What do oil and gas workers use to communicate on the job?

I’ve been asked to buy some comms equipment and would really appreciate hearing what you guys are using to communicate in the field. If you can share the brand or model you use, that would be great.

I imagine the equipment may be different for onshore and offshore work, so please mention which one you work in.

Thanks!

What comms equipment do miners use at work?

For those working in mining, what do you use to communicate with your coworkers?

Do you use two-way radios, headsets, or something else? If you can, please share the brand or model you use.

I'm looking into communication equipment for my company and would love to hear what people in the industry are actually using and what works well in real-world mining environments.

Thanks!

What comms equipment do football teams use during practice?

During games, coaches usually wear headsets to communicate with players and other coaches.

But what about regular practice? Do you use the same equipment as on game day, or something different?

If you can, please share the brand or model you use.

Thanks!

What frequency band actually works on construction sites?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to buy communication equipment for my team, but given all the machinery and rebar on site, it seems like cheap 2.4G devices won't cut it. What frequency band do you guys use?

Also, once I get the equipment, do I need to adjust/reprogram the frequency after purchase?

Thanks in advance!

Do football teams use comms during practice, not just gameday?

Hi everyone,

I'm working on a research project and I've hit a wall with data collection. American football isn't very mainstream in my country, so I'm hoping to get some help from people here.

We all know that during games, coaches and players use communication systems to discuss strategy. My question is about daily practice - do you guys use communication devices during regular training sessions? Also, different countries have different regulations on frequency bands, so what frequency band is commonly used in your area?

Hope someone can help me out, thanks!

What UHF bands are you using for touring?

Hey everyone,

I'm taking on RF coordination for an upcoming multi-region run for the first time, and I'm hitting a wall trying to lock in our shop's standard rack frequency templates.

Between local DTV packing the spectrum and trying to keep track of different regional regulations, I feel like I'm playing 3D Tetris just to find clean airwaves.

I really want to avoid spending two panicked hours scanning at every load-in. For the seasoned RF techs and touring A1s, I'd love a quick sanity check from the field. If you can mention which country/region a band applies to when you reply, that'd help a ton since regs differ so much:

What are the primary UHF / Sub-1GHz frequency bands you are actually firing up on a daily basis? (e.g., standard 470-608MHz UHF, 400-470MHz, 800/900MHz ISM, etc.)

What function is assigned to each band in your typical rig? (e.g., main wireless vocals, IEMs, crew intercom/comms, wireless DMX, or utility audio feeds)

If you tour internationally (US/EU/Asia), what are the go-to default bands you rely on that work almost everywhere without hassle?

Any advice or real-world setups you could share would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Curious how frequency coordinators handle sports events

Hey everyone,

Been curious about RF management at sports events lately. With more people bringing wireless devices, coordination seems like it's getting harder every year.

Do frequency coordinators typically lock in specific bands for specific roles - like refs, coaches, media, announcers - just to make allocation easier? And if so, what bands do people usually end up getting assigned to for each role?

Would appreciate any insight from people who've dealt with this on the ground.

What is the best headset for tree workers?

Hey everyone, looking for some advice on headsets for tree work.

Main thing I need is communication, either something that connects to my phone or has built in comms.

Been looking around and noticed there are a few different styles out there (pics attached). Seems like people use all of them but not sure which actually works best up in the canopy.

What are you guys running? Any recommendations?

What comm headsets are you guys using and how much did you pay?

Hey everyone, a couple weeks ago I posted asking whether comm headsets are actually worth it for firefighters. Got a lot of helpful responses, so thank you for that.

Been researching since then, trying to find something that fits our budget. David Clark, Setcom, and Firecom all seem like solid options, found real customer cases on YouTube and they look legit. Only problem is they're a bit out of our price range.

Some other brands like Rugged Radios and SYNCO, I can only find product pages or blog posts, no real customer stories or reviews. Hard to tell if they'd actually work for our use case. I tried reaching out to their sales teams but haven't heard back yet.

Anyone have experience with these brands? And if custom orders are required, how much more does that usually add to the cost?

Firefighter comm headsets, essential tool or just collecting dust?

Been reading through a lot of firefighting forums lately and noticed there's a pretty big split on comm headsets.

Some people say they barely get used, just sit in the truck collecting dust, maybe used for casual chat on the way to a call. Others say they're essential for hearing protection and team coordination on scene.

I've noticed the same divide among departments in our area too. Not everyone has them, though budget is probably part of that.

We recently got a grant and are looking at investing in comms equipment for our crew. Before we pull the trigger on anything, wanted to get some real-world feedback from people who actually use this stuff day to day.

Any opinions or experiences welcome. Thanks.

Why has nobody fixed this obvious flaw in film comms systems?

Genuinely losing it over this. Been on enough shoots where the master headset in our comms system just dies or glitches out, and the entire crew loses contact instantly. Zero warning  - battery dies or it bugs out, and boom, everyone’s cut off until someone manually re-pairs the whole system.

But motorcycle group intercoms have been using mesh tech for a while now. Someone drops out, the network just routes around them automatically - doesn’t affect anyone else.

