Experiment: using AI to find the joints in a figure, then suggest seams and re-pose the arms before printing

I make ModelSplitter, a free browser tool for cutting models into printable parts with pins (modelsplitter.com). This clip is not something in the app yet. It's an experiment I ran this week and I'd like to know if it's worth pursuing.

The AI looks at a figure and guesses its skeleton: shoulders, elbows, knees, neck, and which part of the surface belongs to which limb. From that it could:

- suggest cut lines at the joints, which you'd adjust before cutting (the orange rings)

- bend a limb before you print, here both elbows, with nothing else moving

Honest limits: on this alien it found the arms and legs cleanly, but it didn't separate the head from the jaw, so turning the head twisted the face. On a figure standing straight in a uniform the limbs came out blotchy. Bends also crease the inside of the joint a little. And it needs a GPU, so unlike the rest of the tool it would mean uploading your model, only when you choose it.

Two questions for people who split and print figures:

  1. Would seams suggested at the joints save you time, or would you redo them anyway?

  2. Is posing a limb before printing something you'd use, or do you just find a model already in the pose you want?

I think I've cracked two colour printing on a single extruder – added an inlay cut to my free browser splitter

Right, I'm properly excited about this one.

A while back I posted my browser tool for cutting STLs into parts and loads of you tried it and told me what was broken. Thanks. Fixed since then: 3MF files load, models don't land off screen any more, and it works on an iPadPro (still better with a mouse).

But the big one is new. It's called an inlay cut. You draw a shape on the model with the band or rope tool, set a depth, and it presses that shape into the model like a cookie cutter that stops part way. You get the model with a recess in it, and the piece that came out as its own part, with a bit of clearance so it presses in after printing. Print the piece in a different colour, push it in, done.

No AMS. No pausing the print to swap filament. No painting. Any shape you can draw, any colour you've got on a spool. Eyes, logos, badges, panels, teeth, whatever. I've been doing this by hand in Blender for ages and it took me an evening per eye. Now it's about ten seconds.

The pic is a frog I've been testing on. I managed to cut out his belly, now we can print that in a cream colour. Next the eye comes out from under the eyelid without taking the lid with it, which took some doing.

Honestly I think this could change how a lot of people do multi colour. Most of us have one nozzle and a drawer full of colours. This uses both. Runs in the browser, nothing gets uploaded.

Go break it and tell me what happened.

I built a free browser tool for cutting STL/3MF models around their details—not just with flat planes

Hi everyone,

I’m a 3D modeller, and I built ModelSplitter because I wanted an easier way to divide detailed models without taking every file into Blender or ZBrush.

It includes several ways to cut a model:

  • Draw a freehand cut that follows details such as collars, armour and clothing
  • Wrap a movable band around the model
  • Paint the area you want to separate
  • Make conventional plane cuts
  • Automatically divide oversized models to fit your printer

You can then add matching alignment pins or magnet sockets and export the resulting pieces.

It runs locally in your browser, so your model isn’t uploaded. The current public beta is free and fully unlocked:

https://modelsplitter.com

I’d really appreciate honest feedback from anyone willing to test it on a real model—especially difficult organic models. Did the cut work, could you export the pieces, and what was confusing?

Disclosure: I built ModelSplitter. I’m sharing it to find testers and improve it, not pretending to be an unrelated user recommending it.
