Throwaway because a creepy little guy keeps following my group and muttering about jewelry.

I (87M) have been in an on-and-off situationship with 'A' (2,700F) for a very long time.

For context, years ago I was told I was destined to inherit a family business.

Unfortunately, my ancestor made a horrible decision that got a lot of people killed and nearly destroyed everything.

Ever since then, I've had serious doubts about whether anyone from my family should be in charge of anything.

Because of this, I've spent most of my life wandering around, doing odd jobs, sleeping outdoors, and helping people anonymously. I figured everyone was better off if I stayed away from positions of power.

The issue is 'A'.

She's intelligent, accomplished, and frankly way out of my league. We've had feelings for each other for a long time, but she keeps encouraging me to stop running from my responsibilities and claim my rite.

Recently, things have escalated.

A small friend of mine inherited problematic jewelry.

We're now escorting him across several countries while being pursued by government officials, a giant flaming demon, armies upon ar.ies, and what appears to be every bad decision my family ever made.

I've found myself, little by little, acting like the leader of our group. People keep looking to me for decisions, and I've also learned that if I don't step up, a lot of innocent people may die.

If I actually follow through and take my rightful position, I'll essentially become the ruler of several nations. 'A' would likely become a co-ruler if she chooses to stay with me.

Part of me worries that after all these years of avoiding leadership, suddenly showing up and saying, "Hello everyone, I'm your boss," would make me look entitled.

Some of my companions think I'm being ridiculous and should have done this years ago, others have pointed out that I'm carrying around my ancestors' bad deed because I can't stop dwelling on family mistakes.

One of my friends (111M) keeps giving me cryptic advice instead of direct answers, and another friend (50M?) tried carrying the problematic jewelry for about five minutes and had a complete emotional breakdown.

So WIBTA if I stopped running from my family's legacy, took the job, and asked my girlfriend to give up paradise to stay with me?
