My first attempt at GF sourdough

Why yes, it is rather brick-like! I’ve been baking regular sourdough for several months, and kind of got that process figured out. I decided I wanted to try making GF sourdough for my wife.

I’ve been working on a GF starter for a few weeks and got it to a point where I was ready to give it a go. I used only what I had on hand (Pillsbury AP flour, brown rice flour, and buckwheat flour). So, I was fully expecting a lackluster end result. Obviously, it’s ugly. But! The inside actually proved the starter was doing its thing.

For the next one, I’m going to use the bread flour recipe from Gluten Free on a Shoestring and expect a much more respectable loaf. I will share my results!

Eta: my wife said the flavor is quite good. She’s toasted a couple slices and said the little, dense planks are perfect portions 😂

Who approves payroll in your organization?

I moved from a fairly large, global company to a smaller, global company that needs help with compliance and process standardization.

At the old company, the final payroll was approved by the payroll lead for North America. No one outside of payroll was involved in the approval flow.

At the new company, payroll is first approved by HR leadership, then payroll leadership, then the VP of HR, then finance. For context, they had a major payroll error last year and threw together additional audits and approvals partly to satisfy auditors.

This is way too many approvals, in my opinion, and I’m curious how other companies operate.

Final pay debate

It’s well established that involuntary terminations must be paid immediately upon separation. No question there. But I was having a debate with an HR manager about the timing of this specific situation.

They will be terminating an employee on Friday, which is their regular pay day. We pay current, so the employee would receive their full regular salary by default. The debate started with how to pay their accrued vacation.

I said we can let the payroll run as normal, and the regular salary will be paid on Friday. Then, on Friday, we can hand the employee a check for their accrued vacation. The HR manager said this proposal is not allowed as it violates CA law.

They said we cannot pay final pay by direct deposit unless the employee authorized it in advance. They’re solution is to exclude them from the regular payroll and hand them a check on Friday that covers everything (salary + vacation).

I’ve never heard of this direct deposit rule. How does this apply to a pay day termination? To me, the direct deposit of regular salary is fine since the employee wouldn’t be separated at the time it posted. Am I wrong?

I ultimately told the HR manager we can do it their way, as I’m sure that would cover us legally. However, withholding the regular pay will just create unnecessary questions from the employee when they notice they’re not being paid.

Do any of my California payroll folks have any insight here?

Contreras on Duran gesturing to him: “I would never take that personal. I love the guy, and we need the guy here. We need his energy. And I don’t know. I haven’t talked to him yet, but it’s nothing personal.”

Willson Contreras when he was asked about Jarren Duran gesturing to him:
“I wasn’t sure. I mean, I love Jarren. He’s one of the guys that plays with emotion, plays 100%. We love him here. And he’s one of the guys that if I need to go to war, I’m gonna pick him because he’s gonna give his 100%. I saw him doing some stuff. I would never take that personal. I love the guy, and we need the guy here. We need his energy. And I don’t know. I haven’t talked to him yet, but it’s nothing personal.”

The Contreras/Cavalli brawl that started it all

Maybe I’m slow, but I just connected these dots. That fight was on June 30. They lost the next day (the last game in that series), had a day off, then ripped off 15 in a row.

Where would we be without WC40?

This song popped into my head today…

And now I’m trying to understand why I watched that movie a hundred times

Pedro was just unreal

I loved watching him pitch, and I took it for granted just how special he was.

8/24/2000: gives up season high 8 hits and 6 earned runs over 8 innings

8/29/2000: complete game 1 hit shutout

God I miss him.

I know it’s not much but…

A local music store was having a sidewalk sale. Lots of old junk, tons of broken drum hardware, random cables etc. They had a few guitars and I asked how much for this one, basically because it wasn’t missing anything, not because I need any more guitars. They said $30. I sighed, and told my wife I bought another guitar.
