Malware risks and ways to deal with it? (2026)
Since the incident with infected AUR packages and now lately infected Rimworld mods on Workshop I’ve started to wonder how likely it is to get actual Malware on a Steam Deck (considering how most are targeted at Windows users but even that is changing as Linux is getting more popular) and Steam Deck itself not having a anti-virus system like Windows defender the best defense for SD used it seems is "don’t get infected" and not "how to prevent it further when it’s breached" I wanted to ask:
What happens if you do get infected?
What are usually the signs a Linux machine like Steam Deck has malware on it and what can you do to fix and prevent it happing again properly?
sudo rm -rf failsafe?
So there’s of course the danger of running rm -rf as sudo without file path bc then it could delete root, but afaik some distros have a failsafe to prevent you doing this on accident and I wanted to ask if SteamOS also has a failsafe to prevent you to accidentally delete root?
Using Distrobox as —root on steamOS gets error?
Edit: I noticed the typo on 2. however after typing the command correctly I get the same error as in 1.
Using Distrobox as —root on steamOS gets error?
I want to test something and wanted to try and test it as Root and I tried using this command in the official Distrobox website first:
\> distrobox create --image your-chosen-image:tag --root
But:
in first pic I did this exact line with Ubuntu 24.04 (have to test it on a Debian distro) but I just get this error
here I tried to make a non-root Ubuntu create and it worked and then tried to run the enter command as root but get the error it doesn’t exist
here I did the same as 2. but this time ran without —root and here it worked completely fine and expected (but not as root)
Using Distrobox to install CodeMeter Runtime on SteamOS?
(Already posted in https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamOS/s/EyKGfCckcl but it has been slow on comments and hoped maybe here someone had the odd knowledge regarding This Endeavour)
So I’ve made the funny idea that how fun it would be to make Steel Beasts run on SteamOS (specifically Steam Deck) and while I got the game/software itself to run I need to have CodeMeter Runtime which isn’t (afaik, if it is please tell me it’ll save my ass so much) on Protontricks as a component and also not available on Arch as it only has .deb and .rpm packages for Debian and Red-Hat distributions respectively.
I wanted to give up at this point only to run across Distrobox and wondered how easy it is using this to get Debian (or Debian related, Ubuntu should be the best candidate here?) environment and use CodeMeter from there as anything run/made from Distrobox is integrated to the host and therefore anything in /home?

High fidelity Tank Sim *except Steel Beasts*?
Are there high fidelity Tank sims (as in DCS levels of Sim and fidelity) except SB?
I’ve run into the issue with SB that it may not work on Linux at all due to CodeMeter (the only supported distros are Debian and RPM and I use Arch) and while I heard of GHPC (and I may be wrong here) didn’t the Devs specified of GHPC that they’ll only cover the Fulda Gap scenario and no other time frames, tanks, nations and scenarios?
Look at loadout?
In the role selection screen I can see if you move your mouse fast enough you can see the actual Info card of all the other weapons but it disappears so fast that you can’t even read it, is there supposed to be a official way to check what each loadout comes with or you forced to look it up from the wiki if you wanna see the info besides the main weapon?
Massive breakthrough (and a conundrum) (Steel Beasts Linux Attempt)
After a dozen attempts of trial and error I’ve made Steel Beasts boot(-ish) on SteamOS (fork of Arch Linux) and next part of course would be to get the CodeMeter license runtime (at least that’s the one I need, if not someone correct me) but I’ve realized a interesting issue:
Do I take the Linux Version of CodeMeter or the Windows version?
The situation is I needed to use Proton layer (essentially simulated Windows environment) to get Steel Beasts work and now I’m not sure if I need the Windows version of CodeMeter as SB is running on a Win Layer or the Linux version as the OS is still Linux?
Is my fleet good? /s
my Hound build…
…that’s it, replicate step 1. x82 times (actually ship count btw with Fleet size by DP)
Win
My Flagship because I want to be tiny bit fancy ✨)yes you can defeat Threat/Shroud with it too that’s why pseudo Jet)
just be ready for like 50%-80% casualty rate
Unknown Wine prefix/path location?
So I’ve made a mistake as I wanted to try and execute a .exe installer on SteamOS however instead of adding the installer as a non Steam game and using compatibility layer I accidentally just right clicked the .exe and execute through Wine, now I’m not sure if the install has worked or not (and preferably delete what was installed and do it correctly) but for that I need to figure out where Wine has now installed all these files and I was lucky enough to at least make the picture during install and how the file is called (eSim Games) but from there I am kinda lost
Tank Simulator DCS Style? *preferably Linux
Is there a high fidelity Tank simulator in the style of DCS world? I want to move away from WT but not go to more arcade style tank games like WoT?
*Now I have heard of steal beasts and it seems like exactly what I want…if there wouldn’t be the issue that it’s Linux compatibility is unknown especially the way it usage is of CodeMeter and afaik some DRM dongle?
Chronological franchise run?
So I’ve become invested into the world building of PM and the frankly Soul annihilating gameplay and story suffering (especially of Lobotomy Corporation) and I wondered:
How feasible is a Chronological run of every game, going:
LoboCorp > LoR > Limbus (preferably blind).
Or is there something I must be aware of if I plan to do this blind and most importantly, how much time would it take me to pull this off?
Dust accumulation?
Has anyone experienced any issues regarding dust buildup inside a Steam Deck yet?
While at a friends place I left the Deck docked for multiple days over night outside the case and his place was kinda dusty so while I am was able to clean off the surface dust I’m actually not sure how it’s about Vents/Fan/Cooling?
Or what’s usually the time frame (if at all with SDs Fan design) for dust to buildup inside that it starts to cause issues?
EVA foam dust creation question
While personally not using it my friend does use it for cosplay (I just use a cut slab as a stand cover for my Steam Deck) and I’d rather not have foam dust be inside the internals of the Steam Deck nor my lungs and I’ve seen a lot of posts how sanding can cause huge dust creation but what about cutting or static use and storage?
Does EVA degrade with simple handling or is it just sanding/friction specifically that causes EVA dust to happen?
