Sleep problems + Weakness consistently triggered by exercise — looking for advice

I’m an 18-year-old male (180cm, 65kg) and have had recurring sleep problems for around 1.5–2 years. They started after an illness, but they come in phases rather than being constant.

The main issue is staying asleep. I usually fall asleep normally, but during bad phases I wake up 2–5+ times per night and sometimes struggle to fall back asleep. The sleep is also not really refreshing. I can also get brain fog, fatigue and dizziness after several nights of poor sleep. Valerian helps a bit, other supplements do not help.

The really strange part is the connection to exercise:

Running, football and strength training consistently make my sleep worse.

The effect can be delayed by 1–3 days and gets worse over time as i push through.

After 2–3 weeks without sports, my sleep improves significantly (usually 7–8 hours though still wake up once or twice per night).

Walking, hiking and very light activity don't seem to cause the same problem.

When I start exercising regularly again, I initially feel fine, but after several sessions my sleep deteriorates and fatigue/performance get worse.

My performance is also effected, only at the beginning i feel fit, then i'm weak and slow despite actually being athletic

I sometimes also experience prolonged muscle soreness, a tense/restless feeling, dizziness when standing and increased nighttime heart rate.

Bloodwork has shown relatively low ferritin, relatively low TRT (probably caused by bad sleep), and elevated eosinophils/monocytes.

It just doesn't make sense to exercise for me since i feel worse, don't make progress despite correct form and nutrition and sleep like shit. (Btw: I eat ~ 2400kcal without exercising and while exercising i eat ~ 2800 kcal per day)

Has anyone experienced something similar, where exercise consistently causes delayed worsening of sleep, while prolonged rest improves it? I’m really frustrated because after a year of trying everything, i quit sports because i feel better and can enjoy everday life again. But i can't play football with my friends anymore as it leaves me in a state of tireness, insomnia and weakness over time.

Was empfehlt ihr mir?

Any Derry City fans willing to help me out

Hello and thank you if you even bother reading
I am from Germany and starting a newsletter about football and its connection and correlation with geography/politic
For me Derry City is a unique example of a club who plays in a different country (not the usual country is too small/football level to bad like Monaco or Andorra, Swansea and more)
I want to dedicate the main theme of one of my first editions to Derry City FC. I would like to ask a few questions to any Derry City fan.
How connected is the club to the identity of the city?
Do people in Derry still feel the political history around the club today? - in any way?
You can of course tell about other things too like stadium atmosphere or whatever makes the club special in your opinion - what is it?
I would love to feature some voices in my newsletter soon
Thank you so much
