SCX10.3 Builder’s Kit - What to Upgrade?
Hey Folks!
Looking to build an SCX10 starting with the builder’s kit. I spent some time looking at upgrade parts online and realized I could easily spend $1500+ on one of these, but I’m hoping to keep it closer to the $500 range (I’ve already got electronics, so I’m not including that in the budget).
Any recommendations for hop ups with the best bang for buck? Anything from the kit that’s good enough to leave alone? If there’s another kit that would be a better starting point I’m open to suggestions
I’m going for capability over scale realism, and I prefer straight axles to portals.
Thanks!
The Marketplace Special Lives On!
Thank you all for your help answering my silly questions and helping me get my 1980 CB750F back up and running. It’s been sitting since 2018, so it’s time to put some miles on this thing!
Fuel/Air Options for 1980 CB750F?
Hey folks,
Noob DIY bike mechanic here! Currently working on getting my CB750 back to a rideable state and I’m at a bit of a crossroads. I pulled the carbs apart, cleaned them, and replaced most of the rubber and it starts! That’s about where the good news ends. Somewhere along the line, one of the previous owners discarded the stock airbox and decided to put pod filters on the stock CV carbs. Now I know that it will never run correctly with this configuration, but it seems like there are a few different options for solving this problem and I’m torn on which route to take, so I was hoping I could get some opinions here.
- Find a factory airbox, keep the keihins
This might be kind of tricky. I haven’t found anything on marketplace or Craigslist around me. There are a few on eBay right now, but they all seem to be either broken or hacked up to varying degrees. I don’t mind spending the money on one in good condition, but I don’t love the idea of buying a beat up one and chasing vacuum leaks with JB weld. It also wouldn’t exactly fit with the look of the bike - it’s a cafe build and the factory box would look a bit goofy (looks aren’t my #1 priority, but they are on the list of priorities)
- Find an aftermarket breadbox style air filter, keep the keihins
This is one I haven’t seen mentioned much online, but there are companies out there that make them (cognitomoto is the one that popped up the most for me) and I just don’t know how effective they’d be at creating the vacuum required to operate the carb.
- Make my own airbox, keep the keihins
I’ve seen exactly one person do this, and they’ve claimed great success and longevity. That being said, this could combine all the headache of option one and option two, or just flat out not work.
- Murray’s Carbs, ditch the keihins
This definitely seems like the easiest option, but also the most expensive. I’m not opposed to the price, and I’ve heard lots of good things about Murray’s, but not a lot specifically about people’s experiences one the DOHC 750s. They also have some pretty stellar customer support as well, from what I gather.
Anyway, if you made it this far, thank you for reading my massive wall of text. Any opinions or options I haven’t listed are greatly appreciated.
Is the spring that goes in here typically included in a carb rebuild kit?
This is my first time fixing up an old bike so apologies if this is a super softball answer. In the process of tearing this carb apart to rebuild it, the spring between this plate and the diaphragm got away from me. Been searching for about an hour but I think it’s in the grass, so I’m not hopeful to find it. I already ordered the rebuild kit, should be here in a week or two. I’m thinking those springs in the top right corner of pic two are the right ones, but I was hoping someone here could tell me for sure. Also for future reference, does this part of the carb have a name?
Thanks all!

The seller couldn’t get it to run and priced accordingly so I took a gamble. Got the carbs clean and she fired right up. Electrical is all good, just needs brakes and an oil change and she’ll be ready to hit the road for the summer!
Fury running 3S in it’s natural habitat
Love this truck to death on 2S. 3S is a bit of a handful
Had a nice rip with the Kraton and Fury this evening. Glad I got it in before it rains for the next week!
It’s been a few months since I’ve had a chance to take my race buggy out. Decided to take the day off and head down to Madness. Definitely rusty but it felt good today!
