My complete collection of symphony recordings so far

My previous taste in classical music was in virtuoso violin/piano concertos with killer hook and solo passages, but in the past year or so I've started enjoying more nuanced symphonies, and have added significantly to my collection.

So far I've completed collection of (by complete, I mean all the symphonies by a conductor but not necessarily complete cycles by one conductor, although I have a few of those):

Beethoven 1-9

Brahms 1-4

Bruckner 1-9

Mahler 1-10

Mendelssohn 1-5

Rachmaninov 1-3

Saint-Saens 1-5

Schumann 1-4

Sibelius 1-7

Tchaikovsky 1-6 + Manfred

So which are your favourites, and which would you recommend I add?

My taste is mainly romantic era.

I have incomplete collection of symphonies by Shotakovich, Schubert, Elgar, Dvorak and a few others.

Parents telling you to finish everything on your plate as 'there are starving children in Africa'.

Did your parents say that to you?

If you are a parent yourself, do you sometimes find yourself saying it to your own children?

Edit: wow this really blew up! 200 replies from Redditors sharing their story. Thank you.

Today's op shop haul

AU$2 each.

Two new composers I hadn't heard of before (Ferde Grofe and Carl Nielsen).

I own around 400 CDs but only 1 by Mozart (piano concertos 20-24 by Askenazy and Philharmonia Orchestra) but glad to add this monumental work.

Big fan of Rachmaninov and only learnt about Vespers recently so had to get it.

Wasn't going to buy the Tchaikovsky piano conceto 1 as I already have 5 or so recordings but saw it was signed by Simon Tedeschi so decided to add to the collection.

Not really into opera but a "best hits" CD was hard to pass up.

What are you listening to first?

Can be mortgage free if I sell an IP but..

Hi all.

We are early 40s professional couple with 1 child. PPOR worth 2.2M in Sydney, owing 500K.

An IP worth 1.5M (our previous PPOR), 900K owing.

If we sell the IP we can be mortgage free. We have no plans to upsize/upgrade PPOR (we live in a 4 bedroom house for 3 people + a dog).

The catch is, the IP was bought at the post Covid peak in 2021 and we will probably lose 100K if we sell at today's prices.

The tenant moved out and we need to decide to rent it out again for 2-3 years, or sell at a loss, take a 100K capital loss tax credit (offsets any capital gains made in the future), be mortgage free.

So hold on or sell? What would you do?

Do you like the Cello Suites by Bach? Which version is your favourite?

Personally I love the 1992 Anner Bylsma recording with the Stradivarius "Servais" (1701). There is some fascinating history behind the instrument also.

I listened this recording growing up as my parents often played it. Then in the mid 1990s my mother gifted it to a friend who was moving overseas, thinking she's simply buy another set. For the next 10 or 15 years she tried to find this recording, to no avail!

I managed to find one for her online selling at a premium, and eventually bought myself a set too.

Which symphonies are worth collecting in their full set?

Currently I have full sets of Mahler, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Rachmaninov, Brucker and Brahms symphonies.

I'm new to Bruckner and listening to it now (bought the full set yesterday).

Which symphonies are worth collecting in their full set?

Are you audiophiles? What audio systems do you own?

I mainly listen to symphonies, piano/violin concertos. Favourite composers are Rachmaninov, Mahler, Beethoven, Chopin, Tchaikovksy, Prokofiev to name a few.

I mainly listen to music on CD, because streaming just isn't the same, even if there are near infinite recordings available. If I discover new music online, then I usually end up buying a CD for it. I have a modest but growing collection as pictured.

My audio systems are budget systems. My main system is a budget Panasonic SC-PMX92, but I have an even cheaper $150 system in the kitchen (for when I'm cooking/ washing up). My car audio is probably the best for sound quality of the three audio systems I have (built-in system on an Audi).

Which makes me wonder, are there any audiophiles here with systems that are worth the price of a car? What are your audio systems like? Maybe share and have a discussion.

Tried to do the Leura Cascades walk today..

Hi all.

We're visiting for the school holidays, and I've been to the Blue Mountains area maybe 10 times in the past 25 years. Most of that time was spent around Katoomba, so this time we decided to explore Leura Cascades.

We parked at Leura Cascades car park and paid for parking, but we were unable to find where the trail starts, and ended up wandering up and down the winding paved road (closed to cars by the locked iron gates at the car park) for half an hour, asking other groups where the trail starts, but nobody knew and it seemed everybody was as lost as we were.

We then found a sign saying some parts of the walking track were closed from April to September this year. There were 'detour' signs showing one way goes to Katoomba and another to Leura, but it wasn't clear if these were trail walks, as they led us down to more paved road.

So we gave and left.

Tomorrow is our last full day here, so we'd hate to leave without doing a proper walk. Reading the NSW National Parks website makes me even more confused about where I should go.

So asking the locals - where should I go to do a 2-3 hour walk to see the best of Leura Cascades?

Thanks in advance

Rate my hermit crab food

Hi all.

I've had these two for a month. I almost never see them eating, and just once I caught one with an apple piece (photo attached).

There's never an appreciable amount of reduction in the food in their bowl. I assume they must be eating because I figure they wouldn't survive a month without food.

I give them a mix of 5 things:

- diced apple

- diced carrot

- crushed unsalted roasted cashew

- shredded coconut

- torn spinach leaf

Is this a decent long term healthy diet? What else can I give them?

Thanks in advance.
