What’s my best approach to prepping and product to use for base/top coat?

A little backstory; Found this beauty spontaneously while looking for a plant for the lady. Stumbled upon A HUGE nursery. While wondering through rows and rows of plants, the Bromeliad energy caught my attention.
This was about 3mo ago. We replanted it with some orchid mix we had leftover. Filled the cups with water and then left town for a week. Ever since then it’s been slowly dying on us.
We’ve been pretty hands off with plant care. Not sure if we messed up re-potting? Maybe with watering? We were draining the water and refilling every couple days. Then tried waiting for the cups to dry and then water. To now we’re scared to water lol
What would be next couple of caring steps?
