I'm not everyone, but I find it quite odd that someone could watch the entire show and absolutely hate it (or find Off Campus to be a better show in comparison).
I would genuinely like to know what part of the show was so disdainful to viewers. Was it the writing? The casting? The plot? What is so irking about it? I've seen stuff on X where people tend to diss the looks of the leads, but I know that can't be the only reason.
Edit: I also only thought of this after watching YouTuber Mina Lee's video, The Female Obsession with Gay Men. I've almost always enjoyed and appreciated her video essays and takes. She does very thorough research, and I always thought we agreed on most things, so seeing her not connect with Heated Rivalry was lowkey a hit. She did explain why, but it just caused my curiosity to implode.
Even if a show is really good, I will always have a fair share of criticism for it, so this is just a "I'm curious" question. Not a "you're not allowed to hate a show because I love it" FYI.
I think Violet plays favorites with her kids..
She loves Daphne the most (Daphne reminds Violet of herself the most?) She spent way too much time preparing her for marriage. They have the most mother-daughter intimacy since she is her oldest daughter and will quite literally experience a lot of firsts with her. I don't have much to say because their relationship dynamic was the most obvious to me. It's teh realtionships that founded her interaction with her other children.
Then Benedict (he's an impulsive and more untamed male version of her ig). I feel like there’s a weird similarity between them that Violet recognizes, especially with how independent and unconventional he is. She gives him a lot of freedom because she trusts that he’ll eventually figure himself out, just like how she might have. I didn't realize how much she liked Benedict, until his season really. He just seemed like the very typical middle child that no one gave af about cuz he wasnt the oldest or the youngest, so it was defintely interesting to see how their relationship played out in S4.
Eloise is interesting because I think Violet loves her a LOT but just doesn’t understand her. I think against popular belief. Theye're relationship is depicted with so much misunderstanding but to me that just shows how deeply Violet loves. She spends sooooo much time worrying about Eloise because she knows she’s different, but a lot of that love comes out as frustration because she doesn’t know how to mother her.
Anthony and Violet have too much of a power dynamic, with Anthony constantly having to live up to and being compared to Edmund. Mr. pseudo-partner, you could say. I don't think he's the favorite, but with him being the eldest, there’s definitely a bond she has with him that she doesn’t share with everyone else. She It’s a very intense relationship just based on how much they fought in S1, but seeing her call for Anthony back in S4 with the whole Benedict debacle says a lot about how much she trusts him as the oldest. And he really did become the Viscount he was meant to be. I liked their relationship progress the most throughout the Season because of that, and eldest children in general and most parent children dynamics are known to be the favorites and that is mostly because the parents experience all their firsts with the oldest and share memories that are unique to that child just becasue they felt it first.
Then I’d probably say Hyacinth because that is quite literally her baby. Violet seems to have the most uncomplicated relationship with her because she’s still at the age where Violet can just be her mom without all the expectations and emotional baggage she has with the older kids. And their relationship will definitely be dived into more durign Hyacinth's season, but for now, the youngest always ranks higher purely due to being the youngest. There might also be a feeling of guilt that she might be trying to patch up with Hyacinth and feeling more intensely as she was the child that didn't get to experience Edmund at all, since he did pass before she was born.
Colin feels like the child Violet loves but doesn’t fully realize how much he needs her. She sees him as the sweet, charming, romantic one who will eventually figure things out. The child you don't have to try at all with. The child that caused you the least pain while birthing and the child that dind't keep you up at night. She doesn't nag him, and Colin is always there with his sweet little self for Violet and Violet knows that. He's also the son that could get away with things without being punished. Colin is the son that will take care of Violet without a bat in his eye when Violet gets all old and wrinkly, and as sweet as that is, actions liek that even in real life mother son dynamics is nearly not enough to bag the favorite child spot, because there's nearly not enough tension in the dynamic and worrying to hold that spot.
Francesca is probably the one she understands the least. Violet keeps trying to project her own experience of love and marriage onto Francesca, when Francesca clearly experiences those things very differently. That tension between them is what distances Francesca even more and will prolly push it to the point where she might be convinced that Violet will just never get her. Violet can't necessarily be blamed either because to her, her love played out perfectly (minus Edmund's death) so why wouldn't she want that love for her kids, but where she fails the most is that not all her kids are carbon copies of her to have teh same expectations and wants as her. As much as their relationship might be distance. I think Franchesca is mor similar to Violet than any of her other kids. They fidget the same way, they have the same awkwardness, and introvertednes, and biggest of all, Franchesca's husband died just like how Edmund did, and they will always have that one thing to not necessarily bond but relate to as their own unique feelings with each other.
And Gregory... I fear this boy is simply a victim of being the forgotten middle-last child . I’m sure she loves him, but compared to the rest, he gets crumbs, and that's also because his season isn't here yet so cant be makking conclusions but for now, he's dead last.

