Math/Physics transfers, any advice for someone planning to transfer as a math/physics major?

This is my last year at CC and I practically have 0 extracurriculars. I’ve developed a close relationship with my math professor (he was my professor for calc 1-3 and possibly differential equations), and will probably ask him for a LOR.

I’m not sure what I can even do during to help my application. I was planning on retaking the SAT. I also have a teacher from elementary school who has kept contact with my mother and I can maybe ask to volunteer and teach math, but don’t know if that’ll actually happen. I could try and tutor calc 1, but I’ve been sort of busy self studying real analysis, linear algebra, and number theory/combinatorics.

That’s all I really have and some of these aren’t even guaranteed. I was planning on transferring to

Berkeley
Uchicago
CMU
Brown
UPenn
Johns hopkins
UMD (my state school and probably the only school I have change of getting accepted)
and Princeton, but I know I don’t have a shot I’m simply just applying to apply

Is there anything I can do or is it pretty much over for me?

Self study questions

I spoke to my calc 3 professor since I wanted to self study some things but forgot to ask him a couple questions so I’m here.

I showed him a couple of books I own and he said I should start with how to prove it and the first two chapters of baby rudin. I should mention that I don’t really have too much experience with proofs. Although I did finish calc 1 and 2 with him, I don’t really understand the theory which is why I wanted to read spivak or apostol.

My memory is pretty bad so my algebra and trig aren’t where I wanted them to be so he said I could read basic mathematics by lang. Now I’m just a little confused. Also he asked how much time I can put into math and I said about 10 hours a week since I have other classes.

Should I just stick with the first two chapters of baby rudin and read how to prove it? should I read apostol or spivak instead? or maybe basic mathematics? I also plan on retaking the SAT in december so I have to study for that

What should I be focusing on?

I just finished calculus 2 and still feel like I don’t truly understand what I learned. It was an accelerated class I took over the summer. I also have pretty bad memory.

I remeber some stuff from calculus 1 and 2, but still struggle with some problems. For example this problem ∫ (x² + 1)/(x⁴ + 1) dx

My mind goes blank trying to solve it. This obviously means I should review but I start calculus 3 in 5 days.

I also have to retake the SAT (for college transfer applications) and need to brush up on my algebra and trigonometry. My algebra could definitely use some reviewing and my trigonometry has always been mediocre at best.

This matters even more since I plan to major in mathematics and physics. I was going to use spivak or apostol to study but I don’t know how to write proofs yet. I was also thinking about using AOPS books for reviewing algebra and trigonometry (also geometry since I took it in like 9th or 10th grade and don’t remember much of anything from that class). Or should I focus on calculus 3?

Any advice?

Diamond is actually a horrible rank to be in.

I went on an account that’s predicted gm3, and I honestly see why so many people get hardstuck in diamond.

Everyone and their mother has an ego and it’s honestly the worst I’ve ever seen. Don’t get me wrong a lot of higher ranked players do as well, but it’s just crazy here.

Also, some people type way too much it’s honestly annoying. One fight passes and either you or someone else on the team didn’t get any picks that fight, someone is always telling you to swap. What’s worse is that half the time people have no clue what they’re saying.

I mean I wanted to ban mantis because of how stupidly strong she is, and everyone just kept counter banning me with punisher, CnD, luna. While they’re all pretty strong, I personally don’t believe these heroes should take up a ban slot (but there is nuance to this claim and it’s based on what comp you’re running, which doesn’t apply in this case because they were on mag & hulk). My teammates swore she wasn’t broken and of course we lost the game to a mantis.

The throwing is actually insane as well. People throw over anything too. had someone threaten to throw my game because I picked widow as if she isn’t one of the best dps picks in the game right now. Once he saw me playing amazing, he of course started blaming other people.

Which is another thing. No one has any sense of accountability. It’s always someone else’s fault. Had a tank go 7-13 with 1 final and blame it on the dps. The dps had 8 finals but they did have like over 15 deaths each. I had like 8.

