I find it kind of funny comparing Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette to Jeanne du Barry, the film with Johnny Depp.

The two films explore French royal court life at roughly the same point in history but from differing points of view.

Coppola’s film is of course from Marie Antoinette’s POV while the other film is from Jeanne du Barry’s POV.

For reference, if you’re not familiar with the Jeanne du Barry film, it’s the character played by Asia Argento in Coppola’s film(Sidebar: it’s funny to think Rio Torn and Johnny Depp have played the same historical figure in different films at roughly the same point in said figure’s life).

The beats in Jeanne du Barry that reach this melodramatic crescendo are depicted quite stoically and offhandedly in Coppola’s film, precisely because they’re insignificant for Marie Antoinette even if they’re life defining for Jeanne. The whole “Louis XV and his concubine” subplot is played for laughs in “Marie Antoinette”.

In Jeanne du Barry, there’s this major turning point in the film where Marie Antoinette addresses herself directly to Jeanne, since we see Jeanne overjoyed that a high-ranking member of the court deigned to address themselves directly to her. The implication is she no longer feels herself an outsider despite her history as…well…the king’s concubine. Of course, what’s left unsaid in the Depp-starring film is depicted quite pointedly in Coppola’s when Dunst almost comedically says she’ll never say another word to “That woman” again.

Then of course, Jeanne du Barry(the film that is) reaches an emotional climax when Louis XV dies, since it’s clearly an emotional turning point for Jeanne herself. On the other hand, Coppola depicts Louis XV’s death in an almost deadpan manner as if to say “Ok, the king is dead, the concubine is dismissed from Versailles, so let’s get on with it and now finally explore Marie Antoinette’s life as Queen of France”.

Assuming you have a successfully flashed drive, is there any software that will directly play back UHDs on a computer (both Mac and Windows).

I know flashing a drive enables MakeMkv to access UHDs, but will programs like PowerDVD for windows or Macgo bluray player on Mac also be able to directly play UHDs assuming the drive is flashed.

Meteor shower

Hello:

What would be the best place to watch the meteor shower this evening that’s not too far from the center of Prague but still has minimal light pollution? Does one have to go completely into the countryside?

Why is there this notion that being an expat is a cop out for people who couldn’t make it in their own country?

I was lurking in a thread on another subreddit that was specifically about how unbearable the expat scene in Berlin has become.

At some point, there was a comment about how all the creatives and bohemian types in Berlin were fourth rate rejects who couldn’t hack it back in NYC/London/Paris.

So I’m guess I’m just wondering why this conception even exists. A lot of artist and bohemian types have indeed been priced out of cities like NYC, LA, Paris, etc. but that doesn’t mean moving to a more affordable place makes them a “reject” who couldn’t “make it” in the cultural epicenter.

The concept of artists being priced out of major cities implies it’s so expensive they don’t even have the opportunity to try and fail there first before moving to a “second tier” city. Besides, I’m not sure the reason an American creative type would move to Europe is simply because they “couldn’t make it in NYC or LA”. London and Paris for starters aren’t going to be easier places to “make it” as an artist. A lot of Americans are just drawn to living in Europe. It’s not always a question of failing at life in their home country.

Sorry for the rant.

P.S. I have no doubt the fourth rate artists and bohemians in Berlin do in fact exist, but I just take issue with the general idea that expats are always rejects in their home countries.

The greatest American or primarily US-based director(which includes Hitchcock and Chaplin) to never have a single film obtain an “above the line” Oscar nomination.

There are loads of great directors of course who fulfill this condition if we include people from outside the English-speaking world, but it gets harder when discussing only American directors because there’ll often be a screenplay or supporting acting nod in their somewhere in a director’s filmography like with Nicholas Ray.

That said, I don’t think a single film by Abel Ferrara, Samuel Fuller, or Jacques Tourneur(French but U.S.-based) ever received an “above the line”nomination. Maybe Monte Hellman too.

