For whatever reason you've been away for so long (year long holiday, burn out, family emergency, career change and shift back to mining, tried to unshackle yourself from the golden handcuffs only to want them back, etc).

For example, I can wear 2 of these merino Icebreaker 200 gsm RealFleece Descender hoodies:

I'm thinking the layering option is more flexible as I can wear the individual 200 gsm hoodie in spring or autumn conditions. Or I can shed 1 of the hoodies mid-hike as I perspire a little bit more or if I need to cool down a bit. Also, in winter, I can wash the 2 x 200 gsm hoodies separately and they will dry faster compared to drying a 400 gsm hoodie.

The main question is: can layering 2 x 200 gsm hoodies have the same heating effectiveness of wearing 1 x 400 gsm hoodie in the winter?

For backpack backs, trampoline systems are probably the shoe mesh equivalent. And changing to a dry shirt the equivalent to changing to dry socks.

How about a wet shoulder strap and hip pads? What would be a good solution to get them to dry with body heat?

Osprey is a design and features forward company as evidenced by their willingness to adopt things like trampoline backs and seam seal waterproofing.

Why are they not adopting newer fabrics?

2. You are now protected from water. The backpack can take splashes of rain.
3. Rain has stopped.
4. Put umbrella in water bottle holder.
5. Wipe the splashes of water from bag.

1. Break out the rain cover.
2. Cover the backpack with rain cover.
3. Break out the umberlla.

8. Put wet rain cover inside designated rain cover pocket. You now have a wet item inside the bag.

2. Pull stuff out of the bag.
3. Put the bag back over your back.

It's raining and you need to pull something out of the non-waterproof backpack with rain cover:

1. Sling the bag in front of you or set it on the ground.
2. Remove rain cover (wet).
3. Pull stuff out of the bag.
4. Put the rain cover (wet) back over the bag.
5. Put the bag back over your back.

The rain cover adds extra steps, but the setup is lighter (say 700 grams for bag plus 150 grams for rain cover for a 22 litre bag) compared to a TPU-coated waterproof bag which would be 1.3 kilos at 22 litres.
