Looking for a few budgies, afraid to buy from the big pet stores as I hear they have bad breeders and the birds are often sick or have genetic issues/inbreeding. But I cannot find a rescue or anything near me. I'm in the Florida panhandle area. Anyone know of a parakeet rescue?
My budgie, about 4 months old, and his cage mate are let out to explore their bird gyms on top of cage, they come out every day for most of the day. I went to put them back in. My girl, Chubby, is easy to get back in, she's hand trained. Lemonhead, the male in question, is more difficult. I picked him up and had to hold him just a bit tighter, to prevent him from flying back to top of cage as I went to put him in. Lo and behold, he did just that, and I had feathers in my hand. He did an "ass blast" as if he had too much cargo and just ditched it. He is not hurt, just dumped his tail feathers. I wasn't pulling on his feathers in any way, just had my hand around him ice cream cone style. So my question is how long before they grow back? He looks like a yellow chick now instead of a budgie! They have a big cage with flat areas, and hammock, so he doesn't always have to balance himself on a perch, but still, I'll be glad to see some tail feathers again.
I'm coming over to the area in a few weeks, and I've been to England quite a few times. I have been to bookstores and am surprised to find no magazine racks/section. I always come home with a few tabloids from news stands or M&S but can't find a decent selection of actual magazines. I subscribe to a few (like Classic Pop) because I can't always find them here in the States, but our bookstores generally have large magazine areas of the stores. Am I missing something?
I believe the first two, one mainly yellow & other green, are female. Picture 3-5 are same bird, a blue budgie, and a bit older as baby bands are gone. Is that one a boy? I'm still confused on them. It's happy, sings, warbles, wants to play with others, but scared to death to be handled.
Posted this guy/gal the other day. I was at a large pet store chain buying a third parakeet (by the way, my two that I had are happier than ever with an addition, the new one is quite a warbler), and wound up with that budgie and a Conure, it was half price as they said they'd had it for six months and it's their policy (?) My hubs said he really felt bad about our last one dying so suddenly and felt bad about this one, the attitude of the store not wanting it because it has been there six month (hatch date October 8 2025). We had a conure some time before but it had some sort of a seizure and died after letting out several squawks late one night. We still had his big cage, and so we brought this character home, it's on its third day with us. It was very scared, didn't try to bite but avoided us or flew off perch when we came near, then would circle back to perch. Today I used one of those seed-treat sticks to get near it, and now it's taking Nutriballs and millet from my hand if I approach carefully. Loves to hold a Nutriball piece like an ice cream cone and eat it. It's been out on top of cage on perch/playground all day, has circled the room a few times but sits there or sits in window. Door to this room (home office) is kept closed. It acts like it has never seen real outdoors or sunlight and just stares out window often. A quiet bird but it screamed a few times when a YT commercial came on with frogs, lol. It's already happier, we can tell, it's preening, it's getting new foods, it's not keeping a side eye on me as much and is relaxing, I've been in this room with it almost all day, and my hubs keeps saying he's glad we got him.
Will be visiting from overseas next month and would love to peruse some antique/collectibles shops or rare/vintage book stores. I'll be around several areas of Cheshire and also in Manchester for some research at the library, any recommendations? For old books I like history, the local history there, maybe military history. I'm coming over for genealogy research.
This mark is on the reverse of a small copper item that was dug up near Manchester, UK. This is the clearest photo I can get. Object is unknown, but may have been attached to a small chest or decorative box. The green is patina. I cannot make out if that is an "A" or not.

Her new jail/home arrived today. She had my old Conure’s cage but was sticking her head and neck through the 1” bars. Then I had to put her into a medium cage on a stand with smaller bars so she wouldn’t get hurt. Her new cage came today. I don’t think she knows what to think.
That’s what I’ve named the new one. She was in my conure cage. I don’t have a conure anymore btw. Then I see her sticking her head through the bars, they’re 1” apart as it’s made for larger birds. She kept trying to escape prison, lol, and I was so worried she'd get a wing stuck, or really get hurt, so she’s in a different cage til the new one arrives. It’s one of those medium geodesic cages on a stand but she’s there til the weekend when I get one even larger than the conure cage, but with 1/2” bars. That’s when I called her Big Maude after a character on classic comedy the Andy Griffith Show, a weird woman who busted out of jail.
Day two was stepping up on my hand. Day three trotting up to my shoulder. Now she’s attacking laptop lol.
Have had him/her 3 days and it’s quite happy to be carried around. Was in PetSmart and had no intention of getting another but I couldn’t resist looking. The others all had a panic fit of course when I looked through their glass, but this one came closer to look at me. So…I bought it. The person that put it in its travel box held it ice cream cone style, I could tell it was very hand friendly. Isn’t it a cute little thing!
So I posted on another sub about Blue Sky wanting to bathe a lot, and how I bought another budgie, an Albino. Put them in separate cages per quarantine and Blue took another soaking bath, then died in cage and I’m bewildered. It was her water bowl so I couldn’t have prevented her bath. These pics are as yet unnamed new budgie. Will step up and likes attention but is nervous. Only been here a few days so that’s to be expected. Reddish tint to eyes, so albino? I think it’s a boy.
Blue Sky, just bought last month, young girl, died yesterday and I’m at a loss as to what happened. I brought home a new budgie so I had Blue Sky separated. She has taken a few baths in the bird bath and soaked herself to the bone. First time, she was shivering, I gave a/c of course, so I put her in a cloth and on a heating pad for a quick warm up. I was with her and making sure she was not getting too hot. She did dry off and looked fine, and back to her bite full self. She wasn’t a terribly friendly bird. Anyway today her separate cage was a disaster again. Water everywhere, she’d been soaking herself in water bowl, this cage doesn’t have the bird bath. I found her sitting soaked in her food bowl. Again I wrapped her in a cloth to dry and warm her. She seemed ok, kicking at me and obviously mad but feisty is good right? She was nearly dry when I put her in cage. I went out to get the mail, 5 min or so later I went back to that room and she was dead. No we don’t use Teflon, I wasn’t burning scented candles or spraying Febreeze, etc. Totally out of the blue death. I had a conure that died earlier in the year, almost 1am when I heard it screech like it was being attacked or something. It wasn’t 30 seconds for me to get to her room to see what the heck she was screaming about and it was on its back dead. I’m down to one budgie and I’m thinking if anything happens to him, no more. It’s a lot of work and money and time to put into creatures so dainty that they just die out of the blue. Sorry for being negative. I’m just so confused and upset with myself right now.
She is less than six months old and has not shown any hormonal behavior. But she likes sitting in food bowls. I have a large cage, two food and one water bowls. No happy huts or coconuts etc. If this is nesting behavior, what can I do? I can’t remove food bowls. Or is she just another weird bird?
Blue Sky landed on my Trevi Fountain Lego, while Sid does…something with his head on my books!
Ok, I’m at birdie limit. One more won’t hurt. He’s stepping up, not eager to but he will step on my hand often esp with millet. I am letting him out of cage to perch by window for hours a day in closed room. Blue Sky is too much of a coward. She likes out but it’s a chore to get her back in cage.
He (?) is more of a grey color than photos show. He’ll step up a bit reluctantly but he will nonetheless. It’s a pretty new roommate for my other two. Yes they have large cage and out-of-cage time in room with door closed. No more though I think three are enough for the cage. It’s a quiet birdie, chirps a bit when I play YouTube parakeet videos.
So is the new birdbath a hit with Mrs Blue Sky? I have never had a bird get this soaked! She looks pleased with herself.
I don’t think I’ve seen one as soaked as Blue Sky with her new bird bath. Does it actually look like she’s grinning?