So why do film-specific systems still need a master headset at all? These things aren’t even cheap, and somehow this hasn’t been fixed in years. Is it actually a technical limitation, or are manufacturers just not bothering?

Any cheap but decent off-road headsets?

What's up guys,

Got a 2,000-mile road trip coming up and I really don't wanna listen to my soft top flapping the entire time. Looking for a cheap pair of headsets for me and my passenger.

Budget is max $300 for the pair since they'll probably just sit in a drawer for the rest of the year. Just need something so we can talk without screaming over the wind, plus Bluetooth for music.

I was looking at the SYNCO Xtalk XMax, but reviews say the audio delay is pretty bad. Anyone actually tried them?

Open to any other recommendations that don't suck. Looking for the best bang for my buck. Appreciate any help!

Wireless vs. Wired comms for a 4-seater UTV?

Hello fellow riders,

I just picked up a RZR and I’m trying to solve a pretty big issue here. My kids sit in the back and always complain about the noise. Honestly, they just get super bored since they can't hear and see much. I really want them to fall in love with off-roading, but right now the noise is just killing the vibe.

I need a solution that protects everyone's ears, lets my wife and I talk to them hands-free, and lets us blast some music to keep them entertained while we cruise.

I’m currently torn between getting a full wired intercom system like Rugged or PCI, or just buying 4 wireless headsets like Cardo, Sena, or SYNCO.

I’m heavily leaning toward the wireless headsets because they just seem way more convenient, but my main concern is the music quality and connection reliability. I’m terrified that the music is going to sound like a tin can and constantly cut out or lag. The wired setups look rock-solid, but man, outfitting a 4-seater with any brands is crazy expensive.

Any parents here running a 4-seater? What are you guys using? Let me know if I should save the cash or just buy once cry once on the wired setup.

Appreciate any advice!

Need help with audio setup for a 13-person gaming room

Hey, I’m setting up a small gaming room, about 20sqm, 13 people all on headsets.

  • 4 guys need a private voice chat to talk to each other. ZERO background music.
  • 8 guys just need to hear the background music. No talking, no comms.
  • 1 host needs to be able to talk to everyone and run the game.

I'm looking at intercom headsets but how do I actually hook them up to a mixer? How do I split the music feed so only the 8 guys hear it while keeping the 4 guys in their own private loop? Do I need a massive digital mixer with a ton of aux sends or is there an easier way?

Anyone done something like this before? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Anyone using tour guide headsets in noisy factories?

Hey everyone,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I figured some of you might have experience with this.

We take customers through our facility fairly often, but it's so loud on the production floor that people can barely hear the guide.

My boss ask me to find a solution similar to tour guide headsets, but one that can handle a loud industrial environment. Ideally, visitors would be able to talk to the guide as well, not just listen.

We'd probably need enough for around 20 people. Has anyone used a setup like this in a factory, warehouse, plant, or similar setting?

Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

How do FOH engineers talk to backstage without wearing a headset?

Hey everyone,

Quick question for the crew here. How do your sound engineers communicate with stage hands or backstage staff without wearing an intercom headset?

Our FOH guy needs to monitor the house mix, so he absolutely refuses to wear an intercom headset. Honestly, even a single-ear setup is a no-go for him because it ruins his spatial awareness of the main PA.

However, the backstage crew all wears intercom headsets and needs a way to talk to him.

Is there a clever way to route the comms line directly into the console or a local monitor/mic setup at FOH? Appreciate any tips or workarounds you guys have!

Need lightweight wireless intercom headset

Hey everyone,

Many wireless intercom headsets use an over-head design, but my team members feel them heavy and uncomfortable after long use. So I’m looking for a lightweight and comfortable option instead.

I’ve found a few options so far. Has anyone here tried these? Or any good recommendations would be appreciated.

We’re looking at upgrading our team comms setup right now, so I’m trying to get real-world input instead of just spec sheets.

What have you used that looked fine on paper but turned into a headache in real production?

Would appreciate any honest experiences. Thanks in advance.

▲ 2 r/drones

Hi everyone,

We recently used DJI Air 3S to shoot a live event in Bali, but when the drone takes off, our intercom headsets start disconnecting, and the video transmission also becomes unstable. This is really frustrating because it seriously disrupts our workflow.

We suspect the issue might be interference. After checking their operating frequency, we found that they both operate on 2.4GHz.

drone specs

headset specs

Is it possible to resolve this issue without changing the headset? We would really appreciate any technical insight or practical fixes.

Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone,

We recently did a shoot in Bali for a live event, and we ran into a strange but serious issue.

When the drone takes off, our intercom headsets start to disconnect, and even the video transmission becomes unstable. This is really frustrating because it seriously disrupts our workflow.

We were using:

  • DJI Air 3S drone
  • Eartec intercom headset
  • DJI SDR video transmission system

I’m currently suspecting the headset might be the issue, since we didn’t have this problem when using Hollyland in a similar setup. But I’m not sure what’s actually causing it.

Has anyone experienced something similar with DJI drones + intercom systems?

Would really appreciate any technical insight or practical fixes.

Thanks in advance.
