Question for Nucanoe U10 Owners

Hey all. I’m a new owner of a U10. I am building it out pretty simple, but definitely want a blackpak for the added rod, tackle, and possibly battery storage. I have seen recommendations online for the 13x13 size but not entirely sure why.

I understand the 16x16 would be too much due to the width of the sternwell, but unsure why the 13x16 would be an issue. It’s my understanding that’s the hinges for the lid can be swapped to the short side, so it can be used long ways. Anyone run into any problems with the 13x16 or foresee any issues? My only thought is maybe you cannot push your seat back far enough to balance the boat without blocking the swivel? I am open ears to any recommendations.

Meaningful difference between paddles?

Hello everyone. Just bought a Nucanoe u10. I now need to buy a paddle and ideally getting one in person instead of ordering so I can get out on the water on Monday. The only two paddles my local shop has in stock that are long enough are the Bending Branches Angler Drift ($140) and the Bending Branches Angler Ace with versa lock ($280). I’m leaning Angler drift because it is much cheaper and I’m tight on budget after buying the yak, but keep hearing a paddle is a buy once cry once purchase. I have held both in hand and although the Ace is clearly lighter, I am skeptical that weight is going to make a big difference. Is there really a meaningful difference between the two when in use? Is it really that big of a difference that it’s worth double the cost?

Additional: I plan to motorize with a terrova eventually but probably not until next summer sometime due to budget restraints. I am not a tourney guy, just fun fishing. Would like to dip my toes in that eventually as well in the future, but probably not until motorized.

Maximizing “beginner” Kayaks

After long debate on spending more money via selling my boat, I’ve decided against it and now want to get into a ~$1000 kayak. I will fish it completely bare bones outside of a black pack to hold gear and rods until saving up for other equipment. I’m mostly considering the bonafide RS117 and Old Town Sportsman 120.

My question to you all is how far can I build these out over time without compromising safety and performance? Can I motorize? Anchor systems? Anything else? If you have maxed these out send some pics too! I’m really curious how far these kayaks can go.

Lasfit vs OEM Bed Mat

Hey all. I am a first time Tacoma owner since buying a 2024 Tacoma SR Dual Cab 4x4. Looking into getting some basics for the truck such as all weather floor mats, bed mat, and maybe some other small items if you have any recommendations.

First thing I’m heavily debating is if I should go with the OEM bed mat or something like the Lasfit bed mat paired with the tailgate mat as well. I like the idea of not screwing down the mat which leans me towards the OEM, but also feel like tailgates tend to take a beating so a tailgate mat might be nice. Any pros or cons you’ve experienced with either option?

I will be towing a small aluminum boat, hauling my gravel bike around to new areas, and doing yard projects including moving some large rocks around, mulch, etc. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Convince me to make the plunge.

Hey everyone,

I’m on the fence about selling my current setup (a 14’ jon boat with a bow-mounted foot-pedal trolling motor, plus a small sit-in kayak) to fund a tournament-capable fishing kayak. The kayak world really intrigues me, but after doing some research, I’m worried I’m trying to force my fiberglass/aluminum boating habits onto kayak fishing.

My absolute favorite way to fish is picking apart shallow cover—docks, lily pads, laydowns, and stumps. In my jon boat, I stand on the deck and constantly micro-adjust my position with the foot pedal while casting.

In order to do something similar it seems I have to get a heavier kayak like a bonafide PWR where I can mount a spot lock trolling motor to the front. But seems like im just recreating a plastic version of my Jon boat. Big, heavy, has to be trailered ect. So now im also considering keeping the boat and getting something a bit more simple like an RS or RVR model to supplement my jon boat instead of replacing it.

Am I setting myself up for disappointment based on the style of fishing I enjoy? I really wanna join the kayak scene, just feel a bit lost. Looking for a push. What do you love about kayak fishing? What do you recommend I do? Why should I make the plunge?

Standing and Working a Bank

Hey everyone. Right now I have a small sit-in kayak that I use on ponds and a 14’ jon boat for anywhere with a boat ramp - mostly inland lakes and some smaller rivers.

I’m considering selling both and putting that money toward a tournament-capable fishing kayak. One of the biggest things I’m trying to figure out is how practical it is to stand and fish effectively from a kayak. With my jon boat, I can stand and use a bow-mounted trolling motor with a foot pedal to work down a bank. In my sit-in kayak, standing isn’t an option at all.

For those of you who regularly fish standing up from a kayak, what are your strategies for controlling the boat while working down a bank? Are you using a pedal drive, spot lock, a motor, stakeout pole, or something else? Is it realistic to stand and fish while maintaining boat position, or do you find yourself sitting most of the time?

Also, what gear or setup would you recommend to make standing and fishing efficiently from a kayak possible? Thanks for any advice.

Megabass Rod for Weightless Jerkbait

Hey all. I am on the hunt for another rod.

My favorite pond technique is throwing a 4 or 5 inch caffeine shad on an EWG hook. It’s surprising heavy due to the salt, but still needs to be finesse enough to work the proper twitch action. I used to have a St. Croix 7’1” MHF that was money for the 5 inch and I would toss the 4 inch on my jerkbait rod. When I was introduced to P5 rods the St. croix rods were sold.

My 110 stick gets the job done for the 4 inch, but I cannot find a Megabass Rod I like for the 5 inch. Thought my dark sleeper could get the job done, but it’s way too slow. I am hoping to find one in the MB P5 or Triza lineups as I really enjoy them. Triza seems most intriguing because as life has gotten busy I find myself doing a lot more impromptu bank fishing than planned out boat trips.

Current arsenal: Triza Aello, Triza Dragoon, P5 Flyssa, P5 Addermine, P5 110 stick, P5 dark sleeper, P5 FMJ, P5 Jungle 7.

Would love any insights on the Triza Stym Palides, P5 Daemos, P5 x bites, or any other recommendations.
