Weird popping noise within first 60-90 seconds of driving

2024 x7:

For the past few months, there is a single popping noise happening. It’s always within the first 60-90 seconds of driving. It sounds like someone knocks once right above the passenger side with their knuckle. Someone else described it as the sound of a golf ball hitting the car.

A slew of people on BimmerPost have the same issue, and one guy said his mechanic finally heard it and was waiting to get the diagnosis… and of course they never updated their post.

Has anyone else experienced this or know what the heck it is? I assume it has something to do with the sunroof motor, since that’s the only mechanical thing that would be up there….

Bosnia trip finds so far

Wife’s family has a home in Sana, and they have been in the area for generations.

Her brother knew of a site where local legend says an Ottoman-era Turkish villa used to be, and I got to hit that spot this morning.

Found an Iron hand-forged square nail, about 50% of a copper basin of some sort, and a hand-fired brick complete with a finger print.

I only had about an hour at the site, and barely scratched the surface. Can’t wait to go back!

Later that afternoon, I hit a field behind her family home. Her mother lost her gold wedding ring when they were running across the field fleeing their home when the Serbian army first rolled in, and I was hoping to find it.

Sanski Most saw HEAVY fighting during the Balkans war in the 90’s, so I wasn’t surprised when I started pulling up bullet casings.

What WAS a surprise was the type of casing I found: some trombonski metak M60’s, which were blank rounds used to fire a rifle grenade off the muzzle of an M48 Mauser. They have a very distinct red primer, so that the user didn’t accidentally use a standard round with a rifle grenade attached to the muzzle, which would have ended badly.

Also found some pre-war Yugoslav coins.

I have no idea what that aluminum flag looking thing is.

I’ll post more photos when I get back out there!

And yes- I’m hyper aware of the possibility of UXO. If I’m finding the trombonski metal M60’s, there’s a very good chance I may run across a dud rifle grenade. I’m avoiding any large signals. Thankfully, the Manticore SCREAMS when it hits something softball sized.

I also printed out mine maps.

Ok, that’s a new one…

Some kind of dental tool in the middle of an outfield?

About 4 inches down, so it’s been there for a bit.

Record day at the beach!

A record day for tent stakes, anyway!

Baker beach in San Fransisco. It was a trash minefield! I eventually decided I had collected enough bottle caps and stopped digging anything in the low 30s.

No gold, but I’ll never run out of tent stakes. Wife thinks the bracelet is silver, but there is no stamp so I have my doubts.

I think I also found an old square nail from what I imagine must have been a treasure galleon.

Two-ring day at the park

Finally getting the hang of this Manticore, and learning to trust the Ferrous detection.. less time digging trash is more time digging loot, and it seems to be paying off.

Had my first two-ring day today in the outfield of a local baseball field. One tungsten, and the other I can’t identify. No stamp, so sadly not silver I don’t think…

Still haven’t found a gold or silver ring, but I feel like I’m getting closer!

Why does my carrot make this noise?

Had this for a few years, but just started making this weird alarm sound. Makes the noise when I turn it on, then again when it gets near a target.

It’s made it all but useless.

First gold AND silver!

I got into metal detecting about 5 years ago and would drag my CTX-3030 from California to Florida during work trips, and stay an extra day or two to hit the beaches looking for a Spanish coin. Did that probably 10 or 15 times, and came up with hundreds of pull tabs, Bobby pins, and clad, but never anything of actual value.

Finally, this summer I decided to try a little closer to home. The sand still called, so I looked for public parks with volleyball courts figuring rings and necklaces would come off there just as easily as on the beach.

Hit the jackpot on my third park!

Gold necklace was found in the sand on the court!

As I was walking back to my truck, I decided to hit a little kiddie sand play area, because I wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight wondering if I left anything behind… and that’s where I found the bracelet.

Never give up, folks!

A hawk chased a small bird into my window

Shockingly, the little guy survived the impact. My wife was sitting on the couch on the other side of the window and shooed the hungry hawk away.

I went out side and found the bird on the ground blinking rapidly, so I picked it up and cupped it in my hands for about 5 minutes until it came back to its senses. He flew off without thanking me (unless pooping in my hand counts).

Typical.

What on earth is this?

Found this guy in a roll and I’ve never seen anything like it. Is this somehow special? Looks to be made of brass. I’m keeping expectations low as I suspect this was someone’s chemistry experiment 😂

KA-BAR collection

I recently inherited this framed KA-BAR collection, and I don’t know a thing about it. He’s had it since I was a kid (I’m 43 now).

Despite the cool license plate, I don’t believe this is an official KA-BAR collection; a lot of the knives show wear on them, so I believe this was a personal collection that my father somehow got his hands on long ago.

Any KA-BAR experts here? Is this collection any good? Is it worth holding on to in terms of appreciating value?

Constant printing issues…o

Been running into a ton of issues with my son’s toy box. On just about every print, the bottom right corner is lifted/warped.

Finally figured out how to calibrate it via the software on his PC, and this is what printed out.

Seems like the left half prints OK, but the right side starts stringing out. From what I’ve read on this forum, that points to the right side of the printer tray being slightly lower than the left side. Is that the case? If so, how do I raise it?
