A good friend has an older Chevy Equinox in need of a new timing belt. She’s gotten a couple of quotes in the $2,000 range, for a vehicle probably not worth $4,000. She is on a very limited income and works two jobs, and is also the primary caregiver for a disabled Vet in their home. She’s extremely proud and reluctant to accept help (much less ask for it), so I’m seeking out recommendations for preferred mechanics in the area, to make sure she’s getting the best quote she can.

Any thoughts / suggestions greatly appreciated. Posting here as a final & personal recap of a really unfortunate event. I’m the Public Info Officer for OPCD, the agency which runs 911 & 311.

TL;DR: The news outlet retracted the story & “apologized.” OP is still pissed.

The longer version:
A little more than a week ago, the Shreveport Times posted a false, inflammatory story alleging the replacement of humans with AI to answer New Orleans 911 calls. It took four days to get a response from anyone at the S-Times or its parent corp, USA Today. I spent every waking moment from 1:30A Friday (after seeing it posted in this sub) to Monday morning trying to get a response, and also trying to manage & respond to the massive negative blowback of this viral event.

After the first, rather pointed, phone call with us Monday morning, 72 hours after first contacting them, a senior editor acknowledged the “issues” in the piece, and did make (some of) our requested/demanded changes to the article; but the news outlet would not and did not publicly note anything amiss with the previous story, until much later, after the story had continued on as viral event for another 36 hours.

We continued to demand a retraction. Then, Tuesday about 9pm, a VP of News at USA Today emailed to formally apologize. (“We regret,” which is as close to possible to the actual word allowed in their world, I suppose. To be truly sorry one has to show evidence of an actual conscience, but I digress.) The admission was posted as an Editor’s Note atop the article (which by then had been “updated” but had included no info about the errors that led to the edits.)

“Editor’s Note: The original version of this story did not meet our editorial standards. We are conducting a thorough review and implementing immediate measures to strengthen our process. We regret the error and any distress it may have caused. This story will be updated as additional facts or information warrant.”

In further, limited exchanges with that USA Today VP, I asked for their assistance in trying to use their resources to contact the largest of the bloggers/other news outlets, etc, who had re-shared the initial fake story as-is. I also suggested that a donation to a relevant nonprofit supporting mental health of public safety professionals, in the approximate amount of the revenue generated by the viral & false S-Times story, would be a nice thing to do. They curtly declined on both and basically said they’d done all they should. About what I expected.

This was not a victimless exercise in corporate news malfeasance. Our Comms Specialists taking 911 calls work 12 hour shifts, and they regularly have to bear live witness to some very horrible and traumatic things happening in real-time at the other end of the line. They’re tasked with calmly & professionally trying to get vital information from someone who just got shot, someone who just found their child unresponsive in a neighbor’s pool, a crying child calling from the middle of a violent domestic situation. How it must have felt for any of them to be on a much-needed break at 1AM Friday and then see it blowing up online that their employer would be replacing them with a computer to take these kinds of calls.

I’ve been in & around news reporting & media for more than 30 years. This is honestly, objectively, one of the most egregious examples of sloppy journalism I’ve ever witnessed, especially involving one of the biggest topics & public concerns at the moment: In this case, the overall apprehension of losing jobs to AI, combined with the very real & valid worries about AI being inserted in life-and-death situations. The combined lack of common sense, basic reporting failures, and absence of any real editorial safeguards are all just…astounding.

My personal thanks to everyone who helped push back on the initial story & for this sub’s patience with my venting here over the previous week.

I work for the agency which runs New Orleans 911.

The Shreveport Times article flatly states that AI answers New Orleans 911 calls for all types of incidents. This is not factual, nor close to the truth: The Orleans Parish Communications District, which runs New Orleans 911 & 311, *has* used an AI answering tool for two years in a very limited scope:
- For some 911 calls about car crashes;
- Only when all live call-takers are on other calls,
- And when the 911 call originates from within 200 meters of an already-reported accident.

Here’s how it works:
- If a 911 call originates from within a radius of 200 meters of a crash which has already been reported, and all call-takers are busy, the AI tool will answer & ask the caller, “Are you calling about the accident on S Carrolton at Oak St”?
- If the caller replies “yes”, the AI will respond that the crash has already been reported; then, will ask the caller if they were involved, if they need medical attention, etc.
- If the answer to any of the follow-up AI Q’s is “yes,” they will be routed to a live operator. If “no,” the AI thanks them for their call & lets them know responders have been notified.

The AI triage tool is not used in New Orleans 911 for anything other than auto crashes/accidents. (OPCD *is* expanding the use of AI on the 311 side.) I’m going to try to reach the reporter Friday morning. <Edit: Removed unnecessarily petty jab at the reporter & media outlet.>

Also of note: The OPCD tech team built a pretty exhaustive training/reference dictionary & voice/audio samples of the sometimes-unique pronunciations of hundreds of New Orleans street names.

Overall, it’s worked very well as a tool to triage a particular category of calls, and has helped to reduce wait times for all callers by not having all call-takers taking calls about the same accident at the same time.
