sandiasforall.orgAn AI chatbot is talking to and recording our youngest students throughout the state and nobody asked parents first
If your kid is in kindergarten through second grade in New Mexico public schools, an AI program called Amira is talking to them and recording their voice. And your school probably never asked you. Of the parents tech policy expert Ifeoma Ozoma has spoken to, not one was notified or given a way to opt out.
Ozoma says the real value for this private company is the data: terabytes of voice recordings from five-to-eight-year-olds, with no state privacy protections. Amira’s CEO claims the company “never ever” shares data, but a Willamette Week investigation found its Portland schools contract collects place of birth, disability information, even migrant status, and allows disclosure whenever “required by law.”
Wanna do something about this? Download the opt-out form and turn it in soonish, because assessments start in the first 30 days of school. You can also show up to the SFPS board meeting July 30th and demand Amira be made opt-in. And share this with another parent.

youtube.comUPS Store "throwing away" donations intended for Catopia Cat Cafe
For the past 3.5 years, the UPS Store on Wyoming has been throwing away packages misdelivered to them but clearly intended for one of their neighbors, Catopia Cat Cafe. There's no way to know exactly how many donations were withheld, but Catopia knows for sure that one patron has been donating $64 of cat food a month during this time period with no idea that it was being thrown away. These packages were clearly addressed to Catopia, but the UPS Store did not try to call them, contact them online by email or social media, ask Amazon to redeliver, or even walk across the street.
Catopia is a great little cat cafe that's managed to adopt out hundreds of cats every year. No one deserves this, but doing this with donations is particularly egregious.
You can find more info about this on local news, but I don't think I'm allowed to share links from them.
I live alone but I also cook in bulk and freeze foods regularly so I'm constantly playing tetris with my containers. I'm about to purchase a new fridge and am trying to pick the best style. I always wanted an ice maker but I'm thinking now that's just sacrificing valuable freezer space. What would be the best design (side by side, french door, top/bottom) of fridge for someone who really uses the freezer a lot but also likes to put large items in the fridge
