Is Swimming in Mixed-Gender Pools Haram?

Swimming in mixed-gender pools is not permissible in Islam.
These environments almost always involve exposure of ‘awrah and make it difficult to lower the gaze—both of which are strictly commanded in Islam. What may seem normal socially can still be spiritually harmful.
Allah تعالى says:
“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity…”
(Surah An-Nur 24:30)
In such settings, maintaining modesty becomes nearly impossible, which leads to fitnah (temptation) and opens the door to sin. Islam blocks not only sin itself, but also the paths that lead to it.
References:
Fatawa Hindiyyah (Vol. 5, p. 328):
“Gathering together is impermissible due to exposure of ‘awrah and looking at it.”
Radd al-Muhtar (Ibn ‘Abidin) (Vol. 6, p. 371):
“Whatever leads to the unlawful is itself unlawful.”
A believer should choose environments that protect their haya (modesty) and keep them بعيد from doubtful matters.
If you have a specific Islamic question and would like guidance from a qualified Mufti, you can submit your question to AskMuftiOnline and explain your circumstances in detail.
And Allah knows best.

Is Shaking Hands With a Non-Mahram Allowed in Islam?

Assalamu alaykum.
Shaking hands with a non-mahram woman is not permissible in Islam, and it is considered a sin.
However, if it happened only as a formality and without any bad intention, it is generally not regarded as a major sin — but it should still be avoided.
If it happened, sincerely seek Allah’s forgiveness and make a firm intention to avoid it in the future.
Allah says in the Qur’an:
“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity…”
(Surah An-Nur 24:30)
The Prophet said:
“It is better for one of you to be pierced in the head with an iron needle than to touch a woman who is not permissible for him.”
(Reported by al-Tabarani)
What should you do if it happened?
Sincerely repent to Allah.
Ask Allah for forgiveness.
Make a firm intention not to repeat it.
Try to avoid such situations politely in the future.
If you’re unsure about a specific situation, you can also submit it to AskMuftiOnline and get an answer based on the circumstances rather than relying only on general information.

Is It a haram to Avoid Relatives for Mental Peace in Islam?

Assalamu Alaikum everyone,

Avoiding certain relatives for the sake of your mental peace is not necessarily haram, particularly when you are genuinely hurt, stressed, or facing harm.

Islam recognizes a person’s emotional and mental well-being and does not require someone to continually put themselves in harmful situations.

However, there is an important distinction between creating some distance and completely cutting off family ties (silat al-rahm) without a valid reason. Completely severing ties with relatives without a valid reason is not permissible and can be sinful.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“It is not permissible for a Muslim to forsake his brother for more than three days.”
Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim

The Prophet ﷺ also said:
“The Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand other Muslims are safe.”
Sahih al-Bukhari

So what can someone do?
• Maintain basic ties, such as giving Salam
• Keep a respectful distance when necessary
• Avoid arguments and harmful environments
• Try to restore the relationship gradually when possible

So, a person may distance themselves from relatives for their mental peace and protection from harm, but they should not completely cut off their relatives without a valid reason.

Islam teaches a balance between protecting yourself from harm and maintaining family ties.

If you have a personal Islamic question and want guidance specific to your situation, you can submit it to AskMuftiOnline and ask a qualified Mufti directly. You can explain your circumstances in detail and receive an answer based on Islamic sources rather than relying only on general advice from social media.

May Allah make things easy for anyone dealing with difficult family relationships and grant us wisdom in maintaining our ties. Ameen. 🤲

How Can I Become Consistent in My Prayers?

Assalamu Alaikum everyone,
Sometimes we genuinely want to pray consistently, but we struggle with laziness, distractions, feeling spiritually overwhelmed, or simply falling out of the habit.
If you’re struggling with Salah, don’t give up on it. Even if you’ve been inconsistent, keep returning to Allah and keep trying.
Allah says:
“As for those who strive in Our cause, We will surely guide them to Our ways.”
— Qur’an 29:69
A few things that may help:
Make a sincere effort to pray each Salah on time.
If you miss a prayer, don’t let that make you give up on the rest of the day. Get back to praying.
Ask Allah sincerely to help you become consistent.
Recite “La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah” frequently.
Make this dua:
“Rabbi a’inni ’ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni ’ibadatik.”
“My Lord, help me to remember You, thank You, and worship You in the best manner.”
Consistency doesn’t mean you will never struggle. It means that whenever you fall, you keep coming back to Allah.
If you’re struggling with a specific question about Salah, missed prayers, or any other Islamic matter, you can submit your question to AskMuftiOnline, where qualified Muftis review your question and provide authentic Islamic guidance.

Can Shaytan’s Whispers Take Away a Believer’s Iman?

Assalamu Alaikum everyone,
Can unwanted thoughts, doubts, or whispers from Shaytan take away a believer’s Iman?
Sometimes a person may experience disturbing thoughts about Allah, Islam, or matters of faith and become worried that simply having these thoughts makes them a kafir.
The answer is no. Involuntary thoughts and whispers that a person dislikes and does not willingly accept do not, by themselves, take a believer outside Islam.
The Prophet ﷺ taught us how to deal with such whispers: seek refuge in Allah and stop engaging with them.
References: Sahih al-Bukhari 3276; Sahih Muslim 127a.
May Allah protect us from the whispers of Shaytan and keep our hearts firm upon Iman. Ameen.
If you have a specific question about waswas, faith, or another Islamic matter, you can submit it to AskMuftiOnline, where qualified Muftis review questions and provide authentic Islamic guidance.
