Having a ton of spiders roam around your house is a good thing

Last year I started getting all these flying bugs in my house and could not figure out why. I checked all the windows were secured, made sure when I was going in and out to do it quickly, deep cleaned everything and I could not figure it out.

Then the flies started reducing in numbers .. but like were still in unacceptable numbers. And then the spiders. I started noticing them everywhere. At least they don’t buzz around but was unsettling. During the deep clean I took a picture off the wall in my basement and thousands of tiny spiders just streamed out from the back which was freaky. (I through the picture out, it was funny to me but not like sentimental art).

And again was just looking around like why is this happening. And I figured it out and there was a hole inside the filter of the house that takes hot air from the drying machine to an outside exhaust port. And in the same room I had my cats litter boxes. So I think just a faint whiff of poop when one of the cats took a dump the flies would just stream in through.

It’s hard to explain but think of it like the Star Wars Death Star run except the hope is to eat some poop.

That was fixed and I assume the spiders did the clean up work. I don’t like killing bugs myself. But I am ok with the spiders doing that.

Now I do wonder because im seeing less spiders if they have just started eating each other :/ Not sure how that is going to play out. But thank you to them overall.

I just let em be .. it’s certainly freaky sometimes. There is a storage closet I dont use much in my basement and opened it once and it was like a spider bonanza and they all froze … it was awkward like uhhhh hey guys what’s up? There were two spiders that were removed from the house .. the first one I saw this bulbous shiny black spider with a red mark on it running by and just smashed it out of and instant reaction, I feel bad about that.

And then a couple weeks later saw another one of those things and this time captured it in a cup and took it outside and released it. I’m no spider expert but they looked like black widows and doing research there are also apparently a lot of spiders that look like black widows but aren’t and also the black widow itself isnt really even dangerous unless you are elderly or infirm.

So thanks spiders for helping me keep that weird fly situation under control, hope you are all taking it easy on each other now that there are no flies.

Is there an exact 😅 way to get replacement utility blades out of one of these things or am I just hopelessly dumb?

I feel like I’m missing something. The way I understand it and asking this bc I think I actually don’t:

  1. Turn the thing upside down so gravity stacks the blades at the bottom. 2. Push up the stack opposite of the slot the blade emerges from 3 ??? Half the time this takes one second as the blade emerges from the slot, but the other half of the time I’m finagling with the thing for five minutes before I get the new blade to pop out.

The blades themselves I actually really like and it’s a good deal … just feel like I must be missing something in getting them out of their container

My sort of accidental “stingray” made while building the internal structure of a large plant design

I say sort of because once I noticed just a whiff of the stingray shape while building something like the beams and rafters for the inside of a giant hosta plant for my mom, I definitely intentionally leaned into it.

First just for fun. Then surprisingly it became very useful. Idk if other people have this happen but when I am making a really big design that needs an internal framework sometimes I get lost building the framework. Which sounds dumb but I think sometimes I can’t hold the two ideas of the internal support and how I picture the final design both in my head at the same time and I can get lost… like what am I making again.. wait 😅

So helpful I decided let’s just pop on some sticker googly eyes and it will be an Easter egg inside the final plant design.

Also I have a question: for the love of god how do you take a decent picture of an animal balloon in terms of lighting and the equipment being a newish iPhone. I swear I will not be offended was by any advice/suggestions, I just can’t figure it out.

my ex gave her grandma a "freak book" as a Christmas gift, it did not go over well

so the episode is hilarious of course. my ex made what I thought was just kinda a joke like what if at christmas in a couple weeks i give my grandma a freak book ... like we all open up our presents and then ..

i told her idk about that, like yeah funny joke but don't actually do that. it would not go over well.

but it turned out she was serious .. i tried to gently dissuade her that this is just not a good idea. so i think i actually paid for it, we ordered a "freak book" online. And curious I read some of the book and it was really fucking sad, how these people were exploited on many cases. I might actually see if I can find the book and order a copy for myself ... very interesting, very sad.

and i didnt want to get into a big argument so christmas morning i told her im just saying this is a bad idea. she said everyone is going to crack up laughing when grandma opens the present and it's a freak book. ok ... good luck.

i can't remember exactly but i think most of the family were fans of Curb, probably not grandma tho. she was like 90 years old. so christmas day we open up our gifts and it comes grandma's turn. she was confused like what is this book about and had to get her glasses and then just said oh dear ... and it was just dead silence in the room. whoops

