Uncle Sam/Samantha’s Nose
Still waiting for time to pass to know if it’s a boy or girl. These are one day apart, it looks creamy pink, then today it looks bluish!

Is Mr (or Miss) Blue Sky just weird or trying to tell me something? He sleeps at top of cage on bars or on the rope on swing with his beak hooked onto a bar. I’ve attached a few pics. His eyes are open, he heard me coming in with camera but still in place how he sleeps. They have perched of various heights and widths, wooden ones like tree limbs. They have other perches with toys built in, three bowls attached to inside of cage, a shallow birdbath too, and a 5”x5” fake grass mat that hangs in it, bird safe material. Why would he sleep hanging onto the side with his beak holding on too? I’ve had them 5 days, is he just not used to new home?
Here are the new kids Uncle Sam and Mr Blue Sky again, I spent an hour looking at examples online of parakeet “noses” for sexing, and telling age. Their leg bands are a metallic turquoise blue. Sam looks younger as it has darker stripes on forehead? Purplish noses so males? I guess I’m seeing white around nose holes too, so maybe they’re too young to sex yet. Sam’s eyes are mainly black, Mr Blue has a grayish iris showing more clear. They’re doing well, their first night here. Not hand trained but maybe someday. I enjoyed their chirping this morning I hope they’re happy!
Adopted two parakeets today! One looks like he/she has the sky painted on its chest. The other mainly white. I think I’ll call that one Sam (July 4th weekend after all, Uncle Sam lol). The other maybe Skye or something relating to clouds. I suppose there’s no way to know sex.
My bird had a chirp/squawk fit in its cage, I thought she was asleep but I wasn't in there. Went in to see what she was complaining about, and saw she has no tail feathers. They were on cage floor along with a few other wing feathers. Nothing bleeding, she is very quiet now. Just this morning she was splashing around her bird bath in the other cage and soaked herself having fun, then gobbled some chop I made with carrot, sweet potato, apple, blueberry, grape. Did she pass out and have a sleep terror? How long will she be tailless? She is 13-14 months old. Never had a Big Molt.
Photo is my bird getting a bath in sink. Adopted my 13 month old conure, breeder said its female, one month ago. Breeder severely clipped one wing, she said she does it when ppl buy her birds so it can’t fly all over a new home until it gets used to everything. My bird just flaps and falls to floor, and I don’t want it getting hurt, so it’s in cage most of the time. I have a large parrot cage where it is in evenings and bedtime, and a medium cage during much of the day so it can be in family room with us. I have a small playground thing with perch and ladder and swing, we let her out on that but, have to be right there in case she falls. She’s weird, doesn’t like toys, doesn’t sit in hand, do any play with destructible toys in cages. She will step up on finger and walk up to our shoulder and sit, that’s her favorite thing. And I taught her to “spin” for a piece of apple. But what can we do until the feathers grow back, to keep her entertained in cage? If she slips off my finger or shoulder she crashes to floor from that wing clip.
Mai Tai was dozing off and I had to fight her to get her on my hand to take her to her big cage to turn out lights for night-night. Had to use a bar instead. Did not want to go to cage-room!
It only took one evening to teach Mai Tai to “spin.” Well, one evening and some apple or dried cherry. Now she spins on command if she’ll get a bite of apple! This bird would sell its soul for apple. I have to super-supervise until her bad wing clip grows out. She’s sleeping a lot and losing feathers but otherwise acting goofy.
Video in comment. 13 months old. Have had her 1 month. Breeder hand trained her but gave her bad wing clip so only supervised out of cage time here. Nosy, friendly, loves riding on shoulders. Last week began sleeping a LOT and I’m giving her 11 or 12 hours with cage covered. Found actual feather and a few other feathers. Nippy when I pet her head now. Molting? Or something else? I’ve never gone thru that, my first bird.
13 months old, have had her 1 month. Breeder did a bad wing clip so she’s supervised while out of cage. Friendly, nosy, likes us. This past week started sleeping a LOT. When awake lots of preening and found a tail feather on floor and a few others. Is she molting or having some issue? I’m a new bird mom, haven’t experienced the joys of molting yet.
Still educating myself on birbs, as you call them! Mai Tai, my recently adopted goofball with the bad wing clip, is acting grumpy, nippy, and super sleepy. I’ve seen a few small feather on her mouth lately so picking or molting I’m unsure. There is a small red feather on her head, seen here. She’s also a mess here because I was feeding her apple, she loves it. I’m feeding her more snacks because she is sleeping so much I don’t see her eat often. I have lots for her to choose from. Harrison’s protein, other bird foods and treats, safflower seeds, fresh apple and blueberry (her other fave fruit). She doesn’t like the Harrison’s though. I try to give her as much darkness as possible too as I’ve heard that they need that. Is that red feather and sleeping/grouchiness molting coming on? She is 13 months old, I’ve had her three weeks. She’s usually a shoulder perching, ear nipping, head bobbing, nosy bird.
Mai Tai didn’t care for a bird shower, or a sink shower. Then I put this in one of her cages this week and she’s going to town. Guess she prefers baths vs showers!
Have had my girl for about ten days, friendly bird, hand trained, scared of toys and boxes and just about everything, wants to sit on shoulder all day and peck at my ear, lol. The breeder clipped her wings. Hard to see but the left wings look ok, the right side, the blue wing underneath is clipped so close you can't see it, and the green ones on top are cut straight across. She can't fly, she has to jump onto my hand, and if she tries to fly she goes out about 12" then straight thump to the floor. I hate to see it break a leg, so she gets carried but the poor thing can't fly and she probably wants to. Is this normal clipping? Will those cut wings grow back?
I was asked about the No No motion my new friend does sometimes, certain sounds make it take notice, it's just her being goofy I hope? I've had her a week so I assume she is getting used to a new place. This was the same night she did the head bobbing for the first time, and a side to side dance on my shoulder. She wants to sit on my shoulder more than anything else, more than toys even. That's us making the stupid noises, she was reacting to that I guess!
My 2nd Conure, I lost my first to some genetic issue. Picked this girl (?) up from a long established aviary a week ago, named her Mai Tai. 12 months old. Hand trained, friendly, matter of fact all it wants to do is sit on our shoulders. Seems scared of toys. So she has a funny thing about certain sounds making her turn her head back and forth like she's saying "no." Last night she did this repeatedly, quite a few times, has not done it since. Was she reacting to some music I was playing, or regurgitating? Nothing came out of her mouth during any of the times she did this.