I feel like a lot more people need to actually shut up on focus on their own gameplay. Not saying you can’t com and make suggestions, but getting toxic over it is ridiculous. Yeah I know someone playing bad is irritating but so what man no need to bash them leading to them playing even worse or just straight up throwing.

This rank is just pretty annoying and truly think you have to be some of the strongest individuals to not lash out at these people.

Which textbook to start with?

I never took phsyics in high school and start physics 1 after this semester (I switched to engineering late and the courses were taken).

I have two physics textbooks (Giancoli and Halliday) but don’t know which to start with. Giancoli seems more like HS physics while Halliday is calculus based.

Which is the better option?

Also I’ve already finished calculus 2 and start calculus 3 in fall.

What’s it like working in finance?

I’m a math and physics undergrad student who plans to go for a phd in numerical analysis and quantum information science. I was just thinking about future careers I could possibly look into and one was finance.

I don’t really know what I can do in finance or if it’s even worth it. I just wanted to ask a couple questions.

How many hours do you work a week and how would you describe the work-life balance?

How would you describe your mental health?

What are the cons of working in finance and is it worth it?

how was your experience in grad school and was it worth it?

I’m a computer science major but honestly don’t really a have a passion for it. I do have passion for math and physics and was thinking about getting my masters, PhD, or both if I can. I don’t know if I’m even smart enough for that so it’s still kind of a dream I guess.

I’m just curious as to what an average day would look like, how was your financial situation, how was your mental health, and anything else you feel like adding that might be important.

I’m also curious as to what careers I might be able to get into. I’m not really interested in become a teacher but who knows maybe my mind changes.

Need help with deciding major

I’m going into my second semester of community college and it’s almost time for me to transfer. I’m a CS major and I’m having second thoughts about whether this is the right major for me or not. I really only chose CS because I heard it paid well and this was when I was a sophomore in high school. I just ended up choosing it because I didn’t really know what I wanted to do and believed that I would do well in the subject.

At the same time, I was trying to transfer into competitive schools since I did practically nothing during high school. Studying has been hard with ADHD though. Some people make it work but I truly don’t know how. Even right now I’m working on 4 assignments that are due today + studying for exams I have to take on monday, tuesday, and thursday which I had 2-3 weeks to study for.

Anyway, I truly do think coding is fun but CS isn’t just coding. The problem is, I’ve practically cheated on every coding assignment I’ve had. Not looking for sympathy here because I willing to chose to use AI to code. I can’t make any excuses here. I haven’t had to cheat in math. I somehow have an A in calc 2 without opening my textbook.

I found competitive coding fun and truly wanted to pursue CS, but I don’t know. Maybe it was just a mini hyper fixation I had that’s dwindled. I’m now thinking about doing math + physics, but I’m conflicted. First reason is, my CC only has math and physics pathways for teachers and I don’t want to be a teacher. Also, I can’t stop thinking about money. I know it shouldn’t be the main decider but it just is.

I’m still looking for jobs in these fields I might actually enjoy and not only pursue for the money it brings. Maybe I just need to give CS a chance. I mean I’ve cheated on every coding assignment and I haven’t had a “real” compsci class that goes deep into theory and such so it’s not like I’m actually doing much. I mean it looks fun it really does but I just can’t seem to study.

What should I do? Do I just drop cs and pursue math and physics? Also I’ve never formally taken a physics class. I’ve kind of only read textbooks and watched topics in physics. It would be kind of dumb to major in it without having a formal physics class, but I take it next semester so I’ll find out how I truly feel about it.

Any advice?

2 questions I wanted to ask

  1. How many mouses is too many and is there any point in having more than 1?

I play a ton of competitive games (which I admittedly shouldn’t be doing), had been looking for a new mouse. I swapped from the mchose l7 —> scyrox v8 —> beast x pro —> GPX2 —> op1 8k. I really love the op1 and loved the beast x but had to return it due to it being faulty. I was going to repurchase another mouse, but like is it really worth it? i mean I just wanted to have one wireless mouse if I get tired of the op1.

