great “bang for your buck” funky colorwork sweaters?

My husband is an absolute sucker for a fun, funky, colorful sweater. However, I’m not a super experienced colorwork knitter and he’s not big on stripes.

I’m looking for suggestions where you get the best “bang for your buck” on colorwork — in other words, designs that are simpler than they look. Maybe mosaic knitting? Intarsia color blocking?

I’m down to take on something a bit challenging — but I would not, for example, want to do stranded colorwork with more than 2 colors in a row.

baby’s first LC enameled cast iron…. for $100!

longtime LC admirer. I have several stoneware pieces bur have never pulled the trigger on an enameled piece.

I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I absolutely love the look of the Alpine Outdoor collection. the handles, the matte black enamel…. it’s such a fun design!

I live in Phoenix, home to the one and only Last Chance stores where Nordstrom sends their returns / final sale / retired items for liquidation…. and lo and behold, there she was for $100!

I have low self esteem and an unhealthy relationship with social media and IT’S YOUR FAULT

fiber arts social media is ~toxic~ because some people knit faster than I do and that hurts my feelings. people should get knitting advice from AI instead because AI won’t hurt your feelings like real people who actually know how to knit.

(no I cannot leave social media and interact with real life fiber artists. everyone else within a 300 mile radius of me who knits is ~old~ and hanging out with them would be embarrassing.)

WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME 😠

maybe it's because I'm a ~qUirKy xD millennial~ but why is everyone just trying to one up each other all the time?

people with a lot of finished objects (usually) aren’t lying

look, I understand why giant “finished object haul” / “what I made so far this year” type videos can rub some people the wrong way. for people who wish they had more time to craft, or work slower than they wish they did, I can see why those “what I made in my first year of knitting” videos with 5 sweaters and 7 tank tops and 10 accessories can strike a nerve.

but every time someone posts about them, the comments are FILLED with people claiming that “those people are probably lying and didn’t really make all those things.” this claim is baffling to me.

lots of people really do just spend many hours every day knitting/crocheting! I mean, the average TV time per day in the US is 3 to 4 hours. average phone time is 4-7 hours. many people (myself included) have jobs or school setups where they can knit/crochet while they work for many hours per day.

SOME PEOPLE JUST REALLY DO FINISH A LOT OF OBJECTS! maybe they’re very fast crafters. maybe they are mostly working with bulkier yarns and/or a loose gauge.

crafting isn’t a volume competition, and you don’t need to feel inferior to someone who makes more stuff than you. but that doesn’t mean that they’re lying!!!**

does this matter at all? no. does it aggravate me? yes.

** I’m sure that someone, somewhere, has lied about this. but it’s not a particularly easy nor profitable thing to fake.

2 free tix to the Chicago show tonight!

Anyone want them? My sister and I unfortunately can’t make it tonight but I’d love for the tickets to go to someone who can enjoy them (and let me know how the show goes! 🥹)

just a beginner taking a moment to feel proud of how much my tension has improved 🥹

working on my first raglan sweater and I’m just…. feeling proud of how much my tension has improved! I learned to knit in March and have been totally hooked since then.

my tension certainly isn’t perfect, but it’s crazy to see how much cleaner everything looks vs just a few months ago.

also, I know the stripey look of 8-ply yarn isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I find it sooo satisfying to look at! really enjoying the Rust colorway of Drops Cotton Merino.

my first finished garment: wrap top!

I learned to knit in March and, after a scarf and some baby bonnets, decided to take on my first garment! Took me just shy of 2 months.

The pattern is the Purl Soho Wrap Top in their recommended Sketchbook Cotton yarn (100% cotton). It was a really fun first garment because it taught me so many techniques along the way — German short rows, mid-project cable cast-on stitches for underarms, seaming, I-cord (standalone, attached, and applied), split hems.

The pattern is super clearly written, and the thick-and-thin texture of the yarn is very forgiving of beginner mistakes haha. Even though this project is knit entirely flat, I don’t notice much if any rowing out — whereas with my current project, a Sabai top with Drops Belle, I’m rowing out like crazy 😅

I’m really happy with how it came out overall! It’s such a cool feeling to wear something that you made from scratch! I definitely recommend this pattern — it’s extremely well-written and a lot of fun to knit. And Purl Soho’s support team was also super kind and helpful when my yarn got returned to sender due to a missing apartment number.

Onward!

knitting anatomy question — attached icord

Hello! I’m almost done with my first garment — finishing it up with icord ties / attached icord edging.

I understand how to do it, but I don’t understand the why behind the “knit 2 together through back loop” at the end of each attached icord row.

what is that last step functionally doing? 🤔 what would happen if you just knit all 4 regularly?

my first champion! 🥹 5 majors across 3 weekends

So excited — Obi wrapped up his CH this weekend with a WD/BOW major! (Pending AKC approval, of course.) That brings him to 5 majors (plus a single thrown in there in the middle), earned across 3 show clusters.

Both of us are very new to conformation. We took some handling classes starting in August, and our first show was at the end of September. No points from our first 2 show clusters, though one RWD — and lots of great learnings!

We hit our stride during our 3rd show weekend in January with 3 BOWs. Then 2 more majors during our 4th show weekend in February. And then rounded things out this weekend!

We’ve had a ton of fun and are grateful that the vizsla show community has been extremely welcoming and kind!

Also…. a lot of (well-intended, I think) people told me that you “shouldn’t” ever enter the AOH class. But we earned our entire championship that way! (And with a boring plain deerskin leather lead; no fancy braiding or beads, because I’m too frugal haha). So…. seek out guidance, but don’t take anyone’s advice as gospel. Do what works for you 😀

▲ 290 r/IKEA

We replaced the sad, uncomfortable, tiny sleeper sofa in our office/guest room with an expandable GLAMBERGET, and it’s the guest room solution of our dreams!

It feels like an old-school IKEA piece. Solid pine that’s sturdy and easy to stain or paint. Unique expandable design that simply doesn’t exist anywhere else at this price point. Clever, functional details like the under-bed drawers…. which also have removable trays that can be used as bedside tables or standalone bed trays!

I love it, our first guest gave it rave reviews, and the dogs love it 😂
