Looking for shows where you can’t trust the protagonist or reality

Hi all,

I’m looking for TV series that revolve around questioning reality and psychological instability. I’m really interested in shows that start with a normal-looking surface but slowly pull you into a world where you can't trust the environment or the unreliable perspective of the lead.

I love the way games like Silent Hill 2 handle trauma through storytelling, and I’m looking for the television equivalent of that "something is deeply wrong here" feeling. I’m specifically avoiding surrealist or abstract shows; I want a narrative that is grounded and makes sense, even when it's being deceptive.

My criteria:

  • Grounded Starts: I like when everything appears to be normal at first, only for the reality of the situation to slowly unravel.
  • High-Concept Narratives: I love shows that explore philosophical or existential themes (like Black Mirror).
  • Atmosphere over Horror: It doesn’t have to be a horror show, but I want it to be atmospheric, tense, and unsettling.
  • The Big Reveal: I’m looking for a twist ending that ties back into the central mystery or psychological hook, forcing you to view the entire season in a new light.
  • Consistency: I want the story to follow its own internal logic, even if the protagonist is struggling with their own memory or perception.

Does anyone have any suggestions for hidden gems or popular hits that fit this specific vibe?

Thanks!

Looking for movies where you can’t trust the protagonist or reality

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for movie recommendations that lean heavily into psychological tension and questioning reality, especially those where everything appears to be normal at first. I love stories that start grounded but slowly reveal that the world is "off," or that the protagonist might be an unreliable narrator processing trauma or hidden memories.

I’m a fan of games like Silent Hill 2 and Martha is Dead, so I’m looking for that specific psychological heavy feeling. Note**:** I’m not looking for surrealist/Lynchian films. I prefer the dialogue and storytelling to make logical sense within the world of the movie, even if that reality is eventually pulled apart.

What I’m looking for:

  • The "Slow Creep": Stories that start out seemingly ordinary before the cracks in reality start to show.
  • Unreliable Narrators: Characters who are hiding things from the audience (or themselves).
  • Slow-Burn Atmosphere: I prefer psychological dread and tension over jump scares.
  • A Massive Twist Ending: Ideally, I want the twist to be directly related to the main hook, a revelation that recontextualizes the reality or the protagonist's actions in a logical but shocking way.
  • Deep Psychological Themes: Anything dealing with identity, fractured memories, or a crumbling sense of what’s real.

What are the absolute must-watch thrillers that leave you staring at the wall when the credits roll?

Looking for psychological games where you can't trust the environment or the protagonist

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for recommendations for games where the core hook is questioning reality especially those where everything appears to be normal at first. I’m fascinated by stories where the world around you is a manifestation of the protagonist's mental state, memories, or hidden trauma.

I’m a big fan of Silent Hill 2 (Remake) and Martha is Dead because they use dream logic and an unreliable narrator to keep you second-guessing everything. I’m looking for more titles that pull the rug out from under you, ideally with a major twist ending that recontextualizes the entire experience.

What I’m looking for:

  • Atmosphere & Tension: It doesn't have to be a traditional horror game with jump scares. I'm totally fine with psychological thrillers, surreal adventures, or mystery games as long as the vibe is heavy and unsettling.
  • Environmental Storytelling: I love when the world itself shifts, warps, or changes to reflect the narrative and the character's psyche.
  • Deep Themes: Stories that deal with identity, fractured memories, or existential dread where you can't even trust your own character's perspective.
  • The "Post-Game Silence": I want something that leaves me staring at the screen during the credits trying to process what actually happened.

Does anyone have any mind-bending suggestions or hidden gems that fit this vibe? I’m open to anything from AAA titles to indie games.

Thanks!

Looking for a game with that specific Sam Lake/Max Payne 2 "poetic misery" and hardboiled writing.

I’ve been chasing a specific feeling for nearly two decades. Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne has been my favorite game of all time since I played it as a kid, and nothing has ever quite matched its soul.

To me, it’s the peak of "Literary Noir." It wasn’t just the slow-motion gunplay; it was the way Sam Lake wrote Max’s internal world. I’m obsessed with the hauntingly poetic, deeply cynical, and heavily metaphor-driven internal monologue. I’m looking for that level of self-effacing narration, the kind of writing that hits you with lines like:

"There are no choices. Nothing but a straight line. The illusion comes afterwards, when you ask 'Why me?' and 'What if?' when you look back, see the branches, like a pruned bonsai tree, or a forked lightning. If you had done something differently, it wouldn't be you, it would be someone else looking back, asking a different set of questions."

I’m looking for games that capture that exact neo-noir, hardboiled energy. I want writing that feels "heavy," philosophical, and unashamedly dramatic.

What I’m looking for:

  • The Voice: I need a narrative style that strikes as hard as the great James McCaffrey. That gravelly, weary, and dead-serious delivery is essential. I want a protagonist who sounds like they’ve lived through ten lifetimes of regret.
  • The Tone: Deeply cynical, tragic, and atmospheric.
  • The Aesthetic: Gritty neo-noir. I generally prefer high-concept 3D titles with strong production value.

What I’ve already played/know:

  • Other Remedy games: Tried other Sam Lake (Alan Wake 1, Control). Haven't tried AW2 though.
  • Disco Elysium: The writing was incredible; I loved how the psyche narrates the protagonist's failures.
  • Max Payne 3: The gameplay was top-tier, but it lacked that specific "New York Winter" poetic soul from the first two.

I’m looking for that "lightning in a bottle" feeling I got playing MP2 as a kid, something that treats its pulp fiction roots like high art. Any suggestions for games that feel like a cynical, cigarette-stained paperback nightmare?

TL;DR: Seeking games with the specific "poetic noir" writing style of Max Payne 2. High-concept, cynical, and heavy on metaphors.

[Fo4] Level 59 Plateau: Any mods to add actual depth/consequence to the late game?

I’ve officially hit the point in Fallout 4 where leveling up feels meaningless. I’m level 59, I’ve got my "god-tier" weapons, and my perks are so maxed out that I don't even know where to put my points anymore. Combat has turned into a boring loop of shooting bullet sponges that can’t actually hurt me.

I’m looking for mod suggestions that do more than just add "more damage." Specifically:

  • Skill/Perk Overhauls: Something that makes SPECIAL stats or perk choices matter again at high levels.
  • Weapon Progression: Are there mods that introduce a new tier of gear or make existing weapons feel unique again?
  • Combat Mechanics: Anything to remove the "bullet sponge" feel and make the game tactical/dangerous again.

I'm not necessarily looking for a total overhaul like Horizon (unless I can mid-save it), but I need a reason to keep playing this character. What are your "must-haves" for the endgame?
