing that makes them not feel dry. I wanted to love brands like burts bees or carmex but it just didn’t feel like it relieves the dryness I tend to feel. Wild’s lip balm is okay. With my preferences in mind, can anyone suggest me an SPF lip balm? I’d rather not spend lots of money trying to find the right one

Are there any collectibles in Canada?

I’m expecting the answer to be “no” but I would really kick myself if I missed out.

Basically, I have a little travel journal that I will fill up with sketches, scraps of paper, and a couple of Polaroid photos. The people at the border were kind enough to stamp the first page for me! I was wondering if Canada might have stamps, stickers, or anything that I could scrap book for this travel journal?

PAYE employed and selling things online

I have a part time job, which doesn’t earn me much £11.5k per year. To help earn a little extra money I’ve been selling stuff online (mostly eBay) and I know that if I exceed a certain number of sales or profit then eBay will tell HMRC.

I’m not clear on the rules with tax and I would really appreciate some handholding so that I do not get into trouble. If I earn under £1000 from these sales, does that come out of my “personal allowance” or has that already been used up by my PAYE job?

My other half earns more at their job £35k. And if I hit my personal allowance limit I hoped to use their eBay account. And we can benefit from their personal allowance.

We keep our emergency funds in ISAs so we don’t pay tax on the interest that chunk of money will accumulate. And our other accounts (current and minor savings for big bills like car insurance) are unlikely to make much interest at all. I mention this since interest is the mostly likely factor to interfere with the above question. I only plan on selling about £900 worth of stuff per eBay account (if I manage to make that much) so we each get a generous £100 buffer for bank account interest.

I haven’t sold much yet, I’ve only made £100, but I just wanted to check this is all okay before I get carried away

This week my dad was complaining about being out of breath and having no energy. He was really upset because he thought “that’s it I’m old”. I got pretty suspicious and bought a blood oxygen meter thing from the pharmacy. It gave a low reading so I called an ambulance and they took us to A&E. He had a bunch of tests and was scheduled for an ultrasound.

The ultrasound showed a clot in his leg and then they injected dye into his blood to then check his lungs. He has multiple clots in his lungs. He’s been sent home with blood thinners and that’s that.

Obviously it’s all very upsetting to see. My main upset is seeing him be so tired and out of breath. The doctor says he has to be on the thinners for 6 months but I wonder when he will get over the large portion of breathlessness and fatigue. If people could share their experiences that might help me feel more informed of what to expect with his recovery. Thank you

My coworker, whom I share an office with, has been fairly lethargic all week and a bit out of breath. We talked about it and I suggested they get their ferritin checked because they recently had surgery.

Today he came in a was looking grim and was struggling to breathe from the walk from his car. It then hit me that it’s probably covid. He’s gone home and will be taking a test tonight. I’m stressed out because my honeymoon is on the 18th of May and the one time I had covid (after having all my vaccines) I was genuinely afraid I was going to die and could hardly move due to breathlessness and exhausting for 3 weeks. It was straight up hell. There’s a chance it’s flu but I was really bad when I got sick with flu in January.

What can I do? I have an iota carrageenan nasal spray which is supposed to have anti viral properties. Is there ANYTHING I can do to prevent this virus? We’ve spent so much money on this honeymoon

Original - https://www.reddit.com/r/composting/s/xTcrSdAYbO

I completely emptied the bin and the comments were right about it being too wet and high in nitrogen. The top clumps were crispy dry but just under the surface was a hell of a lot of moisture and a bad odour. I shovelled everything onto a tarp and put the bin back in its spot.

I put down a bed of wood shavings and began putting the compost back in the bin. I did the lasagna method with browns and stinky compost until the dang thing was full. I threw the left over compost on an unused flowerbed with the wood shavings like a mulch.

I left the bin 24hrs in the hope that the new browns would quickly absorb the moisture but it didn’t seem to do much of anything. So I took my fork and really kicked it about the top few layers of the bin. The wood shavings broke up the big clumps and it’s looking much better.

I’m not sure what to do. I’m going to check back in tomorrow to see how the moisture levels are doing but the original compost is wet whilst the wood is still fairly dry (looks like it’s starting to soak up moisture).

I wonder if I overcorrected? Does it need a sack of coffee grounds to even things out? Maybe I need to water it? Or maybe I now need to leave it be? Guidance would be appreciated!
