I’ve been reading Gamow’s “Thirty Years That Shook Physics” and may have found a mistake.

The book is published by Dover, and it’s one of their historical reprints. He claims in the book that a positive and negative electron charge in close proximity (the Hydrogen atom) has a positive potential energy, but then a few equations later renders the same value as negative rather than positive. Since most electrostatic potential energy calcs assume 0 energy when charges are infinitely apart, the potential energy of the hydrogen atom should be negative. I’ve found a few other mistakes, too, and have decided that Dover Books may be publishing the errors because the text is a reprint of a historical text. Is there a place somewhere online that hosts errata of physics, or frankly, any books? It would be nice to know that I’m not just being ignorant in my evaluation of a famous physicist’s text.

Death row inmate sues Tennessee, claiming state denied private confession before execution

"Hood said he has served as a spiritual advisor during executions in Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama and Florida, where he says private confessions were allowed before executions."

"The lawsuit also alleges Hood was denied access to serve as Bane’s spiritual advisor because of his public positions on the death penalty, abortion and homosexuality."

Brave Browser is always freezing up on my Windows 11 computers.

Plus, the browser has a really hard time with any kind of interactive website, and that’s on my Win 11 computers, my iPhone, and my iPad. It routinely fails to render website buttons or other components that are necessary to complete a web form. Are the creators aware of these issues, and if so, are they doing something to fix them?

I think it’s sad that Donald Trump is the best Republicans could come up with.

What’s happened to the Republican Party? I honestly don’t even think it’s right to even call these people Republicans. Being a Republican requires a modicum of competency at least.

I don’t see how I can ever trust someone who worships YHWH.

Everything in the Old Testament shows that YHWH was an evil, pagan god, and probably had more in common with “Satan” than whatever loving god modern Christians say he/she/it was. Jesus was a YHWH apologist, probably because he had to meet the people of his time where they were as worshippers of an evil god. If he had just come out attacking YHWH, he would have died much sooner and not made nearly as much headway.

The idea that anyone can worship such a wicked being while also claiming to believe in love, forgiveness, and compassion speaks of extreme spiritual and emotional corruption.

Hence the evil Evangelical churches we have today. I don’t see how I could ever trust any of them about anything.

AvP (2004) was rated PG-13?

Whose brilliant idea was it to rate the movie PG-13? I was watching the beginning of the film when a guy left topside gets caught out by the three predators, and in the killing blow when the predator decapitates him, the movie instead cuts away and shows two streams of blood landing gently on the freshly fallen snow nearby. At that point, I immediately opened IMDB to see if the movie was rated PG-13 like I was afraid it was. It’s as if the director was afraid he’d make the predator blush. Was it a studio decision to lower the rating? Was it the producers, or director? What happened with this thing? The movie just feels too warm and fuzzy.

Is there a good source for techniques to convert infinite sums to finite functions?

I’ve been reading through Griffith’s Intro to Electrodynamics 4th Edition, and in one example, he points out that an infinite sum of the form

V = Sigma [ (1/n) * e^(- n a x) * sin(n a y) ]

can be replaced with

V = 1/2 Arctan [ Sin(a y) / Sinh(a x)].

Obviously there are some constants missing in those equations, but I included the gist of the problem.

Is there a reliable way to swap in finite functions for infinite sums like this, and if so, can you point me to some good sources? I get that there aren’t always ways to do this, but Griffiths felt that it was commonplace enough to encourage undergrad students to try it for themselves.

What would it take for all the scientists of the world to go on strike until all the world’s nuclear weapons have been removed from their launchers and transported at least 10 miles away for permanent storage.

Living with Schizophrenia means constantly being told by everyone that all you ever do is make mistakes.

You haven’t been truly gaslit until you’ve been gaslit while living with Schizophrenia. The reason for this is because when you try and call people on it or tell someone else about it, all they do is tell you your illness is acting up. It’s no different than people cramming a funnel down your throat and then shitting into it. I‘m constantly being reminded of why people living with my condition off themselves.

Has the political scene of Asheville changed much since Helene happened?

I ask because a conservative woman approached me in a bookstore and told me that the hurricane forced all of the artists to leave town. I would think that’s a shame if true. I’ve never been a rich enough Democrat to live in Asheville, but I’d hope the politics haven’t changed too much. So what are the politics like these days?