  1. Which is the better buy: Un1us Black lotus or Arbiter Akitsu?

I feel blank and don’t know what to do

I’m in community college and currently taking 2 summer classes before going starting my second and possibly last year.

Before college, I never really had any life goals or ambitions. All I cared about was playing video games and being good at them. I mean I’m like that with everything and my therapist says I have perfectionism.

My senior year, I really wanted to get out of my depression and anxiety, but my grades weren’t good enough to get into the college I wanted. I settled with community college and felt insanely confident that I would transfer to that school.

My first semester was meh. I lost my 4.0 though. Then I got 2 more B’s my second semester. It felt like my mental health just tanked during CC. Getting those B’s didn’t help. I felt worthless during that winter break and even more so during my 2 week summer break before starting classes again. I hadn’t really done anything to add to my application for college. Even now as I sit here, I still have nothing.

I know what I have to do, it just feels like I simply don’t want to do it. Nothing is enjoyable. Even the games I’ve played as a coping mechanism aren’t working anymore. I feel like I’m going manic at times. Ive just been jumping from playing a random game for 2 minutes, to my phone, to staring at my wallpaper, to my phone again, then staring at the ceiling.

My therapist suspects I have ADHD/Autism and I’m getting tested soon so I’ll find out. I don’t know what a diagnosis will change but hey, I won’t know until I do it I guess.

I’ve also taken a break from class. I skipped this entire week and will try to go back next week, I just feel like I needed a break.

I don’t know what to though. I’ve just been kind of sitting here. I’m already on 20mg of lexapro, but I still feel like crap.

I feel like studying and trying to improve my life, but I just feel l can’t be bothered. It feels like I don’t care about much which is both good and bad. Like when I was playing a game today. My teammates wanted me to swap characters because I was playing bad, I just kind of told them I didn’t care how they felt and if we won or lost. They just rightfully got mad at me, but I just didn’t care. I don’t know why I did that because I hate when it happens to me.

I just don’t know dude.

This game has altered my psyche

I used to be a good kid. Always wished the best for others and was extremely nice. After playing this game, the person I once was has been lost.

The things I’ve said to people in this game have been nothing short of insane. I hated everyone who thought they were good at this game and seeing them lose brought about the greatest sensation I’ve ever felt. But what was it all for. Just to hit eternity in a virtual game which brings me no value. I’ve skipped studying time, math/coding competitions, and even lost my 4.0 to just hit eternity and get mad at strangers on the internet. Genuinely what the fuck am I doing with my life.

I’m here to announce, I will be taking an indefinite hiatus from this game (unless magik gets a new skin 👀). Don’t miss me too much guys. I love yall.

I think I just have to give up.

I’m trying to transfer this upcoming cycle, but I have no hope of getting in anywhere. I lost my 4.0 to the stupidest reasons ever. I had an ethics professor who I genuinely believe didn’t give grades over 95 on any essay. Plus I tanked one essay due to procrastination and got a 75 on it. I ended up getting two more B’s which brought down my 4.0 to a 3.6. I don’t know what my gpa will be after finishing calc 2 and another programming class, but I’m kinda freaking out.

That’s not all. I have no ec’s to my name. None. I tried to participate in math competitions so I had to study for that, while also studying for coding competitions, and learning how to code/create my first real project, plus my actual classes. I obviously got burned out and didn’t end up producing anything. My last year is going to start before transferring and I don’t think I’ll be able to do anything noteworthy during that timeframe.

It’s just cooked.

I’m thinking about transferring after a third year, but I don’t think that’s a good idea. Maybe after one more semester, but again I’m not sure schools accept many third year transfers.

The schools Im really focusing on are CMU, Uchicago, John hopkins, berkeley, and I guess Upenn, but that’s a reach. Scratch that every school on this list is a reach.

I mean my state school isn’t the worst (UMD), so I guess I’ll just settle with that. If I even get in.
