"Take Me Home, Country Roads" is becoming the US Soccer's version of "You'll Never Walk Alone"
Although we have a good claim to "You'll Never Walk Alone" (it's written by two guys from New York), "Country Roads" might just be the most wholesome American song ever written with roots all over the country and perfect for US Soccer.
It was written by a married couple going to a family reunion while driving through Maryland. They wrote the song about their love for country roads in Massachusetts and Connecticut and planned it for Jonny Cash (born in Arkansas, arrested in Mississippi, arrested again in Texas, lived in Tennessee). John Cash was also stationed in West Germany when they won their first World Cup.
Then swooped in John Denver. A guy from Roswell, New Mexico, grew up in Arizona, Alabama and Texas, lived in Colorado and died in California.
Denver loved the song so much after hearing it they burned the midnight oil dialing it in and performed it for the first time the next day in Washington DC. They tweaked the song while taking the train up the I-95 coridor passing through Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and recorded it two days later in New York City. And of course the song took inspiration and focused on West Virginia.
So a song tied to over 17 states and first performed in the capital.
But did Country Roads go platinum? Yes, but not quite when you would think. It lingered for 46 years on the charts before going platinum in April 10, 2017... the same day the US and Mexico submitted their unified bid to host the World Cup.
