A recent post asked for understanding for being such a recent convert and feeling late to party.

A lot of us poured Comfort and Belonging syrup all over the newbie (as is to be expected (Welcome Newbie!)

During my having fun with the whole idea, I made a comment- based on others bringing up so many good recommendations, that 'I was going to be distracted from what I'm supposed to be doing and listen to some Prince music instead.

1999 was a damn near complete copy/paste. 8)

I swapped out the old one and later found the blinky-blinky lights code was still saying '22', '22'.

Pulled it today and found the part that was supposed to hook up with the rotating throttle shaft had a worn down look to it.

This truck has a 200 mile (freeway) journey come tomorrow, I'm looking to catch another replacement at NAPA on the way...

Truck in a 93 C2500 w/ the 5.7 TBI (gas).

It had started dipping out on the freeway and shutting off at red lights.

I replaced both the Idle Air Control valve (reset/calibrated it during install) as well as the Throttle Position Sensor.

During initial diags I found the wire's insulation around the TPS plug was gone, might have allowed two or more of the bare wires to touch at some point.

Replaced not only those two items but go the 'kit' with the Plug Ends as well, crimped them on cleanly.

Tested the TPS, seems to get voltage as well as respond to Throttle Plate position.

On a side note: if we leave the TPS unplugged, the Idle at rest comes down and the Motor is unlikely to 'drop out'. That said, under a more than cruising load, going up a steep grade for example, the power will drop on a very predictable 5 to 7 second cycle, then resume normal operations.

One last thing, just to muddy the waters, the Knock Sensor has been unplugged for a while now, way back before these symptoms appeared. (I'm sourcing the 'real' AC Delco part this week...)

Seems it is. every time I've been trying it lately it can't be found.

In any case, here is S02E03 and her insights on a first watch.

Following a relisten to 'I'm Yours' due to another thread, I let VLC play and the Discography is current alphabetical.

Hit & Run, Phase One came up eventually and I'm currently rediscovering 'Like a Mack'.

Many that stuff's both Funky and Groovy.

Truck is a '93, TBI 5.7

Following up on an earlier post I'd inspected the three wire plug and found the Insulation on all wires as they exited the plug to be gone, exposing the copper wire itself.

Truck has been ideling high around 1700 RPMs for awhile now with no obvious vacuum leaks discovered.

This morning it started throwing the recent tantrums; stumbling, surging, black puffs of unburnt gas from the tail pipe.

I'd wrapped up the exposed wires, even unhooked the Battery for about 15 mins.

Reconnected battery, Ign ON, I Pressed the Gas Pedal down three times in a row, then Ign OFF.

Did this a number of times, even threw in a 'turn it off w/ the pedal matted all the way down'.

Didn't help, truck still stumbling, shifting too high and too hard, black puffs out the tail pipe .

Finally I unplugged the TPS loom from the Sensor and low and behold the truck is drivable now.

Idle fell to a more respectable 14k, no stumble, no surging.

I haven't located my AWOL volt ohm meter yet to check resistance and voltages.

Truck sometimes has been stumbling and misfiring.

Puffs of black smoke when it's at it's worse from the tail pipe. (I take it to be unburnt gas.)

Right now it's causing the Transmission to shift hard and hunt for the right gear (it's a 3 speed + OD) on the Freeway.

Prior to it acting so bad, the symptom was temporary.

It would start fine, after sitting in the grocery store parking lot it would act up awhile, then settle down.

Once we get it home I'm going to start looking at

- Are we getting good Spark?

- Good Fuel?

- Vacuum Leak somewhere?

Backstory: about 6 months ago the Intake Manifold Gaskets were replaced with new Mahle brand parts & less than a month ago I swapped out the Fuel Filter down there by the chassis rail.

I'm looking in too many different directions right now...

This is from a DIY pov, I'm more than capable of many things including replacing almost anything thats held onto these Vans with Nuts & Bolts.

Has anyone actually pressed in Bushings themselves?

In case I end up getting the complete Control Arm Deluxe, any good brands to default to?

(I'm likely to be shopping on RockAuto btw...)

I'm in the process of better understanding the 1993 C2500 I'm currently riding in.

Online info is proving difficult to absorb on the little cell screen.

My questions are related to hooking up a cable to something like a laptop and gathering real time output from the engine as it's running.

Anybody know if things like Oil Pressure, Knock Sensor, Fuel Injector status, any & all of it can be read, or is it just static error code logging?

This is a film for the Summer season, best seen on the Big Screen. (I didn't go IMAX, but it was in an old movie palace whose Balcony had been converted to a separate screen. It's one of my favorite spots, the seats are banked real steep, the curved screen is huge & right in your face.)

I'm having trouble keeping the shaft from spinning as the Nut is a Capture Nut type.

I just came across this beasty this morning, I took a few mins to scan for obvious red flags, didn't get to spend enough time looking in & under though.

From what I can tell it's Vanagon GL base with (instead of a pop-up), it has a hard shell roof extension.

Adventurewagen seems to be from an outfit out of Coastal Northern-Northern California (Ft. Bragg)

As for the 'bad motor', I'm assuming headgasket/overheating. An Upgrade/ Motor Swap wouldn't be out of the question.

Fixing stuff doesn't scare me in the slightest, but I'm spotty on Air/Watercooled Vans in real life.

My number one curiosity is can the Syncro be adapted to the Diesel bell housing? I know most everybody defaults to a flat Subaru motor, I'd like to drop an Audi Bubble-block 2.0L in there. I have a lot of learning-up to do...