Why do “neighborhood cinemas” survive more easily in European cities than they do in the U.S.?

Central Queens, where I grew up, has been gutted of so many of its smaller neighborhood cinemas catering to a customer base that lives within walking distance or maybe 1-2 neighborhoods over at most. Kew Gardens Cinemas and the Cinemart still exist, but they’re on life support.

And this phenomenon isn’t limited to the outer boroughs of course. Lincoln Plaza Cinemas also suffered a similar fate several years back. Of course the single-screen cinemas like the Ziegfeld, the Beekman, and the Thalia are all gone too, but those are a somewhat different kettle of fish.

There seemed to be one big wave of cinema closures at around the turn of the millennium and another one at some point during the 2010s(not to mention the pandemic closures too).

However, my experience is in the larger European cities (not just in Paris but also in places like Vienna, Berlin, or even Prague) “neighborhood cinemas” seem to survive and thrive to a degree they don’t in American cities. The local joint screening the new Almodovar film for the local denizens still seems to be a thing in larger European cities.

Film Forum and Metrograph are fashioned as destinations for people from all over the tristate area, so they don’t really fit the definition of “neighborhood cinemas” in my opinion. They’re cultural institutions serving the entire metro area rather than their immediate neighborhoods, and this seems to be the case with most of the thriving independent cinemas in New York.

Don’t get me wrong. Film Forum, Lincoln Center, Angelika, and Metrograph are all great to have, but they still essentially function like cultural institutions serving a 20 million strong metro area rather than cozy neighborhood haunts.

If the digital revolution never happened, could there conceivably have been, at least eventually, an analog home video format that rivaled Blu-ray/UHD in image quality?

What do people think? It’s just something to think about. Obviously, it was perhaps already made possible in the form of people with actual projectors in their homes who collected 16mm and 35mm prints, but that was never going to be viable for mass distribution.

Do INFx types see love and relationships differently from other types?

I could be wrong, but I feel INFP and INFJ are the only mbti types who a priori include meeting ‘that special someone’ as part of their life plan. INFP and INFJ have a lot of differences due to having different functions, but this is one trait they seem to have in common. Perhaps this idealism often leads to disappointment in romance?

Most other mbti types seem to have a more “banal” view. They plan to “get married and have kids” a priori, sure, but the whole “meeting the love of my life” thing, if it does happen for them, is something they genuinely weren’t planning on and it comes along in a “I don’t know what hit me” fashion. Non-INFs don’t enter the dating market with a “I’m gonna hopefully fall in love and find the one” mindset but rather with a “Let’s see if I can find a suitable partner” mindset.

This is just my impression.

Watching the World Cup in Prague(Riegrovy Sady)

I know the beer garden in Riegrovy Sady seems to be a popular spot to watch the World Cup, but was today a random day where they just didn’t feel like putting it on? It seems odd, given they’d likely draw a crowd with Portugal and England playing.

Hey: Have they turned on the Portugal match in Riegrovy Sady yet? 😏

They weren’t turning the match on for the first half for some reason, so I’m just debating if I should go back there for the second half assuming they eventually turned it on.

Sorry Portugal-Uzbekistan match* 😉

Hash check error with Verbatim 43888

So I recently purchased a Verbatim 43888 and attempted to rip an entire 4K UHD disc.

MakeMKV did the entire backup without any pause or failure in the middle of the ripping process.

Then the backup finishes and I’m told all files in the disc have a Hashcheck error, not just say 1-2 files.

Only afterwards I realize it has a LG drive inside and needs to be flashed to properly read and rip 4K discs.

So could this hash check error simply be caused by trying to rip a 4K disc in an unflashed drive? I’m just wondering why it would even go through the hour-long process of backing up the whole disc only to mention the hash check issue when the backup is done.

Hello:

I was just wondering if anybody knows of a relatively central place where I can just plop down and watch the PSG vs Bayern Munich match tonight without needing to worry about reservation shenanigans (I’m looking at you Brit Bar).

Thanks🙏
