Intense anxiety over upcoming root canal

I've got a root canal coming this Monday on #3. It's not my first root canal. In fact, just last month I had one on #5, but I felt pain during that one at points which made it difficult. This coming appointment is on a tooth that, when it flares up, it's the worst pain imaginable, like screaming crying it's actually that bad.

I haven't chewed on that side since the last flare-up (which was about a month ago). I'm worried that all of that drilling and scraping and whatever they do is going to aggravate the nerve and make it the worst experience of my entire life. Are there any precautions I could take? Would it be safe to take Advil or Tylenol before the procedure?

I'm very scared. What's happening?

I've been in pain almost all day until I suddenly wasn't. Then my gum started swelling and as of current it looks like this. I'm on a trip so I won't be able to see a dentist until the start of next week.
