Artist Info

Found this 30 years ago, along with several signed and numbered prints, some large, exotic plants, and even an (apparent) antique south asian door, in an estate trash pile in Raleigh, NC.

Condition is as-found. It is hanging in a stairwell such that if I take it down I'll never get it back up, but I don't recall seeing anything on the back, last I looked.

Portrait of My Father. Artist info?

1959, age 21.

I think by a friend of my father's elder half-brother. My father was a lifelong resident of Raleigh, NC. Whether a live stting or from a photograph, I can't say, but my money is on photo.

Said half-brother was a professor of classical languages at Kent State in Ohio by late 1960s-early 1970s, but I don't know where he was in 1959.

Signature has me flummoxed... Raymond? Raynard? Ragnard? Ragmond?

Thanks.

Mat and Float Questions

Have a 17.75x23.75 charcoal on paper drawing I want to float mount so as to preserve signature and other details.

However, desired hang location is tight, so a narrow frame with minimal distance (almost edge to edge) between drawing edge and frame are needed.

An instructional video I watched demonstrated a "flat" method I'm considering.

Both portions of a cut mat were used, perimeter and window, with window portion cut slightly smaller than the artwork.

If I am to have the edge of the drawing close to the frame, this would require a very narrow mat cut. What is the absolute minimum mat width for a good cut?

If this is not feasible, what is the best approach for a relatively large sheet of (flexible) paper?

If it is feasible, or for future reference:

After a casual look at a few supplier websites, I see no option for ordering both pieces of a custom cut mat.

Is it customary to provide both pieces with order or is this a special request situation?

Is there a special term for this that I may be overlooking in the specification menus?

Sturdy, no-bulk attachment between round cotton cord and flat elastic?

Level: Advanced Beginner/Practical Sewist/Cheapskate

Method: Hand (machine not currently set up)

....

I am modifying the drawstring on some cotton pants to add some stretch, by splitting the cord and inserting a length of elastic. I want to use only what I have on hand.

I have done this successfully on several garments with existing drawstrings. For those with fairly wide or stretchy channels, I have added a doubled length of 1/4" elastic, fray checking all the ends, sandwiching the cord between the elastic ends by +/- 5/8", and securing with a combo of adhesive, then hand stitching using a ball needle.

I've also used a similar method for wider ribbon ties with a single layer of wider, heavier elastic.

Those have all looked great and performed beautifully,

but this project is proving trickier, at least for me.

There is an appx 1.25" gap between channel openings on the front of the waistband, so it is not practical to replace drawstring entirely with elastic, which I would not prefer, anyway.

The pants were acquired at a thrift store, with one cord end pulled into the channel. When re-inserting the cord, I discovered that the channel is very, very tight, with no room left to layer, sandwich, or wrap an elastic-cord connection....and the cord itself is comically short for its job.

However, the cord is original to the pants and is clearly made from the same fibers. It is a very stiff, natural fiber, almost like lightweight canvas, and the label indicates Turkish cotton.

The cord is maybe 3/16 in diameter. The elastic I have on hand is 1/4 in flat, and very flexible. I have been able to pull doubled elastic through the channel with reasonable effort.

Joining cord and elastic without adding bulk is a puzzle, though. But I like a challenge, and would rather find a way than buy something easier to work with.

How would you approach this, if there were no other materials available?

Thank you.
