Can I use winter tires temporarily?

Hi everyone,
One of my rear tires has a slow leak/puncture. I took it to Canadian Tire, and they said because my car is AWD, I should replace all four tires.
Right now, I’m on a tight budget, so I’m thinking of shopping around at local tire shops to compare prices before buying a full new set. But I still need to use my car for work and daily driving.
I have a full set of winter tires already mounted on rims. Would it be okay to swap all four winter tires onto the car and use them temporarily for about 2 to 3 weeks until I decide where to buy new tires?
I understand winter tires can wear faster in warm weather, but I’m mainly wondering if this is a safe short-term option compared to driving with the slow leak.

Kia Sportage tire replacement

I have an AWD Kia Sportage and recently got a puncture on the shoulder area of one tire.
I went to a tire shop and they said the tire can’t be repaired because the puncture is on the shoulder. They also said because it’s AWD, I need to replace all 4 tires, not just the damaged one.
The remaining tread depth on my tires is about 7/32”.
Is replacing all 4 tires really necessary in this situation, or could I replace just the damaged tire, or replace two tires

Slow air leak in back tire. Canadian Tire says I need all 4 tires replaced

Hi everyone,
I have a slow air leak in one of my back tires. I took it to Canadian Tire and they said the puncture is in the shoulder of the tire, so it can’t be repaired. They also told me I should replace all 4 tires.
Does anyone know a reliable used tire shop where I can buy one matching tire, or maybe a more affordable set? I’m also open to any advice

Kirkland vs Rogaine minoxidil: foam or liquid better if I wear a helmet for work?

I’m thinking of starting minoxidil and I’m trying to decide between Kirkland and Rogaine, and also whether to go with foam or liquid.

I work as a site engineer, so I have to wear a safety helmet for long periods during the day. I’ll also be wearing a helmet cap/liner underneath. Because of that, I’m wondering if foam or liquid would make any difference.

2024 Kia Sportage – Underbody Splash Shield Scraped and Cracked

Hi everyone,
I have a 2024 Kia Sportage and recently noticed some damage to the plastic underbody splash shield. Can these cracks be repaired, or is replacement usually recommended?

Need Grammar Book Recommendations to Improve CELPIP Speaking and Writing Scores

Hi everyone,

I’ve been preparing for the CELPIP exam for the past four months and have taken it four times. Each time, I’ve scored well in listening and reading, but I keep getting only 8 in speaking and writing.

When I ask ChatGPT for feedback, it usually says I need to improve my grammar. I’ve tried watching videos, but I learn better by reading books and doing workbook-style exercises. That approach has helped me a lot so far.

Could anyone suggest a grammar book or workbook suitable for my level that could help me improve my speaking and writing scores for CELPIP?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

New to Geotechnical Engineering – Questions About Boreholes, Soil Testing, Backfilling, and Career Growth

Hi everyone,
I’m new to a geotechnical department and recently started working on two projects:

Road reconstruction
Water main construction, including soil investigation for backfilling requirements
I have a few basic questions that I’m hoping experienced geotechnical engineers can help me understand:

How do engineers decide the location and spacing of boreholes on a project?
How is the required borehole depth determined for road reconstruction or water main projects?
After collecting soil samples and obtaining laboratory results (grain size, moisture content, compaction characteristics, etc.), what key information or design parameters does the project engineer derive from these results?

For backfilling operations, what types of environmental testing or environmental soil samples are typically required, and under what circumstances?
How are compaction requirements selected, and how do they influence the choice of backfill material?

As someone working as a field technician, I also want to grow toward an engineering role. From your experience:
What technical knowledge should I focus on learning?
What field observations are most important to understand and document?
What skills separate a good field technician from a future geotechnical engineer?
I appreciate any advice, resources, or lessons learned from your experience. Thanks in advance!

LWhat does it mean if you dream of becoming a crow?

Last night, right before waking up, I had a dream where I transformed into a crow. I was flying over the tops of trees and seeing everything from above. I don’t really remember how I felt emotionally during the dream, just that I was a crow and I was flying.

Does anyone have any ideas about what this might symbolize? Have any of you ever dreamed about shapeshifting into an animal, especially a crow?

SPT N-Value Calculation When Split Spoon Refuses Early

Hi everyone,
I’m fairly new to geotechnical engineering and had a question about SPT N-value calculations when the split spoon sampler encounters refusal.
From my understanding, the standard N-value is the sum of the blows required for the second and third 6-inch penetrations. However, I’m a bit confused about how to report or interpret the results when refusal occurs before completing the full 18 inches.

For example:
What if the sampler refuses within the first 6 inches?
What if it refuses during the second 6 inches?
What if it refuses during the third 6 inches?
How would you report the SPT value in each of these situations?

Also, I’ve seen some drillers stop at 50 blows for a 6-inch increment and call it refusal, while others continue to 100 blows in certain conditions.
When should drilling stop at 50 blows?
In what situations would you continue to 100 blows?
How do you typically report the N-value when refusal occurs before the full penetration is achieved?
I’m trying to understand both the technical reasoning and common industry practice.
Thanks in advance for any guidance and examples from the field!

Hey everyone,

I recently accepted an offer with a company and I’m set to join on May 11.

Now, a different department from the same company has reached out for a screening call. I’m not sure if they’re aware that I’ve already accepted another role internally.

Should I let them know upfront and leave it to them, or just attend the screening call first?

Would appreciate any advice.
