Single-six on my mind!

I absolutely love my inherited Ruger Old Model Single-six—my grandpa’s old gun, which he taught me to shoot with when I was just a kid. It’s still a tack-driving machine; this target, from my last range trip, got absolutely chewed up out at ten yards.

“Soon the sky is above the river got wider and wider as the river wound out of the trees and cut through the plains.”

Out in the back garden with two old Rangers and a good cigar this evening. Hard to beat.

Finished Blood Meridian yesterday. Holy cow.

Maybe especially this whole scene, though it’s damn hard to choose just one. Judge Holden seems like a great metaphor for the imperialist United States, subsuming and destroying endlessly (especially with his “War is god” ethos).

And the epic sweep of the novel just floored me. Seeing the brutality of David Brown and Glanton and the Yumas and the Judge was so sobering. The most powerful book I’ve read in a long time.

Caves of Altamira

What a banger. I heard it in the radio in my local coffee shop this morning—in so many years listening to the Dan, this is the first time I’ve caught this one in the wild. Anyone else hear it while out and about?

Fun little no-name “Swiss Army”

Not sure who made this one, as it was a gift from a friend—but it stays sharp, has all the tools I need, and I made it a fun plastic lanyard with a pretty bead. Gets the job done!

One of my favorite knockabout knives!

Enjoying the heck out of this Small Stockman. Got some whittling in earlier, a good time. Rough Ryder does some great knives for the price. Holds up to just about everything, so far.

I did my PhD on the work of William Stafford while he was a conscientious objector—long before he became Poet Laureate of the United States. This remains a go-to for so many beyond just me.

My grandpa was an English professor—like my parents are, and like I am—and he was an avid Hemingway reader. This one is almost as good as *A Farewell to Arms*, I’d say.

I love my little Farmer’s Toothpick. I use it all the time, for whittling and box-opening and odd jobs around the yard, and as a backup to my bigger pocketknives. Anyone else carry one of these?
