Who is this bulldozer?
Who is the ruffled looking bird who tried to run off my chickadee? I thought he might be a juvenile Jay but that doesn’t jive with my Google searching.
My June project
We pulled up our essentially dead grass, planted about 75 water wise, mostly Plant Select plants, and converted the sprinkler system to drip irrigation. The only thing we lack is installation of a large rock or 2 and a solar powered fountain for the birds and bees I hope the plants will bring. The plants have been in about 2 weeks and so far we should only have to replace 2 of them. Can't wait to see what it looks like in the next couple of years :)
Fledgling having a nap
No one ever comes to my feeders. They buzz all around but never land. Well, I finally got one and he is the cutest little fatty. He stayed there for several minutes having a nap. I was over the moon
My poor plants have transplant shock- I think?
Over the past couple of weeks my husband and I cut up and flipped our grass, laid cardboard, overlaid a couple of inches of soil, and planted about 75 waterwise, mostly Plant Select plants. We face southeast-ish and the front yard gets pelted with sun for a good 8-9 hours. I have been hand watering every few days to try and keep the babies hydrated, but many of them are looking very sad and wilted. I'm hoping this is just transplant shock and I can get them through it, but does anyone have any wise words or encouraging advice for me?
1 year progress
Awful before picture acknowledged, I am proud of my change and progress. My décolletage is coming back! 45 pounds down and hopefully about 10-15 more to go. Everything feels so much better.
Is this potato ready for hilling?
This is my first year, trying potatoes. They are all starting to come up, but one has really taken off. It’s probably about 6 to 8 inches high, which I’m reading is the time I should hill them. Is it as easy as piling dirt around all those leaves? Seems counter intuitive so I wanted to check.
The transformation has begun
We rented a sod cutter today and flipped about 700 square feet of dying grass. I feel like I've been run over by a truck- that is NOT easy work. Now we are trying to find enough cardboard to cover it all. But, the hardest part is over!
I bought her (I think) 2 summers ago and she has exploded from about 1.5-2ft high to this. She's got a new leaf about to unfurl as of a few days ago. (She's Ursula because of all of her aerial roots/tentacles 😄)
I bought this girl from a big box store in August of 2022 not knowing what kind of plant it was or how to take care of her, or what she could become. Her trunk is awfully wonky probably due to my lack of knowledge, but she just keeps getting bigger and bigger. 2022 photo included for comparison 😄
Both are the same place on the same day, in the same soil and watered at the same time. One lost its flowers, one didn’t. What gives?
I planted these from roots I ordered last fall. Over the winter they popped up to about what you see here, and since then they have not done any more growing. Some leaves have started yellowing. Are they done for this year? Stupid winter.