I have never ever considered myself a fan of anything as much I've been invested in this damn show. Even for shows I've liked in the past, have I never gone as far as rewatchign every episode over 5-6 times. Never have I constantly posted my thoughts onto reddit as much as I have this. HR by far is the most invested ive been in and consumates me completely,, which makes me wonder how intense and deep of a fandom it is.
Before HR, I enjoyed Bridgerton. Not to the point of reading all the books an comparing, but enough to always wanting to read the book each season was about. But thats pretty much it. Would HR rank in the top 100 most intense fandoms of all atleast? In the TV SHow category?

Who were some of your favorite fancastings before S1 premiered and Hudson and Connor were chosen? Did you have anyone you were absolutely attached to and were disappointed after seeing the cast reveal?
Based on the books---
Shane Hollander to me felt very Liam Oh, or Alex Schlab, and that's mostly because of how often Shane is referred to as being pretty and boy like compared to ilya
Schlab also has a more swimmer-esque body type and looks quiet close to the book cover image of HR.
Liam oh is very pretty and know his acting (based on boots) would've delivered but don't know if he could've adapted very well to showcasing being on the spectrum as well as Hudson did.
Ryan Potter has come up quiet often, and made sense due to him actually being half japanese, but think he might've been too old to portray 17-18 year old Shane.
but he's also very fairly pretty boy with very defining japanese features (No offense to Hudson, but I can quiet literally tell Hudson is half Korean)
and hear me out on this one---but Yura Borisov for ilya Rosanov. I loved him in Anora. He's Russian and there was a time when he had some thick curly hair (unless that's a wig) He isn't as tall as book ilya, and he's 33 so that would'nt have worked but I can still kinda picture him.

Alex Libby was a popular one, bu the starred in 1 film when he was very young. He matches a lot of the physical characteristics of Ilya, but without the right acting it woudlve flopped.
Alex Libby is who shows up when you ask Ai to make the book character Ilya Rosanov come to life.
My favorite has to be Tom Hopper from Umbrella academy. Man's is just 41 damn years old, but my oh my ---this version of him with a little more bulk, a beard and more hair would've worked wonders. Especially after his role as Luther from Umbrella Academy.
There's also vasiliy Stepanov. 6'4 russian who looks like he came out of some damn book if not HR. but again--wayy too old at 41 but still fine as fuc
the bottom line is-- There isn't anyone better that couldve played Shane and Ilya than Hudson and Connor.

Is it just me or I see Shane and Ilya in the shows in a complete different universe than I do the book versions of them.
After watching the show and then reading TLG, some of the dialogue just often made me go---hmm Shane (Hudson) would never say that, or ilya (Connor) would not be acting like that
Like to me their adapted versions feel like a kind of mutated version of the characters. When I read the books, shane--in my head he looks more like Liam Oh, and ilya looks like Alex libby
I love the show adaptation and love what Jacob Tierney is doing with the books--but I see the show as stand alone at this point.
The fact that the trailer team waited until the Bvlgari event to use this image in the newest premier video of YAGA is hilarious to me.

Maybe I’m out of the loop, but I’m still waiting for Karan Johar’s authentic take and showcase of queerness in India. Yes, he’s directed Dostana and Student of the Year, but they’ve both had very nuanced “gay characters.” There’s also Lust Stories, I think, which I haven’t watched, but I’m unsure if it has any queer representation.
I’m not sure if it’s censorship, but there have been plenty of queer Bollywood films. We even have a show like Romil & Jugal. So I’m genuinely wondering what might be stopping Mr. Johar from creating something more mainstream and actually exploring queerness with a little more depth.
