TL;DR should every asthmatic have a pulmonologist? Who do you go to when you need a change in medication/care?

I’m 40/F, diagnosed with asthma in 2024. An urgent care doc diagnosed it after I went in not knowing what was wrong. I didn’t have asthma symptoms as a child or younger adult.

It’s generally been mild, but since July of this year I’ve been having a tight/painful chest, fatigue, and low stamina/getting winded easily. It’s not all the time but it will last for weeks when it happens. I take Symbicort for my preventative inhaler and Albuterol for my rescue, but they haven’t been helping in any combination.

I’ve been to urgent care and they put me on antibiotics thinking it was from a sinus infection. But I don’t feel better. At my 2 urgent care visits they listened to my breathing and took my oxygen, and weren’t concerned about either. They didn’t do a chest x-ray.

Last year I saw an allergist and an ENT. No allergies and no nasal polyps or other sinus issues. My last visit with my GP was in July right before this started happening, bloodwork and everything was normal.

I do have GERD but I take Famotidine for it every day. I exercise a lot (mostly strength training) but my ability to exercise is very limited right now because of this.

In my house I have 2 air purifiers and do my best to keep dust low, I vacuum often etc. I have been keeping the windows closed recently because it’s hot out.

Shoulda I ask my GP to refer me to a pulmonologist? Or is there some other kind of doctor I should be hitting up? I’m still new to the asthma world. My mom had asthma her whole life but she died last year so I can’t ask her :( (she didn’t die from asthma).

Is there anywhere closer to Pasadena than Mount Wilson that I might be able to see it? It doesn’t have to be perfect, just somewhere with low-ish light pollution. Just wondering! Thank you!
