What are your favourite literary journals these days?

I’m a regular reader and am subscribed to good number of them.

The ones I (not an American) most enjoy are the London Review of Books, New Left Review, Cleveland Review of Books, Harper’s, New York Review of Books, Point Magazine and the Boston Review.

[27/M] Looking for a penpal - sharing snippets and vignettes of life

Hi, I live in Bombay, India. I’m looking for a penpal - someone to share snippets and vignettes of my life with. I have a wide range of interests. I’m into literature, music, cinema, popular culture, history, law, economics and philosophy (political philosophy in particular). My curiosity is boundless and I’m certain I can entertain and engage in a conversation about any topic whatsoever. I work in big law and have erratic hours. I also moonlight as a screenwriter. I’m honing my craft and hoping to pitch a couple of screenplays in the next couple of years.

Cheers

Etymological connection related to the Sun

Is there an etymological connection between the Sanskrit word ‘Ravi’ - which means the Sun, and ‘Ra’ - the Egyptian deity of the noon-day Sun?

Offered a modelling gig, have questions

I (27/M) was recently at a cafe, in Bandra, and was offered a gig to model for a niche clothing brand (~15K followers on IG) by a stranger - apparently the brand manager. I’m not in any way associated with the fashion / modelling / clothing industry and was taken aback at the offer. I apparently fit the brand’s aesthetic well and they’re keen to have me for a photo shoot with them. The brand manager shared his business card and the IG handle of the brand.

I’m rather skeptical of this whole affair. I value my privacy. Is it common for such gigs to be offered impromptu, on a whim? I have not accepted the offer yet and have told the brand manager that I’ll respond to him if I’m interested (I’m not, and do not intend to reach out to him).

What are your thoughts on Max Lawton’s translation of Schattenfroh?

What’s the quality of Lawton’s translation of Schattenfroh like? How does it compare with Lentz’s writing in German?

I gather Lawton’s translations are rather polarizing.

I’m trying to decide between The Tunnel (by William Gass) and Schattenfroh, as my principal reading for this summer.
