Ufin v1.2.0 - beta is out!, this release brings an Optional Liquid Glass UI with True Refraction, Experimental 1080p Streaming, a Who's Watching screen and More!

Hello everyone!

For those who haven't seen this project before, Ufin is a native Jellyfin client for the Nintendo Wii U, yes, you can now watch your favourite movies on your wii u via jellyfin!

The project started as an experiment to see whether the Wii U could be a viable media machine and how far I could push free ai tools with complex coding tasks. Now, v1.2.0 is here, bringing a bunch of new features, UI improvements and playback options!

DISCLAIMER: This project is VERY HEAVILY AI-ASSISTED

Before getting into the features, I want everyone to know that most of this project's code was AI-generated. I built Ufin using the free tiers of Claude and ChatGPT to write the bulk of the code.

While I don't have a ton of programming knowledge yet, I contributed by choosing the architecture, designing the UI, deciding which features to implement, making the custom bgm and app icons, and, testing and debugging on real hardware and cemu, to get as close to a seamless experience as possible. still, i'll need info from you all on how the app is to use, so, GitHub issues are open.

I spent a lot of time making sure the app was ready to publish, testing as much as I could on my setup and working through issues that came up along the way.

I'm still learning programming, and I look forward to eventually being able to write complex applications entirely on my own. For now, this project has been a way to learn, experiment and build something I couldn't find before, and make it how i liked it.

The documentation and code comments are AI-assisted as well. My English isn't perfect, and I wanted the documentation to be as understandable as possible so other people can contribute to the project or create their own forks without having to decipher every part of the code.

I'm sharing this because I want to be transparent about how Ufin was made. AI did a lot of the coding, but the project still required architecture decisions, feature planning, testing, debugging and plenty of work to get running on actual hardware. it's amazing to see what modern tools can do for our favourite console!

Now, With that out of the way, here are the FEATURES!!

Ui and Customization

  • Toggleable liquid glass UI, featuring true refraction.
  • New animated backgrounds.
  • Jellyfin backdrop support, with a fallback to a blank or animated background.
  • A new default background music track, composed by me. It's not exactly the best, but i hope y'all like it.

Playback improvmentes

  • H.264 Baseline, Main and High profile support, with a profile toggle inside settings.
  • New 480p streaming modes at 720 Kbps and 1.5 Mbps, designed for weaker internet connections.
  • New EXPERIMENTAL 1080p30 streaming modes at 4, 6 and 8 Mbps. Ethernet is recommended for these higher-bitrate modes, as Wi-Fi can experience significant buffering.
  • Live TV finally tested and working!

QOL Stuff

  • Optional logging, that can be enabled when diagnostic information is needed, maybe to report an issue
  • A new Who's Watching? screen.
  • A dedicated Help screen explaining the controls, complete with animated 3D controller models.
  • Total usage time tracking.
  • A new little easter egg to discover.

Get Ufin

Feedbacks, suggestions and bug reports are welcome! If you encounter playback issues, please mention whether you're using a real Wii U or Cemu, your selected playback settings, and whether you're connected over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Thanks to everyone who's checked out the project, tested it, or contributed along the way. I hope you enjoy this update!

^(i am also still awaiting to get the app approved on the hb app store. tho releases are already on github)

DISCLAIMER: Before getting started with the features, i want everyone reading this to know that this project is VERY HEAVILY AI ASSISTED, most of the code is Ai generated, the app was built using the free tiers of claude and chatgpt to write the bulk of the code, while i don't have much coding knowledge, i did my part in choosing the architecture of the app, the style, features, and most importantly real hardware testing and debugging, i spent a lot of time making sure the app was ready to publish, testing everything i could on my setup between a real wii u and cemu.
I am still learning programming and i look forward to being able to completely write complex applications on my own.
this app started mostly as a test of what free tools could do, and if the wii u would be a viable media machine, im still a pretty busy student and this was my way to make something that i couldnt find before. Docs and comments are also ai generated given my bad english i wanted to make them the most understandable i could, so people can contribute or make their own forks without having to go crazy over what the code does

IMPORTANT: I will never ask for donations, if you want to help the project you can do so by submitting issues and if you are an experienced developer, by contributing to the project on github and even by making your own fork

I hope everyone here will enjoy this very niche homebrew app for our favourite console <3

First time ever playing a resident evil game, played it with the VR mod, ITS AMAZING

it wasn't really that scary, tho the zombies not dying after 6 headshots was pretty annoying, the vr mod is amazing considering it converts a third person game into an insane first person experience, the enviornments in this game are also amazing for it

Ufin - Jellyfin client for Wii U

i am making a native Jellyfin client for the Wii U, since no one has yet, it's in a very early stage but it can:

  • Connect to a jf server
  • Browse libraries
  • Stream music
  • Report playback to jellyfin

Video playback and the proper UI aren't implemented yet, it's currently a text based UI.

DISCLAIMER: the project is heavily AI assisted, more info on that in the github README

if anyone thinks this is cool lmk, i mainly wanna see how many ppl care about this, any help by actually good wii u homebrew devs is also appreciated

I might have made the worst setup to play Kiriko ever

game running on the Nintendo switch, with insane ping, with a half broken keyboard and a 2006 laptop sending the audio from the switch headphone jack to my g435 lightspeed (I could only get 3600 DMG and 6800 heals -.-), at least it's just a temporary setup imma get back to my PC in a week

My childhood collection, is it good?

I got most of these when I went to gamestops hunting for them with my dad, we were always one game behind so we could get the figures cheap

No multi Page Memory card Will switch pages

Both my bitfunx psxmemcard and an old 240 In 1 won't let me change pages, they can save fine and load too, but only on the first page, for the bitfunx I tried all the button combos both in game and in the memory card menu, and I also tried my AliExpress wireless controller and an original dualshock. Idk what the issue could be

Watching stuff on jellyfin with a 2ds xl reminds me of when I used to watch Pokemon on the Nintendo anime channel

For those who don't know jellyfin is a self hosted media server(basically some sort of private Netflix If anyone is interested to try it here's the GitHub link, I hope the guy that made it keeps updating it https://github.com/serrattleballs/jellyfin-3ds
