Rainy weather and feeders —Should they come down for rain?

I've noticed that water definitely gets into the ports, increases overall fluid level and obviously affects dilution scheme for the nectar. So I'm wondering what everybody does when it comes to rain and hummingbird feeders

Chestnut-breasted Coronet at Fundo Alto Nieva, San Martín, Perú

The hummingbird feeders at Fundo Alto Nieva always create amazing opportunities. This Chestnut-breasted Coronet paused for a few seconds, revealing its beautiful mix of iridescent greens and rich chestnut tones.

Despite their tiny size, hummingbirds are incredibly fast and territorial. Photographing them requires patience, quick reflexes, and many failed shots before capturing the perfect instant in front of the flowers.

Please welcome our new mod, u/9voltgorilla

9voltgorilla has been one of our most active members who has shown a lot of passion for hummingbirds and love for this community.

For years now, I have been this sub’s only active mod. When I became a mod, the community had less than 10k members. We are currently at over 90k members and I need help! I’m thrilled that he is willing to help breathe some fresh air into the community.

Please join me in offering him a warm welcome!

Allen’s and Anna’s foraging salvia plants. 20260414.

Got busy and never posted other photos from that day except for 6. I was sending a photo to a friend and found like 10 unedited into from that day. Hope you like this. I adore them.

Proud owner of a fledgling hummingbird daycare facility

I’ve been hearing incessant peeps from the apple tree in my front yard for a few days, and I suspected it was a fledgling demanding food. After hours of watching, I found the peeper - and delightfully, got to witness this Anna’s hummingbird feed her fledgling.

Seriously, after almost 5 years feeding these hummingbirds, this is my first time spotting a mom with offspring. I am thrilled 🥹🥰

My first visitor this year

I usually see only females so I'm pretty excited to see this fella.

II’m so sad and I just need to vent a little…

Last Spring, a hummingbird nested in our star jasmine which grows on our front porch. She had two fledglings. She came back again this year and built a nest right next to her old one (which we left up), and had two more fledglings. We were so happy she came back! They were born about five days ago and we were elated with joy when they popped their little heads up. And Mamma bird was used to us, and never fled when we would pass by. It was like she felt our porch was a safe space.

But I noticed yesterday that she wasn’t around, which was odd. But I waited and waited. Finally, tonight, a whole 36 hours of not seeing her, we decided to check the nest only to find it empty.

The only explanation is that a predator found the nest.

Look, I’m a grown ass man. I served in Iraq twice. I have been through a lot in my life. I’ve been wounded, I’ve lost friends, and I’ve most all of my family. My mom died when I was 24. I am covered in tattoos. I go skydiving and motorcycle riding for fun. And most people consider me a pretty stoic and “tough” guy.

Despite it all, I am heartbroken. I have been fighting back tears for the past half hour…albeit unsuccessfully. I know nature will do what nature does, but fuck…this one hit me hard. We have become attached to the mamma bird, and to her little babies over the past two years. So losing this year’s babies is…well….I can’t find any other word than heartbreaking.

That’s all. I just needed to put my grief into words.

edit: Thank you all for your kindness.

This is lil mama

This one hummingbird follows me around and her babies too! Have been following me around until they learned how to hover n fly less like butterfly 😂😂😂 now they’re just around sometimes but less and less daily. She likes getting my attention and showing me her nests or just will hover in my face and likes to sit in branches near me n scratches her head 😂😂 also my wife got me a new lens for my iPhone and these are the results. I dig it.

Feathers of enemies on his Talons.

This is Frank the Tank. My bully. He is loud and ferocious. All he does is kick ass all day. I feel bad for all the other little hummers.

Why no birds?

Have had these feeders out for about a week now and still haven’t seen a single bird. Is it too soon, or are they maybe the wrong color? I’ve noticed most people seem to use red feeders. I live in Portland, Oregon. Is it already too late in the season for the birds?

Appreciate the advice!

Pox or avian keratin disorder?

This little one has been in my yard for 6+ months like this. Every time I put a feeder back up after a month or two, they’re instantly back at the feeder, so I take it down again immediately.

AI says it’s not pox and it’s keratin. I’m skeptical, clearly.

Coming to the experts here for help if you have any thoughts.