My interpretation of the hosta plant

Always loved these plants. When I was a kid I even learned how to crossbreed them to make hybrids, so I picked my two most unusual hostas and cross pollinated them and grew the seedlings in a little cupboard in the basement with a light … the result the most boring hosta you could imagine 😭

Anyone have happy accidents to share? My balloon dirk (failed sword) and how I accidentally turned a 260 into a 1.5 x 120

  1. The twist for the classic sword design is something I have been practicing to improve. I can usually get it together so I’m not a total beginner but no way have am confident in the move yet. I can usually get it together into the classic design but sometimes with a lot of effort/needing multiple balloons.

This silver balloon I just could not get the classic look to hold. But I did make it to the bottom and held it. I thought that actually looks kinda elegant actually, so I finished the design.

So the balloon dirk which I totally meant to make on purpose. 😉

  1. I have a really great and supportive friend where we have some interests in common, but balloon twisting is not one we share, like he is excited for me to have this interest because it makes me happy, but not in the balloons themselves. Which is really touching to me.

So we had plans and I wanted to show off this new electric pump I bought. To be clear what happened next was operator error on my part, and thankfully I didn’t break the pump after what I did because I really like it when I’m not being an idiot.

So I was trying to show off all the different features but quickly, like he is excited for me to be excited but doesn’t need a detailed explanation (well that I was not qualified to give). I quickly ran through the buttons and the machine went crazy inflating a balloon. In hindsight i must have sent a bunch of different signals to the motor in rapid succession .:. Not smart by me.

I couldn’t get it to stop inflating the balloon after i had mashed a bunch of buttons. And saw the 260 balloon getting longer and longer and thought oh no this is gonna be a really crazy loud pop.

I managed to unplug the pump and lunged for the ballon and got a hold on the knot and the pressure seemed actually normal (??) so I tied it off. It’s twice as long as a regularly inflated 260. I have no explanation for why it didn’t pop. I’m not going to do anything further to it, I’ll just let it be in as a beautiful freak.

Bought a hairband set on Amazon that got stuck (still is) in my hair I have been growing out for 6 years. Amazon repeatedly asked me if I wanted to return it .. well it's stuck to my head

I'll recap this bizarre story. To start yes, a headband I bought from Amazon is still stuck in my hair as I write this. I have been trying every solution for loosening things stuck in hair. I am about where I started and it's day two. I really don't want to but if I cant get it out by tomorrow I am going to have to go just get it cut out and will go from long hair I have been growing for 6 years to basically a buzzcut.

For the past few years, once it was long enough I started using the classic hair tie things/cloth headbands to manage my long hair. I am a man, I had wanted long hair for awhile but would always grow it out a bit and then chicken out during the awkward stage and get it cut. Six years ago I finally decided to just go for it, or just don't do it again bc basically i was in a repeated cycle of my hair looking like crap half the time. So do it or dont.

So a few days ago I needed some more headbands so I went to Amazon. An interesting product came up, metal hairbands (idk if linking to product pages is allowed here, but i will share the link in a reply if it is). $8 for a 6 pack. Seemed about right, tho my experience was buying cloth hairband packs. It had a lot of good reviews (I am learning a lot in this area as I take breaks between trying to get this thing off my head!).

So I got my hair ready brushed it all straight bc I had never used one of these metal hairbands before. I put one on and it just kind of sat on my head and didnt hold any of the hair one way or the other. So I tried another one and applying it to my head it immediatey coiled up my minute ago straight hair and I cannot get this thing out.

I contacted customer service and as to be expected the first chat was AI and the AI suggested I return it for a refund. And this is not my complaint, of course the AI would not be able to decipher the bizarre situation. That is not the issue. I was able to escalate it and the first real person I talked to also suggested I return it.

And when I asked how am I supposed to return something that is stuck on my head that person seemed to get freaked out and I was transferred to another agent who was very fluent in English and trying to do damage control. They offered to refund the $8 without me returning it. I told them no I don't give a shit about the $8 I am just outraged by both the specific seller and Amazon I want to report this seller and just raise to the company the issue.

It was really damage control because the agent started asking me what I wanted and I told them I don't want an $8 refund because it would make me feel like I traded 6 years of growing out my hair to look how i wanted for $8 so dont refund me. And then what do I want and I told them IDK i dont want any money from you because that would also be putting a price on my hair. I dont know how you put a price on it. I mean am I supposed to send them an invoice for like all the product am using to try to get this thing out and then sadly looks like its going to have to be cut out so my barber bill ... plus how much my hair was worth to me? Like what gonna offer me a free wig or something?

What the agents didnt get is that I was just trying to report the product so it didn't happen to anyone else. Sure if I ordered a $1000 TV from amazon and it showed up and was broken I would simply return it.

But what do you do when something that cost $8 ruins something priceless?

Last thing: does anyone know how to see the history of Amazon product pages? I was looking at the page again and it has a disclaimer ... and again this is for hairbands ... that reads:

"Disclaimer: While we work to ensure that product information is correct, on occasion manufacturers may alter their ingredient lists. Actual product packaging and materials may contain more and/or different information than that shown on our Web site. We recommend that you do not solely rely on the information presented and that you always read labels, warnings, and directions before using or consuming a product. I can't say whether the disclaimer was there or not before my complaint yesterday. It may have been and if so I didn't notice when I made the order. But if it's possible to check I would be curious to see, because it's a very odd disclaimer for a hairband.

Anyone have surprisingly helpful balloon twisting tips? I'll share one on tying the knot after inflating (not mine, ill link to the source) that seemed like it didn't make any sense until I tried it myself

Credit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzpMuO1BnJQ&list=PLkbFkY1_qG3jGNHOFlSxXBpgreM5ChyAq

I think everyone realizes pretty quickly that after you inflate the balloon and want to tie the knot (or make the end twist whatever the plan is) it makes it easier to tie the knot if you kinda burb the balloon and let some air out to give you a longer length of uninflated balloon to tie the knot or whatever your next step is.

This video recommends that you add one more step, after inflating the balloon but before making the not make a bubble down the balloon and let it go and that is where you make the knot.

When I watched the video my first impression was that just seems like an unnecessary extra step when you can just let some air out of the balloon anyways to create some extra room for the tie. But I figured I would try it and I can't explain exactly why, but it does make the knot easier to tie (especially in the context of doing something where you are inflating and shaping lots of balloons, it is easier on the fingers) and as opposed to just letting some air out and then catch it to create a longer uninflated portion for the knot, with this method you can make it really precise how long you want the extra to be because thats where you twist the balloon into the bubble, let the air out down to where you made the twist and catch it .. now you can do whatever you want.

Anyone else have tips to share either they came up with themselves or saw someone else explain?

[Self] Eris, 2023, charcoal and paper

For my cat Eris

Note: Submitting this post I got an alert that this sub does not allow digital stuff -- so to be sure here was the process: it was a charcoal drawing on the front of a Strathmore bristol paper pad that I then tore by hand and then assembled.

▲ 3 r/Roku

In case this helps anyone else, my Roku speakers are working again turning on the TV with the app from my smartphone and then using the regular remote

Quick version of how it started working again .. and this is not a fix, just something that you might at least try if you are having one of the issues from the update:

  1. Unplugged TV. 2. Plugged it back in. 3. Regular handheld remote would not turn it on (checked to see if it was charged, it was) 4. IPhone app however did turn on TV. 5. Wireless speakers/subwoofer immediately started working again without having to do anything else. EDIT: 6. The handheld remote also worked again once I had turned the TV on with my phone.

Again not a fix because none of that makes sense and I have no explanation, but just throwing it out there in case it might work for someone else.

▲ 12 r/Owls

In the middle of the night I heard what seemed like a person screaming outside, went out with a flashlight to investigate. I yelled are you a person? and whatever it was starting hooting. Showed my dad and he thinks it was a barn owl calling

EDIT: As a poster below points out this is likely not an owl and likely is the call of a fox. Apologies; not trying to spread owl misinfo!

Last night I heard some really loud screaming sound from outside. I thought it was probably wild animals fighting or some kind of bird, but it sounded enough like a person screaming (at least from inside the house) that I went out with a flashlight to investigate. I walked towards the sound and it stopped, so I walked back to my driveway, this is where the audio starts. When I yelled are you a person then I heard some more typical (?) bird hooting like sounds and was pretty sure now it wasn't a person and then more screaming. I think my dad is right based on listening to some barn owl call videos myself after, at the time it felt pretty alarming.
